Impressive; of course now the question is which riders you didn't guess

Well at some point I assumed the Dutch rider at Quickstep would be Terpstra. That's where things went wrong. I also didn't think Senechal would be your French rider on a non-French team, I thought it would be Julien Bernard. (So I also didn't predict Conci)

I didn't bother to guess who would be the Belgian rider at Sport Vlaanderen. Too many possibilities. Next year you should mention your leftover budget as well

Mind you I finished 100th last year so no use copying my team :)

My team isn't as 'top-heavy' as most of the other teams, since I haven't picked anyone who had more than 629 CQ points in 2017. Hope I won't regret this...

I kind of understand both choosing Porte and Valverde. Both had their seasons cut short, but there is no guarantee whatsoever their springs will be nearly as good as last year.

Valverde is getting older, has had this injury, so are you really banking on him getting 2700+ points? Ludicrous if you ask me, that's one of the biggest high risk picks one could take.

Porte? High ceiling. Could get 2000+ with relative ease, but he'd need to be just as fortunate as last year in the lead-up to the Tour and actually finish a GT placing high and maybe going into the Vuelta or Worlds and scoring big as well. He's never done it in his career yet and I haven't been convinced ever that he will suddenly be able to pull it off without something getting in the way.

Even with a 1000+ point pick you want to be relatively comfortable that they will add 50% to their score. So 1000->1500. Maybe if your pick is Valverde you want at least 600 points extra for it to be worth it. I don't know. Or you're banking on your low cost riders scoring many hundreds of points each.

A mostly obvious team which pretty much picked itself this year. 32 riders straight off which left about 480 pts for one rider and it came down to the two young Sunweb riders Andersen or Oomen. In the end I just went for the one that I guessed would be less popular. Looking at the other teams I don't think there is anyone popular that I didn't at least think about.

Yeh Porte could have a 2016 (or a 2011  ) but I'd say closer to 2017 (with Froome out he might win the Dauphine!) is more likely so he just needs to stay in one piece in July...

1500 is OK, he would have got there last year if the Spring wind didn't own him.

@Kazistuta:
That's a good team, and very similar to mine. :D

You went with a few of my favourites who I was close to picking (De Plus, Vervaeke). So far you're the only other team with Brenton Jones, I think. I'm not convinced by Vanmarcke though, and I hope that could be where I beat you.

I can see you continuing your stellar record in this game.

I went for a pretty top heavy team (I think) where I was able to fit a lot of my favourites in. I hope to place somewhere in the middle of the pack as I am not experienced at all with picking a team like this and probably have missed some pretty obvious picks! On top of that I was pretty late, but whatever. Good luck to everybody, I am very much looking forward to seeing how this game will develop. The 3 most common nations on my team are not unexpectedly Spain with 9 riders, Colombia with 6 and Italy with 5.

Absolutely loving this!

You will probably not win, but your team will be fun to cheer for.

Just one thing... Where's Barcelo? You could also have chucked in Cristian Rodriguez, who I think will do well for Caja. Aranburu too. And Brandao!

Some of the picks in the range 101-36 points are not too inspiring, I think. Low points ceilings for a lot of those guys.
Yeah, looking back at it, thats also where I am the most skeptical about my team. Not only are they low ceiling, but they really aren't sexy. I still have some faith in Breschel, but I seem to be the only one. Preidler is low ceiling, but I still remember his win in the Giro and he is relatively young still, so he should also improve from a bad 17.
Im okay with Moreno, he had a horrible 2017, but the changed team to Deiko and will be one of their main riders if not their main rider in small stages races and hard one day races. Definitely worth a shot, he could be good. even though he is pretty old and isn't funny.
Navardauskas and Nizzolo are common picks, especially the latter. Pedrero is just a favourite pick, he climbed very well on a few occasions last year, so whatever. Lots of climbers on this team tho.
Haussler, Kantert and Moser are pretty common picks as well - especially Kangert. I have no problem with them in hindsight.
I like Ganna, extremely strong and young. Could do decently and seems pretty rare, I like that.
Not sold on Phinney, I have a hard time coping with the hipster Americans from Cannondale lol, but he is a strong rider which simply should be able to produce a lot more than he does.

