Tony Martin and Ryan Mullen both succeeded last seasons points tally in the ITT, which makes a change.

I note one single pick rider has done very well though the team he is on is languishing near the bottom of the table with over 750 point profit on a sub 400 point rider.

Yeah, GROENEWEGEN was a great pick, which makes me curious if anybody has one of those best possible teams so far?

Let's hope Skibby shows up with that at some point. They haven't been active since last year though, so if someone has some programming skills, here's a post they wrote about it. I enjoy doing some CQ statistics myself, but this is way beyond my capabilities.

Skibby the bush kangaroo said:
Here are the R commands I used. For it to work you need the lpSolve package to be installed. I used the csv files from cqranking from 31/12/2010 and 12/9/2011, they need to be in the working directory and called cq2010.csv and cq2011.csv. It had a problem finding Koning in 2010 and Rebellin was initially in the optimal list until I corrected his 2010 points to match the game guidelines:

library(lpSolve)
cq2010<-read.csv("cq2010.csv",header=TRUE) #end of 2010 csv from cqranking
cq2011<-read.csv("cq2011.csv",header=TRUE) #12 sep 2011 csv from cqranking
g<-match(cq2011$Name[1],cq2010$Name) #Match the top 1000 of 2011 with 2010
cq11 <- cq2011$CQ[1]
cq10 <- cq2010$CQ[g]
cq10[is.na(cq10)]<-0 #Assume zero points for 2010 if not found in list.
cq10[171]<-154 #Konig correction.
cq10[40]<-775 #Give Rebellin altered points

#Set up the integer programming problem
f.obj <- cq11
f.con <- rbind(rep(1,1000),rep(1,1000),cq10)
f.dir <- c("<=",">=","<=")
f.rhs <- c(33,25,7500) #Constraints on rider numbers and total 2010 cq points
fit1 <- lp("max",f.obj,f.con,f.dir,f.rhs,all.bin=TRUE)
cq2011$Name[which(fit1$solution==1)] #Riders corresponding to the solution
fit1$objval
sum(cq10[which(fit1$solution==1)])
cq2011$Name[which(fit1$solution==1 & cq10==0)]

So I ran Skibby's script, although I haven't checked for any missing riders or name changes or any funny things like that, nor have I checked to make sure it does what it says on the tin. But if we trust Skibby's previous code then the best team for 2016 (some changes still possible of course) is:

ULISSI Diego
COLBRELLI Sonny
KITTEL Marcel
CANCELLARA Fabian
GROENEWEGEN Dylan
PLANCKAERT Baptiste
BRAMBILLA Gianluca
DEMARE Arnaud
DUPONT Timothy
GAVAZZI Francesco
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
DUMOULIN Samuel
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
VAKOC Petr
ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin
GERRANS Simon
DEVENYNS Dries
MOSCON Gianni
PARDILLA BELLON Sergio
VICHOT Arthur
BETTIOL Alberto
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael
DEHAES Kenny
CORT NIELSEN Magnus
MCLAY Daniel
ENGER Sondre Holst
VANSPEYBROUCK Pieter
RICHEZE ARAQUISTAIN Maximiliano Ariel
PETIT Adrien
MEURISSE Xandro
CALMEJANE Lilian
BENFATTO Marco
HALVORSEN Kristoffer

with a score 24038 at a cost of 7500

I'll run it again after the next update to see if anything changes. Also let me know if anything seems egregiously wrong with the list and I'll try to sort it out tomorrow

P.S. If Matthew Goss would ride just one more season he'd be a shoe in for this list right :D

Thanks!

I have eight of those, and a few others were barely left out. A lot of riders here that nobody would've predicted.

Xandro Meurisse is pretty amazing. Incredibly well-payed in terms of CQ points vs results. 286 out of his 389 points are GC points, mainly obtained by finding himself in the right breakaway in small stage races. He's only got two podium places all year. And he's a unique pick in the CQ game. :D Sneekes really got lucky with that one (though you could see his points distribution coming: last year only 3 out of 83 points were non-GC).

