Well, I will refrain from posting my team just now (when I wont be able to see people criticize me :), but I look that much forward to the overall selection stats, so I would like to make a bold statement:

These five riders will be amongst the 10 most picked riders:

Marcel Kittel
Taylor Phinney
Fernando Gaviria
Arnaud Demare
Simon Gerrans

(Needless to say, I picked them all)

These five guys will be dark horses for the top20 most selected riders:

Laurens Ten Dam
Theo Bos (both because of their low prices)
Jose Acevedo (might be a top5 pick)
Luka Mezgec
Michael Valgren

(Again, picked them all, although both Bos and Ten Dam are pretty boring picks IMO)

Let's see how these predictions hold up tomorrow, when the pick stats most likely will be revealed.

Good luck to everyone, have fun!

I didn't pick Gaviria. I don't think he'll be all that his first season as a pro. A bit of a gamble on my part, but whatever.

Tell you what, I'm actually pretty ahead of the game on the popularity team entries. I still have a couple of hours (maybe three? Four?) until I can have the final numbers, but let's have a game within a game. It's called "predict the most popular riders". Here's how it works - people can guess here who you think each of the 10 most popular riders are, and how many teams have picked each of them, and then we can see who's closest. Everyone will start with 0 points, and for every name you get right, your score is how far off you were from them being picked. So if you say Valverde will be one of the most popular ten riders and he'll be picked by 100 teams, and he is on the list but picked by 80, you get 20 points. If you pick a rider not on the list, you get penalized 20 points as well as the difference in popularity between what you thought and that rider's actual score. So if you picked Valverde at 100 but actually he's picked by zero teams, you get 120 points. Lowest total score is the best at predicting.

There are 144 teams.

Kittel should be on everyone's team. He was the only absolute, 100% no brainer.

I'll be curious to see how many went for both or either Martins.

Not sure who Jose Acevedo is. Do you mean Janier Acevedo? If so, I never seriously considered him but that might be an ok pick. Still I don't see him being top 5 pick. As the Brits say, he's been rubbish for 2 years now and I don't see any reason for it to change.

Considered Mezgec but he didn't score last year when he should have been 2nd sprinter on a team built for sprinters with Kittel mostly out. I figure he'll be working for Ewan and Bling this year.

I thought I took Valgren but looks like I cut him in the end.

Kittel hans't in my team , but my pick for the most chosen or top five rider i will guess Miguel Angel Lopez.

I didn't go for Gerrans as I don't like him and I hope Orica rides for Bling this year. Stybar is risky but I like him and wanted a good classic rider. Cancellara would be less risky but I fear he won't score much more than last year. Vuillermoz, Yates A., Latour and Barguil are also risky but I like them and think they can with luck double their score.

I don't understand that at all. At 21, he's already beaten Cav and Greipel in head-to-head sprints. The only he won't obliterate that score is injury or a focus on the track.

Speaking of the Olympics, it definitely made picking a bit harder this year.

This was definitely a challenge - you never know who's going to win the Oly course. No one would have guessed the Vino/Uran/Kristoff podium in 2012, that's for sure. And even if it goes 'predictably', is it going to be a 2013 Florence kinda selection (ie. Valv, Costa, Purito, Nibali) or will punchy hill guys be able to make it over (Gilbert, Sagan, Kwiat)? And the worlds - hell, I dunno, if it was a trade team race I'd guess QuickStep would take it apart with echelons, but I have no idea.

I didn't even think about that. I figure it'll be contested by riders that cost way too much. I was more thinking about scheduling/freshness issues as it affects the entire year for a bunch of riders.

That's because I run out of points although I left out Nibali. I also haven't heard of some riders I included, namely RODRIGUEZ MARTIN Cristian and BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley. Also after finalizing my rooster for the emerging riders game I saw I missed some good youngsters but I didn't bother to change my team as I'm only aiming for the top 100.

I Understand , but Bernal i know , is a younger colombian climber , that will race with Androni this season

Agreed about Kittel being the most picked one. I also think Lopez, Herklotz and Gerrans will be very high. Regarding Martins, I took Daniel and couldn't decide between Tony and Van Garderen, but in the end went with the latter. That was just a gut feeling though, wouldn't be able to give any particular reason.

I like your pick of Looij, rote lanterne. I couldn't fit him in my team, but agree that he could do well potentially.

The hardest thing for me is trying to block out my biases. I usually tend to lean towards riders I already like and against those I dislike but I tried really hard not to do that this year. I actually picked a rider who is one of my least favorite in the peloton. I still won't cheer for him but I will happily take his points if he scores them. Still, I'll be happier if he has another sh*t season.

As someone who has picked Rohan Dennis 3 years in a row but not this year, I'm a bit jealous. Dunno how much he can improve his score, but a) the Hour Record took it out of him for months this year, so there could be results there, and b) if he does both the Oly and Worlds TT, he could rake in the points.

That was the plan. Between Rohan Dennis + Tony Martin they should go 1-2 at the WC + Olympics ITT so that should be 800 points and cover 1/2 the cost between them. (Plus MiniPhinney and perhaps even Fabian?)

I like this pick and hope he does good.

My guess for the most picked riders (in that order)
1. Kittel
2. Gerrans
3. Phinney
4. Gaviria
5. Tony Martin
6. Demare
7. Betancur
8. Daniel Martin
9. Cancellara
10. Kudus
