And it looks like the first bad news of the season goes to l29213 with their unique pick Ben King breaking his leg in training
That is the third piece of bad news this season: the first was that Alex Peters is one person, not two (L29213 had named him twice), the second is Mick Rogers out indefinitely with an unspecified heart condition (a unique pick for, guess who, L29213)

I'm glad I only have 2 riders in common with l29213 :)

This made me think of the user Nyssinator, who in the 2012 game had the rather expensive picks Jack Bobridge & Peter Kennaugh score 0 points because of track focus, and Yoann Offredo busted for doping early in the season. That meant a return of 7 points for a cost of 963. Nyssinator still finished 3rd with the 3rd highest score of all time in the CQ game :)
This game has historians?!!? How long before it becomes a specialist round on Mastermind?

Who's going to do the wikipedia page?

Some game stats, from an organizational standpoint:

144 teams (93% of last year's high of 155)
98 from cyclingnews forums
46 from velorooms forums (including a couple picked up by just_some_guy through twitter)
106 returnees
38 newbies (although this includes teams that may have played before but not last year; I'd say there are likely about 10 of these teams)

15 teams received before christmas
15 received between the 26th-29th
15 received 30th-31st
22 received on the 1st-2nd
30 received on the 3rd
48 received on the 4th (last 24 hours of entries)

So, it seems like people like to come back to this game, and they like to submit their team when all info is available. Can't state enough how helpful it was to have the 24 hour period to check teams over; it definitely helped have most of the popularity stuff in order too.

Haha :D
I came across it while doing the average placement list earlier in this thread. A lot of weird stuff has a tendency to stick in my memory. And being a former history student, I'm convinced that everything is better with a bit of historical context ;)

@TheGreenMonkey: skidmark posted the spreadsheet with all the teams a couple of pages back.

My team.
I have the 10 most popular picks.
My rare picks are Majka, Benoot and Soren K. Andersen (4), Guerreiro and Arcas (3), Hofstetter and Lastra (2) and Cristian Cañada (1),

Cañada can be one of the most profitable cyclists in terms of percentage in the game. Cost 0 :D
Majka and Benoot must be my differential factor. If booth makes a great season, I will be in top positions.
I expect so a shocking season of Soren K. and Moscon.
And of course, I have Mera Kudus in my team :p

I remember scoring good points with Degenkolb that season.
Sad to have missed this years game, but i completely mixed up the dates. Have made my own team to compare with you guys this season.

I'm probably one of the few that actually loves Gerro as a cyclist and also have him in my team so if he wins I have double reason to be happy! It's either him or Ewan in my opinion for tonight Aussie Nats!

60 points from Meyer's. That was my hope...hopefully he'll continue to do good in the TdU with his new found freedom.

Pretty good weekend for me anyway 130 points from Meyer, Haas and Gerrans
Like Jspear I think Meyer will be a good pick as he should be given some chances to work for himself. Figured he would pick up a few at the nats and has the potential to do really well at TDU. Hell he has won it before, But even a top 5 result will see him recover half his cost.

In case you were wondering - only one team had Bobridge, the Aussie Nats winner. This team was the newcomer barmaher, who at a glance didn't have any other scorers.

Six teams had Meyer's 60 second place points: comodoro, Jancouver, JosephD, Jspear, LukasCPH, and Tigerion. Jancouver also had Rohan Dennis for the TT points, and Tigerion mentioned above that their team has Haas as well (it seems comodoro does as well). Six teams had Jay McCarthy (none of whom had Meyer), and 19 teams had Nathan Haas. So down to Gerrans' 30 points, there are no severely popular picks in the top six. Nobody had Christie, the NZ champ, and only 3 teams got Dion Smith's 18 points for 2nd place.

So, at a very quick and casual glance, Tigerion, comodoro and Jancouver particularly look to be in good spots for this week's update, but we shall see tomorrow.

At one point, when Rohan Dennis and Cam Meyer were ahead of the remains of the peloton and chasing Bobridge I was hoping they will catch him and go 1-2.

At the end, Dennis DNF and Cam was 2nd. Which was also very satisfying as it would be a shame if Bobridge got caught. What an epic win for him! Congrats to Barmaher for the pick!

