Uhh I think Warren Barguil's 18th in Turkey GC is as good as it got this week. Luckily for me Pinot lost a few GC places in Romandie, fair few guys in the top 10 have him.

Well, last year I had 2-3-4-5-6 overall in Romandie, that was kind of a launchpad for my good year. This year, I'm happy with Kelderman and Pinot picking up some points, encouraged by Trentin and Guardini picking up some 2nd places in Turkey, and mopping up minor points with Barguil and Battaglin. Different goalposts this year, for sure.

Still, the first grand tour of the year hasn't even started yet, so there are plenty of points to come. I don't have a ton of great talent in the 'smaller' races this week (Dunkerque and Frankfurt) but I have some guys in the Giro next week:

Appollonio
Aru
Battaglin
Bobridge
Kelderman
Dekker
(provisionally) Cattaneo and Pozzato
Matthews
Breschel

So Romandie wasn't great for me, think I only had Pinot and Anton in the points.
A few more points coming out of Turkey with Cam Meyer at 6th and Sutherland at 10th and Barguil for a few more. Plus Kittel taking the double at the end. Not sure how that compares but hopefully enough to move me a couple of positions. Ideally upwards

Seeing as you're all dying to hear my Giro squad... Aru, Battaglin, Colbrelli, Bobridge, Evans, Cattaneo, Niemiec, Cobo, Madrazo, Preidler, Rujano, Bole... give or take. Got quantity anyhow. Quality? Hm, I'll need a lot of luck in the breaks to score.

Next year I have to get the classics covered better, I'm out the game at this point already.

Totally forgot about last week's update, sorry about that. I will post the new update tonight, but please have patience the next month or so as I'm very busy finishing my master's thesis.

In the circumstances I think you may be entitled to prioritise one thing over the other.

Will be good to see the pre-Giro standings, i think we'll be able to say which teams won't be winning. After that there isn't a massive need for the next update until after the Giro has finished.

The Giro is turning out to be a disaster even before it starts.

First Ulissi and Monsalve are out of their respective teams start lists after being near certainties to start and now Rujano will not be starting too.

Have to pin all my GC hopes on the enigmatic Cobo.

Meersman could be the only saving grace if he can pull of a couple of stage victories.

Rujano focussing on the Vuelta could be exactly what those who picked him needed. Better than a DNF in the Giro and f*cking off back to South America for the rest of the year.

This got me thinking about how far back you can be at the end of the Giro and still win the game. Judging by the first two editions, not very. Here are the top10 in the ranking just after the Giro and the rank at the end of the year :

2011
1 LukeSchmid 8
2 ingsve 1
3 Bumeington 15
4 theyoungest 16
5 Bicing 42
6 The Hitch 6
7 Handbrake 4
8 AAC1983 18
9 Parrulo 59
10 nvpacchi 13

2012
1 TeoSheva 5
2 Nyssinator 3
3 skidmark 1
4 EvansIsTheBest 7
5 Armchair cyclist 6
6 Kvinto 2
7 Mellow Velo 22
8 The Hitch 13
9 lancaster 38
10 Kazistuta 20

Both winners were already on the podium by the end of the Giro. In fact, the top6 after the Giro in 2012 finished in the top7 at the end of the year

Well that's good news
So what you are telling me is that as long as Goss and Kittel share all the sprint stages between them and the GC podium is Pichon, Sutherland and Weening then I'm still in with a shot.

1 name rings out in both editions and presumably in this year's too (since I was 3rd last update). If this game finished in April every year I'd be so good at it.

Rujano was focusing on the vuelta anyway. At least here there was a chance for 18 finishing the race points. With rujanito you take them where you can.

Monsalve was a good young rider a few years ago. But youth doesn't las long in cycling and he's done nothing since. Even ryo doesn't think he's all that.

Update #15: A Pre-Giro Update

Alright, since it's been a little longer than usual since I've posted an update, I thought it would be a good idea to do so before the Giro. I apologize for the missing update, but as I've mentioned, I'm very busy finishing my master's thesis which is due June 3rd. That also means that I won't post any updates before the Giro is done but I actually think that's OK as there aren't that many additional races. However, if someone wants to post updates instead, please do so and feel free to PM me with any questions.

Anyway, back to this week's top scorers (which is actually the last two weeks combined). With points from Betancur, Gilbert, Anton and Berhane, al_pacino tops the list with 1010 points, but is closely followed by bubbles who scores 952 points mainly thanks to Berhane, Gilbert and the big scorer, Daniel Martin.

This week's top scorers:

1. al_pacino - 1010
2. bubbles - 952
3. Vitapen - 921
4. element - 868
5. The Amateur - 852

bubbles also has to settle for 2nd place on this week's high jumpers list as EvansIsTheBest takes a narrow win, jumping 35 places while bubbles moves up 34 places. The week's top scorer, al_pacino, also makes some noise as he jumps 28 places.

This week's high jumpers:

1. EvansIsTheBest +35
2. bubbles +34
3. The Amateur +29
4. al_pacino +28
5. FlorinM +27

That doesn't change anything regarding the top spot in the competition which is still occupied by will10 who leads comfortably. The rest of the top 10 has undergone a complete makeover, however. HelgeBlendet and *Falze* jumps from 9th and 10th into 2nd and 3rd. Meanwhile The Hitch drops from 2nd to 6th while Dim drops out of the top 10 altogether. Our former leader, Skibby the bush kangaroo, sneaks his way back into the top 10.

Top 10:

1. (-) will10 - 5256
2. (+7) HelgeBlendet - 4794
3. (+7) *Falze* - 4768
4. (+2) Geraint Too Fast - 4740
5. (+3) ironted - 4729
6. (-4) The Hitch - 4700
7. (-3) greenedge - 4681
8. (-3) SteelyDan - 4659
9. (+8) adamski101 - 4634
10. (+3) Skibby the bush kangaroo - 4624

Thanks for the update Hugo and good luck with your thesis!
Still stoked sitting in second place, but I don't think I'll be able to defend it during the Giro.

Giro
Appollonio
Aru
Kruijswijk
Oss
Cattaneo
Breschel
Bole

-> 105 points minimum, but they all might be able to score some points every now and then

Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid
Ospina Hernandez

He is still alive!

I didn't even notice he already did two races. Nice to see him finally race even though he has yet to set the world alight :)

Another thank you here Hugo!

My first moment on a top step and 16th must be well in advance of any position I've had before.

My Giro line up isn't *** strong as i'd like with a lot of hopes being put upon Betancur.
