As I announced before the game, I dont have:

Ewan < took Wisniowski who is apparently the biggest talent out of Etixx dev team
Goss < Took Hoogerland as I totaly dislike Goss
Bettancur < Took Styby instead
Stannard < Thought Visconti and Jungels are better at same similar cost

Lol I hadn't even considered Porte at all. It's like I forgot he even existed. Somehow in my head Sky and Porte and all that ridiculous stuff already belongs to the past. But yeah, it's not very obvious from that, he went down more than a 1000 points from 2013 to 2014. Guess I should've picked him.

Please Seb Henao. Kill your captain in the Giro. You know your 3rd week is better!

I was always going with Visconti, was thinking about Scarponi but he's getting on now and Astana have so many good riders. Stannard its hard to say - Spring might come too early for him where he gets all his points.

Well, he is the top 4 most popular team this year again so that should be a good sign. I think Hitch got all of those too?

Here is my thought on a few riders I didn't end up picking.

Betancur: Eventhough he says he's more fit this year he admits that he does have a couple pounds too many still. But more importantly he still misses Colombia and his family and since his first child is expected in february I'm afraid that he will take too much time off to be with them rather than doing races all year. He'll be at the Giro and Vuelta but I'm guessing there are races inbetween that he'll probably pass over for a chance to go to colombia. But who knows...

Fredrik Ludvigsson: A young talent that got singed by Giant - Alpecin eventhough he's still recovering from surgery. This will most likely affect his early season so eventhough he is cheap I'm predicting that it will take a year for him to get acclimated in the pro ranks after his recovery so I'll wait until next year to perhaps pick him.

J-Rod: I had totally forgotten about J-Rod when I made my team and he might have made it in but looking at it now I'm more and more uncertain. He is getting really old so to think that he could bounce back fully to his past level is perhaps wishing too much.

Considered Porte, but I didn't feel like kicking one of my higher priced guys (or multiple lower priced) out of my team, so I decided to leave him out. Didn't realize he was such an 'obvious' choice though, so I might've done better still going with him, just to limit risk. But still, I'm not nearly as sure as some of you he will ride a good season next year.

Wow, I sleep for a night and wake up and the popularity tabs are done! Thanks guys.

I did wake up to a few messages that necessitated a few changes - a couple of folks pointed out that their own teams had duplicate riders that both of us failed to notice, and I found one team that had disappeared into the ether (had record of the PM forwarded to my email but I must have accidentally erased it before processing). Anyway, I've edited the popularity tab to reflect this, so this file should be the official file for the start of the season, now with 153 teams. The only changes that might happen is if I or someone else discover other duplicate riders or maybe a rider that was on my provisionally suspended list that I didn't notice before. Otherwise, game on!

Lots of people want unique picks but for me its the opposite, I want similar.

I think I'm 2nd, according to the file earlier, though some people's scores are not on there, so maybe 4th.

Here is what I see, with sidepoints added for names that have had good scores in the past.

Of course none of those sidepoints has anything to do with this year. We could be the 4 worst players this year who knows.
But generally I think we usually have popular teams (mc mountain also one year had the most popular team and he is 3rd all time).
So there is a good correlation between doing well and having popular teams.

However, to win generally you need a few less popular riders too because you need them to be hits that only work for you and thus seperate you from the pack. I don't have the computer processor right now to download past cq files and see where Pentacycle, Steely Dan, skidmark and ingsve were in popularity files before their winning seasons, but I would guess it wasn't right at the top.

As for me, I only have 1 unpopular rider which is Mancebo, who I only took because I was convinced by one of the other people that has him (search) that skydrive would get into good races this year, and I remember search 2 years ago saying Rebellin was a good pick and I ignored him because he was too old (Rebellin, not search), so my instincts told me to go with the old guy this time.

I don't know if I have ever had a unique pick and certainly not one since 2011. May the streak continue.

edit: okay, bonus nugget (although it may have been mentioned above, I skimmed a few comments) - after all the hubbub over doping cases in the past year, 3 people picked Ulissi and nobody picked Kreuziger. It's nice to have an edition that doesn't have a prominent undercurrent of potential dopers etc.

Yes, but 1) there's only room for a limited amount of expensive picks and the competition is good this year 2) will he lead as many smaller races? Maybe he'll focus more on the big wins and less on the smaller, I certainly don't think he will have a haul like '13.

My method is pretty easy, as long as it's 2 riders that are picked by not too many people (40 or fewer). Go to popularity tab, sort by rider name, copy all the people who have your first rider, paste to a column of another spreadsheet (or even in a spare column on that one); then go to the second rider, copy all the people who have him, paste that list in a column next to the first list, and edit out any names not in both. There's some potential human error but it's pretty easy.

Interesting to see that only 15 people picked Grande Ivan.

I thought he was gonna be one of the more popular picks since he is so cheap and with the potential for a new youth at Tinkoff and superdom for Contador.