I got Cam + Gerrans si I can't complain and hopefully I get even more points from them from the TDU.

San Luis
Talansky
Gaviria
Ratto

Hoping for some points in the sprints here. Talansky's got his work cut out though. Really strong field and can't imagine the course suiting him

Down Under
Van Keirsbluck
De Marchi
Gautier
Clarke

VK and De Marchi probably just part of the trains. Clarke and Gautier could get nothing or a stage win, but you can be sure they'll try at some point :)

Update #1 - southern hemisphere action warms up CQ game, comodoro in early lead

Annnnnd we're off!

My, it only seems like yesterday we were winding down the season with Cykeltyven's decisive Lombardia showing sealing the overall win, and even more recently seeing Mareczko's outing in China give several teams an end-of-season bump. And the team reveals and subsequent start-of-season excitement at endless possibilities were actually almost yesterday. But the submission deadline exists for a reason, and that's because the racing is kicking off, and with it, the CQ points! The start of season leaderboard is often a lesson in who picked the most, and most successful, Aussies. With the Aussie TT and Road Nats kicking things off (and the overlooked-but-still-giving-a-few-points NZ Nats as well), we've got a few teams that managed to separate themselves from the pack for some early season glory. Since the first week is also as of now the only week, the top scorers overall are also the top scorers for the week, so I'll only update the first category.

Top 10 Overall

Rank Team Points this week
1 comodoro 148
2 Jancouver 140
3 Tigerion 130
4 barmaher 105
4 Roar Like A Mouse 105
6 JosephD 90
6 Jspear 90
6 LukasCPH 90
9 cj2002 80
10 Leadbelly 72

Comodoro had Meyer (2nd Aus Road Nats), Haas (4th in the same race), Gerrans (6th), and Dion Smith's 18 points for 2nd place in NZ putting their team over the top. Jancouver (Dennis, Meyer, Gerrans) and Tigerion (Meyer, Haas, Gerrans) round out the initial podium. 4th place finishing team barmaher has all of its 105 points from Bobridge so far. With a quick glance at the table suggesting that maybe no one has riders in Venezuela, it's a good bet that this leaderboard will stay the same next week.

Green Jersey Competition

Let me explain the rules to this - the competition was started last year as a supplement to the main game. The idea was that people would get points for placing highly each week, which would be the equivalent to placing highly each stage in a GT. Points were based off of the TdF flat stage allotment, which is as follows (1st-15th place): 45-35-30-26-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2, and the highest point-getter at the end of the year would win the competition. In case of a tie, points would be split, so a two-way tie for first would give each team 40 points (ie. the average of 1st and 2nd place points). Or more tangibly, the 13-way tie for 11th place this week gave each team the average of remaining points ((10+8+6+4+2)/13 = 2.46 ~ 2.5).

Anyway, I'm bringing it back this year, with plans for a similar KoM competition (stay tuned for that), although I might give them their own updates to keep this post from being too bloated. The intent is to give teams something to play for/brag about, even if they are effectively out of the running in the main game. Of course, right now, that list is redundant, but expect some separation as the season goes on.

Green Jersey Standings

Rank Team points
1 comodoro 45
2 Jancouver 35
3 Tigerion 30
4 barmaher 24
4 Roar Like A Mouse 24
6 JosephD 18
6 Jspear 18
6 LukasCPH 18
9 cj2002 14
10 Leadbelly 12

That's it for our initial week! We are now at the stage where we can still brag about our teams, post starting lists for the races coming up, and anticipate the different levels of ramping up the game as the season kicks off (TdU, then the European season kicking off at the end of the month, then the WT 'really' starting with Paris-Nice at the start of March, etc).

Thanks for the update!

Well, I wouldn't mind if my team would finish this high at the end of the game but we all know that this is just a slow start. As somebody who was in one of the previous editions in the Top10 after the spring classics, just to finish outside of the Top50, I know that this will be a long season and anything may (and will) happen.

It's good to score some early points never-the-less :D

Congrats to comodoro, a nice pick with Smith to take the win.
Always nice to get a good result and the early Green Jersey points are nice
