That team of 33 comes in within budget at 7443.

Would it be possible to include "Collective Wisdom" as a team in the tables, as was done last year: a useful point of comparison.

If that team wins, then we can all share the honour.

Wow, that's an amazing coincidence! For sure we should figure out a way of tracking that, no prob.

18 riders is my best in terms of communality, with 6 teams. And 0 riders in common with the... leader of the game: wizard_of_oz.

My most unique picks (<10) are:

KEUKELEIRE Jens (9 picks - 179p) : Not bad 2013 that didn´t pay out in terms of CQ points. Two victories in Vuelta a Burgos, and a 7th at Dwars Door Vlaanderen before a crash that ended his season in August, sound promising for me. Hope a win and some good pacings in 2014 classics, with some placings at stage races. Has a ceiling of 479 points from his first pro year (2010), and I hope he'll better that.

FENN Andrew (7 picks - 119p) : After a good 2012, the races level rised in 2013, getting in his first GT and some WT calendar. Points suffered a bit, but I think the team will keep his 2013 race calendar, where he can do much better. I predict he'll end in 300-400 point range.

BELLETTI Manuel (6 picks - 167p) : General terms, I believe Van Hummel will lead Androni out of Italy, and Belletti will lead it in the rich italian calendar. He´s ceiling is not too high (397p, in CSF) but it was done in the italian calendar and i think he'll equal that. I have Hoogerland in too, and for both of them I applied to myself the "You can't go wrong with Androni's leader" argument.

PATERSKI Maciej (3 picks - 128p) : A career working for others at Liquigas/Cannondale, he'll co-lead CCC Polsat with Rebellin this year. Already proved some talent, he's a decent climber that can top 5 in a lot of 1.1 and HC italian races, and win some east Europe stage races. Also, can be CCC leader for Polish NC and Tour of Poland. After an 2013 where he very seldom raced out of WT (did Catalunya, Pais Vasco, Amstel, Fléche, Dauphiné, ToPoland, Benelux, Vuelta), me thinks he can rock in a less competitive calendar, and be a major player in the game. I think he can do 400-600p.

KREDER Michel (2 picks - 144p) : Hyped in 2012 by JV as a future Amstel winner, Kreder went off the radar in this game. Got his 2013 win in a stage at 4 Jours de Dunkerque, and had always some good results out of WT. In 2014 choose to step down from WT, and as a free role / co-leader at Wanty, racing the very rich french/benelux calendar, I think he get some great placings and some wins in HC/1.1 classics. 300-500p, hopefully.

Weekly Update #1: Aaaand we're off... to see the wizard of oz in first place!

Well, all the long lists, short lists, innuendo and veiled references to riders we might pick are now a distant memory, and the season has begun. The weekly and overall rankings are, of course, the same this week, and with the major races being the Australian TT and RR championships (as well as those of New Zealand and a couple of stages of the 2.2 Vuelta a Tachira), naturally the leaderboard is peppered with teams that have a good number of Australians. Here is the top 10, with points totals next to them:

1 wizard_of_oz 482
2 greenedge 195
3 just some guy 189
4 WonderLance 155
5 riaroadtrip 150
5 Side_Shadow 150
7 ItalianGigolo 140
8 Tigerion 139
9 hilltopfinisher 135
10 mutschi 130

The mammoth points lead of wizard_of_oz is due to the fact that he/she has put forth an entirely Australian team, as the name might suggest. Points from Gerrans, Evans, Porte, Hepburn, Cam and Travis Meyer, Bobridge, Durbridge, Howson, O'Brien, Will and Simon Clarke, Dempster and Tanner mean that the wiz has 14 of the 50 riders that have scored ANY CQ points at all. So it's not a surprise that the team is in the lead.

Sadly, like his namesake, time might pull the curtain back to reveal the wizard's success as being massively amplified by the early season skew towards Australian riders accumulating CQ points. Recalling from memory, poster microdose had a massive lead from an all-Aussie team the first year of this game, but ended up somewhere around the bottom. Time will tell how well this antipodean fetish pays off. It's safe to say that if you want a shot at at least passing fame in the CQ game, you can probably achieve that by picking a bunch of Aussies.

Going further down the leader board, we find the in-no-way-does-my-name-suggest-Australian-leanings greenedge in second place with Gerrans, Howson, Hepburn and Von Hoff giving 195 points. Just Some Guy rounds out in third with Gerrans, Evans and both Clarkes. Honorable mention goes to game debutante WonderLance in fourth place with a team rife with riders who are, to paraphrase his description from his PM entering his team, 'anglo riders with names that are easier to pronounce'.

This week's top scorers and high movers obviously mimic the overall top 10, although you'll see on the spreadsheet that everyone but the wiz has moved down places, as we were all tied for first with zero points to start this thing. The 2.1 Tropicale Amissa Bongo is underway this week, as well as the continuing 2.2 Vuelta a Tachira, so teams with international riders should be able to play some catch-up.

Thanks for the update!

No problem, it was my first one and it was pretty fun to do!

Next few weeks should be interesting, usually I'd say a team of all Aussies would have a great shot at staying on top until February, but people seem to have lots of riders in San Luis and of course two relatively popular picks are doing well in the Gabon race... although only one of the top 10 has both Sanchez and Gerdemann and even if they 1-2 it would probably not be enough to take top spot, with a lot of picked riders in San Luis and an international field at TdU, the next few weeks will be pretty good.

Thanks for the update.

I'm guessing that you sent Ben1376 a PM regarding Casulleras.

Also will you be including the general wisdom team on future spreadsheets? Would be fun to track.

Hurray Lulu already at 10% :p

he might be at 50% when this race is over.

i think the ranking system is a bit flawed when you can get so many points from such a small race, but im not complaining. :p

Hey,

yeah I sent Ben a PM; Jordi Simon was 33 points but showed up as zero because there was a space after the name. MC, with his unerring eye for detail, noticed it a few days ago and alerted me. Since it's too late for changes, I decided to take Simon off the team but leave him on the spreadsheet with an asterisk so that Ben could delete it and see where his team would be at with Simon. But yes, his score won't count in the game.

And yes, general wisdom team to be counted on future spreadsheets; I just forgot in my excitement to do the first update.