A tiny nitpick: The ideal team is not 100% correct, as Richeze has had his CQ name changed since last year, so the script probably counts him as a 0-pointer, which means the team is 89 points above budget. But what the heck, it's not even the end of the season. Let's revisit this topic then!

Hey guys, nice to see some discussion going on here near the end of season. So I'm on a trip and am going camping for a few days without internet. Just thought I'd see if someone wanted to take care of this week's update - the Worlds are a big week, and I wouldn't be able to get to it until about Wednesday, so I thought I'd ask if someone wanted to volunteer to put it together when the CQ sheet is released.

Updated best team. Apologies for all of the long posts.

Note: This time I used the file containing only the points acquired in 2016 races. Previously I had used the points from the last 12 months. These will be the same in December of course

Update #39: scrooll to the top of the page

Well, the Worlds are in the bag, folks. It's windup time around here, with the Abu Dhabi Tour and Hainan as the last 2.HC, the Japan Cup as the last 1.HC, and a couple of smaller ones. But the die is pretty cast for the season. Let's see how it changed with the WCs this week.

This Week's Top Scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 Bicycle_Boy 594
2 LaVelocipede 536
3 scrooll07 510
4 kiilike 509
5 Martin 508

Well, in maybe one of the craziest happenings that I've seen in this game, Bicycle_Boy wins the Worlds week handily while not scoring a single point in the Road Race. (oh wait, Phinney got a few, but still). Their team's points this week comes from the ENTIRE PODIUM of the TT (Martin, Kiry, Castroviejo), as well as minor points from Phinney, Cammenaerts and Oliviera. Wow. LaVelocipede is one of the three teams with Sagan, so that's 400 of the 536 points right there. The rest are 96 from Ryan Mullen's surprising ride, 38 from Phinney and 2 points from good ol' Eddie Dunbar.

This Week's High Movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 scrooll07 (+11)
2 snccdcno (+10)
2 Martin (+10)
2 LaVelocipede (+10)
5 GP Blanco (+9)
5 Bicycle_Boy (+9)

the week goes to scrooll07, who was another of the 3 Sagan holders, buffered by Yves Lampaert's surprising TT points. There is a 3-way tie for 2nd place, including Martin whose solo pick Tom Boonen scored 210 points to be 1 measly point out of profit this year.

Green Jersey Competition

Rank Team Total
1 Emericlabordure 308
2 Eric10 221
3 scrooll07 180
4 Jancouver 175
5 togo95 174
6 freshman 173
6 Roda_na_Frente 173
8 Roubaix 169
9 Pentacycle 161
10 the_fool_on_the_hill 160

I said last week that this competition was pretty much sewn up, and that's true. But the podium was still in play, and with 30 points on the week (and 3 scoring weeks out of the last 4), scrooll07 flies into third place overall. No other points scored by the top 10.

Polka Dot Jersey Competition

Rank Team Points
1 Emericlabordure 155.4
2 scrooll07 130.3
3 the_fool_on_the_hill 118
4 freshman 117
5 Eric10 96
6 Roubaix 94.5
7 ironted 94
8 EvansIsTheBest 86.4
9 hilltopfinisher 81
10 just some guy 78

Same story here, as scrooll (who also won week 36 and 27) picks up max points to move into 2nd overall and ALMOST make it interesting. With a maximum 25 points per week on offer per week, scrooll sits a tantalizing 25.1 points behind leader Emericlabordure. Who knows, maybe scrooll (or one of the other top 4) will have a wildcard rider racking up the points in Hainan and Taihu Lake, but Emericlabordure still has at least a 1-week buffer.

