Hey Skidmark, I pm'ed you, and also with the team for yoyokt who can't get online to give in her team tonight

Appreciate all your work, and don't see why people are making it out like your gaining some unfair advantage same people who would never help out either

I have never played this game but one italian rider looks as an absolute must have to me. Surely the easiest pick I made.

That's got me worried :)

I have 7 Italians but wouldn't put any of them in that category. I missed Gerrans and Demare last year so hope I haven't made a similar mistake

7 ITA, BEL
3 FRA, SPA, COL
2 RUS
1 from assorted others, but no Dutchies

21 WT and 12 PCT

0 Sky riders last year but 5(!) this year. 2 each from UAE, Lotto Soudal, Wanty and Nippo. Much better mixture of classics/GT riders than last time and have also gone from 0 to 4/5 sprinters. Have tried to be a bit less emotional in the choices, particularly with the big picks. And my New Year's Resolution is not to live in the past, so have not gone for a certain Colombian..

I just managed to get a team together before the deadline, I have zero ambition to do well this year but my team is fun (and after looking at the stats absurdly young). Can't wait for the new season to start and good luck to all.

Oldest: 32

Point repartition:
0 1000+

9 100-249
14 0-99

Nationalities:

I'd categorize only five-six riders as must have this year and two are Italian and I have another I consider to be one of the better bargain from the rest of the riders available.

I am still not too sure who these must have Italians are. I am curious to find out. I have 3 and although 2 of them might be on quite a few lists, I could only justify one of them as kind of must have and even then I am not sure he is indispensable. I doubt many people have my 3rd Italian, justifiably so as he is a bit of a risky pick...

I'd say one of the Italians is among the top two most obvious picks. Not entirely sure who the other one he's talking about is. Could be a certain ProConti hilly sprinter with two broken collarbones last season.

I have six Italians, just to be sure ;)

EvansIsTheBest, nice to see you back! Would be too bad if someone from the top 5 overall rankings didn't return to the game. Now hopefully no. 6 (ingsve) has also showed up.

It's 23:59 CET on the 3rd, which means it's publication deadline! No more changes, no more teams, feel free to post and discuss starting now.

I'm working on the popularity tab and am about 60 teams in, will try to get done before I have to go out for dinner but it's more likely it'll be up in about 7 hours or so. Until then, let's just have some discussion. Good luck everyone!

This is really hard... I already built 2 teams with completely different riders and I am happy with both of them... Can't decide between some old guys that changed teams and should have better season and some really young guys that have a ton of potential...
I used completely different tactics. First of all I made a team of "must have riders". This year it was around 15 riders. Then I build a long list of riders (this year around 50 names) who for ever the reason I think might do better next year and try to combine them so that in the final, I wont exceed 7500 points and the will have 33 names.
This year I spend around 7-8 hours creating a team, more then ever before. The short list of must have riders was done within half hour, but then it became a nightmare. I had to alter a game plan, and had to drop some interesting "must have" riders too so I would fit in game rules.
In the end I am confused too ;-)

To the bolded: In my view, there are only 3-4 absolute must-haves. Maybe just two. Most of the other spots in my team have been changing a lot. There are a few more than the must-haves which have been constant, but that's mostly because I decided early on that they would definitely be in my team, and I don't expect them to be in almost everybody else's team.

My strategy analysis for this year was from a slightly different perspective than last time, so this year my team shouldn't look like skidmark's less talented brother. I'm still going for the "scientific approach", but I'm pretty sure I won't top the popularity rankings again this year, and I might even have a potentially unique pick.

Hoping to break into the podium spots in 2017!

I agree this season has the fewest certain picks ever in the game and I also think only 2-4 are completely must haves. Then on the other hand there is a big group of riders that are obviously good picks, and I have also had maybe 10-15 of those in my team at all time besides the 4 certain ones, but all those might end up being sacrificed if needed to fit the puzzle. With the lack of very obvious picks this year I would also predict that the winningscore might end up a bit lower than previous years.

I'm curious to see if we agreed on the must-haves. Degenkolb and Viviani should be absolutely nailed on for every team, and for the other semi-must-haves I was thinking along the lines of König and Power. Considered throwing Spilak in there too, but you can easily win the game without him, I guess.

The last four riders removed from my team:

KWIATKOWSKI Michal 611
TAARAMÄE Rein 321
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao 262
MARTINELLI Davide 196

Swapped Kwiatko for BONIFAZIO & NAVARDAUSKAS combo so it will be fun to watch if those two can bring more points than the flower-boy.

The other three, I just could not fit them in but they would be on my team if any other rider was injured etc.

Degenkolb, Aru, Viviani, Küng really stand out for me. Malori has a lower ceiling but is proably one of the safest and best picks available.

I somehow have a couple more unread messages in my inbox than a week ago, but I've scoured my inbox and am certain I've got everyone. My team:

Had rememberered the deadline wrong as 5/1 and had planned a couple of evenings to finish the team, so missing those it ended in quite a panic so had to make all the final decisions very quickly.

The only certain picks for me were Aru, Degenkolb and Spilak and then König, Landa were also close to be certain. The rest could have been replaced though many were in the team from the start till the end like Lampaert, Viviani, Küng and Minali, but I think all riders that in theory could have been sacrificed.