Top 10 Overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (-) skidmark 15160
2 (-) jeroenk 14550
3 (+1) abbulf 14339
4 (+1) Squire 14308
5 (-2) Eric10 14084
6 (+2) search 14048
7 (+2) Hugo Koblet 14012
8 (-1) Kazistuta 13831
9 (-3) togo95 13791
10 (+1) greenedge 13745

Finishing a solid 26th on the week, and outscoring 2nd place jeroenk by 221 points, team skidmark solidifies a 600+ point lead in the standings, and goes over 2x the 7500 team price for the year. abbulf and Squire are in a dogfight for the podium, as both leap Eric10, with abbulf currently 31 points ahead. This definitely could come down to the wire. greenedge edges into the top 10, while Kjellus inches out, 7 points back.

spreadsheet at dropbox

Thanks for the update!

I need a lot of things to go my way to reach the podium. I really enjoyed Korsæth's Worlds performance, until now when I discovered his 33 points put abbulf in front by 31 points.

Abu Dhabi Tour
abbulf:
QUINTANA Dayer
CORT NIELSEN Magnus
Squire:
VANENDERT Jelle
POZZATO Filippo

Tour of Hainan
abbulf:
LUDVIGSSON Fredrik
ANDERSEN Asbjørn Kragh

Japan Cup
abbulf:
SKJERPING Kristoffer

I basically rely on Vanendert to give me the podium, while Quintana and Cort have to be limited to domestique duties. Luckily Dayer seems completely off form. Kragh Andersen will be really dangerous in Hainan. All in all, it's looking like an abbulf podium.

Thanks for the update Skidmark.

It has been a really fun year following the game. I definitely did not expect to contend for the podium, so it has been a great ride. Fingers crossed now that Cort keeps his good form until the season ends.

Update #40: Slapshot scores late

Hey guys. I just want to touch base about the end of the CQ season; obviously with the late Worlds and the Abu Dhabi Tour and the Japan Cup in the bag, it feels like it's over, and most riders' seasons are over. The rules, as per the first page of this thread, are that the game ends after the last major race of the year, which is .1 or higher. In the last couple of years, this has been the Tour of Taihu Lake in early November. Looking at CQ's calendar, there is the HC Hainan on right now, a 2.1 race in the UAE and the 1.1 UAE Cup... and then Taihu Lake is November 5th-13th. And THEN, something called the Tour of Fuzhou is apparently the 15th-20th, which is also 2.1. So the game won't officially end until then, and I'll keep throwing out updates before formally crowning a winner. I know it's mostly decided, but it's something like a GT with a few non-decisive stages at the end, where you know who has won and essentially what the overall looks like, but there are still points for classifications available.

Feel free to use this time to offer any feedback on this or any other part of the game though; it's not like there's a lot of cycling left to discuss. We can look at changes for next year if need be, or if this kind of unofficial wrap followed by a few weeks of minor points is fine, we can keep with it.

Anyway, to the update!

This Week's Top Scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 Slapshot 348
2 DJ Sprtsch 342
3 Sneekes 332
4 LaVelocipede 328
5 yoyokt 254

Slapshot squeaks out the win this week, their second of the year (winning week 13, as well as a 2nd place and 2 4th places over the season). Their team gets points from a variety of riders, including the rare Contador, but also a collection of rare riders - Juul Jensen, Anacona, Wallays, Ryan Mullen, Martin Toft Madsen. Just the type of assortment to take out a late season win. DJ Sprtsch gets points from Japan Cup winner (and a guy who has FINALLY broken out after three years of not living up to promise) Davide Villella, Vincenzo Nibali and Julien Bernard. Sneekes rounds out the podium with points from Nibali and Villella but also Rob Power. The top 4 were only separated by 20 points this week!

This Week's High Movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 LaVelocipede (+11)
2 Sneekes (+8)
3 Object (+6)
3 Jpettersen (+6)
5 hilltopfinisher (+5)
5 Blues in the bottle (+5)
5 HelgeBlendet (+5)
5 DJ Sprtsch (+5)
5 Slapshot (+5)
5 Jakob747 (+5)

There is a... little bit of a tie for 5th place here. Not surprising for the end of the season when points are few and placings are somewhat cemented. But anyway, LaVelocipede takes the top honors this week, moving up 11 spots. Their team was one of the two this year to have Kangert, who turned out to be a pretty good pick, more than doubling his points in the end. Sneekes, uh, sneaks onto the podium of this one as well, and Object ties with Jpettersen for third.

Some movement here - with the week's win, Slapshot jumps from outside the top 10 onto the podium! No one is near striking distance of the leader, of course, but togo95 leapfrogs Jancouver into the top 5 with 4 points for 14th on the week, and LaVelocipede's strong showing brings their team into the top 10 as well.

Not as much movement here - Sneekes and hilltopfinisher are the only scorers in the top 10 (and both move into the top 10), while weekly winner LaVelocipede moves to only 1.7 points out of 10th place.

Very minor shuffling, with only two of the top 10 teams scoring over 100 points this week (they were the two teams that move up). Our highly respected game founder Hugo Koblet looks to be on track for his best finish in this game, moving up two spots into the top 5. No movement in and out of the top 10, though, and it is unlikely that the bit points on offer for the rest of the season will do much more than shuffle a couple of minor places around.

So, this is the unofficial end of the season. I'll have a formal wrap at the end of it all in about a month, and weekly updates will continue, but I at least want to say now - thank you all for playing the game this year, and year after year. If you're checking out now (or have done so awhile ago), look for next year's game thread by about December 10th. If you feel like some wrapup discussion in this thread, whether it's to go over your team, talk about riders you were surprised by, run through highlights/lowlights of your CQ team season, now is the time to do so!

Big congratulations to Skidmark!

It was a dissapointing year yet again for myself, standing as 26. now I think with a solid team but with some failures and dissapointments and also simply just not enough standout picks, like Skidmarks Petit for instance. But with me dissapointing (myself) every year so far in the contest, it just makes it even more impressive seing Skidmarks strong performance year after year after year.

But I will keep trying to get a winning combination in this game and Im looking forward to next years game.

Update #40: Slapshot scores late Feel free to use this time to offer any feedback on this or any other part of the game though; it's not like there's a lot of cycling left to discuss. We can look at changes for next year if need be, or if this kind of unofficial wrap followed by a few weeks of minor points is fine, we can keep with it.
Well random thought I had at the start of the season to do with the popularity. Every year when teams are announced there are a number of people who lose hope/interest immediately because they have missed an 'obvious' pick. Think Kittel, Gerrans, Gavaria, Porte
Perhaps the option of a single rider for rider swap. Any rider in the top 10 on the popularity table for another rider currently in your roster.
That way people aren't cherry picking rare picks they missed, but the 'dammit, my team has no hope' feelings can be reduced.

Well done Skidmark, in both the result and the exceptional job you have done running the game (With thanks to those who helped out with updates over the year)

There were 11 riders on at least half of all teams. While many of them were good picks, several weren't, so it isn't really the be-all and end-all to have the most popular riders (though skidmark did have them all).

KITTEL Marcel
164 -> 1198

BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
149 -> 108

PHINNEY Taylor
174 -> 232

GERRANS Simon
244 -> 571

MARTIN Daniel
526 -> 993

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
151 -> 833

CANCELLARA Fabian
449 -> 1152

DEMARE Arnaud
464 -> 980

VAN GARDEREN Tejay
622 -> 574

LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
297 -> 763

MARTIN Tony
624 -> 657

4 of them (Betancur, Phinney, TJvG and Tony) weren't good picks and teams would have been better off without them.

The examples were the ones I remember people over the years being upset about.
Gerrans 2014: 511 >> 1736
Ewan 2015: 95 >> 716
Porte: 2015: 415 >> 1359
Gavaria 2016: 151 >> 833
Boonen 2014: 139 - 783

Partially the suggestion was driven by perceived impact at the start of the game, with people losing interest quickly.
I'm not 100% locked on to the idea, just a thought as it can be annoying when you realise. It was only Gavaria in that list which I missed and given there is a number of riders who only just made the short list cut who I would have dropped