In the end most importantly I was very much in doubt about picking Kwiatkowski or Gaviria or perhaps both. I liked but were not convinsed about a lot of 200-400 riders so that would have meant sacrificing several of those. I would particulary have liked to skip Sam Oomen who despite the huge talent will likely struggle to improve enough next season being as young as he is, but the rest were harder to sacrifice as all seemed good picks. Anyways me having to decide very quickly in the end meant I did not have enough time to considder these sacrifices and in the end I just had to go with only one of Gaviria and Kwiatkowski. I feel I might regret this as Gaviria should be a good pick. However the conservative part of me still ended on cheaper Kwiatkowski, that should potentially improve more compared to last season despite me being more sure Gaviria would improve. I was still very close to change Kwiatkowski and Ooomen to Gaviria and Sprengers or Vervaeke. Also in the very end I considdered changing Dillier, Arredondo and Power to Vervaeke, Sprengers and Looij. So Sprengers, Vervaeke, Looij and Gaviria are the biggest losers in my quick final selectionproces.

Anyways the team ended up like this

ARU Fabio 777 (obvious pick with the failed 2016 and the Giro-Vuelta double)
KWIATKOWSKI Michal 611 (have a feeling he might dissapoint, but too afraid to leave him out, afterall scored almost 2000 2 years ago and could do so again)
DEGENKOLB John 550 (obvious after all the missed races)
LANDA MEANA Mikel 479 (cant do worse and should do a lot better)
LAMPAERT Yves 391 (solid pick that missed a lot of points due to injury last season that he should get again in 2017)
BONIFAZIO Niccolo 347 (clear nr. 1 sprinter for Bahrain, should mean he can improve a lot and also has the talent to do so)
JANS Roy 347 (replacing B. Planckaert in his new team, Planckaert climbs better but Jans is not bad and is quicker so should be able to score big in the 1.1 races, is a likely winner of the European Tour)
OOMEN Sam 336 (I think he is my weakest pick, but still a supertalent now 1 year older and very likely to improve. How much is the question.
SPILAK Simon 301 (obvious for the price with his huge potential in the weely races)
VIVIANI Elia 275 (still one of the fastest in the world and should improve a lot back focussing 100% on the road)
KÖNIG Leopold 264 (obvious pick after his unlucky 2016)
SEPULVEDA Eduardo 244 (has been quite unlucky and should be able to improve a lot if he escapes bad luck)
WALSCHEID Maximilian 239 (a wild card where I was very much in doubt. He should have huge potential as a new supersprinter, but Im in doubt about how much chances he will get compared to riders like Arndt and Bauhaus. I hope he will show quickly that he is the fastest of the 3 and if so he could become a great pick)
VANDENBERGH Stijn 238 (a pick a bit with the heart but now finally a captain in the classics, should give Vandenbergh a big chance to at least double his points.)
KÜNG Stefan 225 (fairly obvious pick as a huge talent that missed a lot of 2016, should improve well)
BOOM Lars 212 (bad 2016 season but he should be able to revenche that)
MAMYKIN Matvey 199 (huge talent that should improoe well)
DILLIER Silvan 190 (2016 was compromissed a lot by his track-rding. He should be back and at least reach the score from 2014 and 2015 in 2017. Likely not a superpick, but a obvious solid pick that will at least double his score)
ALBANESE Vincenzo 159 (one of the few neos that made my team. Should be very well suited to the italian 1 day races and perhaps be the guy replacing some of Colbrellis results in these)
DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd 158 (too much potential to leave out at the price, despite getting sceptical, but cant do worse at least)
VALLS FERRI Rafael 129 (very unlucky 2016, the potential is definetly there to make a huge profit)
BRESCHEL Matti 116 (I dont think he is done yet like some do, and he still has huge potential if he escapes bad luck)
BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto 108 (likely waste of a spot, but did not dare leave him out)
GOUGEARD Alexis 107 (hard to ignore him getting over 500 points in 2015 and still only 23 years old so could easily do that again)
CONSONNI Simone 89 (another neo making the team, due to his huge potential for the italian one day races. Hopefully he will get enough chances for himself, despite being quite similar to Swift)
PONZI Simone 78 (a boring pick but very cheap for a guy normally making around 500 points a year and that were set back by injury in 2016. He should be a solid pick)
INTXAUSTI ELORRIAGA Beñat 79 (missed almost all of the seaaon and to good a rider not to be picked this cheap despite being on Team Sky and likely mostly riding as a helper)
POWER Robert 77 (a bit of a joker after his long break and doubtfull he will fullfill the potential as quick now, but still a huge talent that should improve and could improve
TROFIMOV Yury 62 (should be a solid pick for the price in his new role for Caja Rural)
VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume 61 (sceptical but huge potential still and now he gets his chance as captain, could do very well if motivated)
MINALI Riccardo 26 ( very cheap for the new nr. 1 sprinter on Astana)
ARREDONDO MORENO Julian David 17 (had sort of decided to skip him but then in the end the puzzle fitted with him and cant do worse and could be well be a pick like Marko Kump in 2015 if the seating-problems gets solved.
DOULL Owain 7 (doubtfull how much chances he will get but Moscon still did well with Sky and very cheap for a huge talent like him)

At various moments I had the likes of Gaviria, Ewan, Kwiatkowski, Bonifazio and Oomen in draft selections, but ultimately they didn't make the cut. Cannot believe I missed Ponzi, may well regret that one. But overall I am quite happy with my team and should be interesting to see how they go.