So to conclude, I would like to have Breschel, Preidler and Phinney back, Im good with the rest.

What I regret the most is not picking Sondre Holst Enger instead of useless picks such as Egholm or Bouhanni - both where picked 100% for the lolz. Next time I will also go through all pro conti teams which I sadly didn't this time around.. and yes, I should have picked Barcelo, thats really, really stupid, should have stuck with my theme. The Caja-guys are funny, but I dont really know anything about them, but I will for sure follow them.

So far we're the only two who picked Ion Izagirre I think, Valv. If he continues where he left off last season and doesn't crash halfway through the seaon, I reckon he'll be a good pick for us. :D

Yeah. I picked him with my heart as I initially had Moscon and also flirted with Ala, but I just thought screw it. He crashed out of Andalucia as well in the time trial so he should have gotten a lot more comfortable on his time trial bike over the winter now, lol. I think he easily can get 1500! Or maybe not, I actually didn't remember he had such a relatively good Ardennes-campaign.

@Valv.Piti:
The ones I was most sceptical about was Breschel, Phinney, Preidler, Pedrero and Moreno, as you seemed to agree with, but also Ganna, Fernandez, Haussler and Navardauskas.

Ganna is strong, but I don't see where his points are coming from. Flat stage races with a TT are becoming extinct, and he's too young for the cobbled classics. Fernandez probably has a ton of riders ahead of him at Movistar, and I just don't think he's that good (but I get that he's a 'theme' rider for you). Haussler is done, I think. Navardauskas is too valuable as a domestique to get many chances, and Colbrelli will block a lot of them anyway. If you look at how he scored his points at Cannondale, it was very random and inconsistent, with a lot of them coming at the Worlds, which doesn't suit him this year, and the Circuit de la Sarthe of all things. And then there's the heart issue. He said it's okay, but he hasn't tried all out efforts over a period of time yet, so you never know. I didn't feel Navardauskas was better value, all things considered, than some others in the price range.

Barcelo was my '34th' pick, so to speak, and I'm surprised not to see him in more teams.

I looked at Izagirre, but I think it was the 200 extra Ardennes points that put me off. He can of course repeat it, but he'll need a very good season to be a better pick than other options in the price range.

I start to regret not picking halversen. I'm usually rather concerned about super young picks and riders who are in their first year at sky (just compare landa and kwiat from 2016 to 2017). However I ignored that he is basically the only sprinter of the team and that he already had way more points two years ago. I don't expect him to be a game changer but he probably would have been a very good pick. Definitely better than someone like serry.

I didn't really follow cycling that much last year, so once the season was over my "longlist" for this year had 4 guys on it. I managed to fill that a bit late in November, early December and was looking forward to extended research late in December. Thus, I just pasted every young rider and every rider that declined into my longlist thinking I'll have plenty of time to go through each and every one. Well,,, I did that... 4 hours before the deadline hit... panicing slightly...

...and by going through it, I mean: Go to the CQ profile, check if he has a team, look at his scores and guess how much he'll score based on past scores and random extrapolation. Without checking team status, injuries, or planned races and declared goals for the season.
-> Sorting by profit expected, kicking out the two most expensive riders since I was over budget and replacing them with two guys that keep me below 7500 I ended up with a team I have absolute no confidence in perfoming well this year.

With Valverde aging (hopefully for my team), he can claim his position.

MOSCON Gianni 864
Very versatile. Could improve. Of course he can be an idiot but hopefully Sky can control his mind.

LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 629
If he says on his bike, he could double his score. A gamble considering his bike handling.

CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban 505
No brainer

TERPSTRA Niki 417
He is getting older but he missed parts of last years classics.

VENTURINI Clément 356
His focus is now on road racing. With his speed he could do well in all of those French 1.1's.

GAUDU David 352
Hopefully this year will be his big break through.

VAN POPPEL Danny 287
His focus is back on sprinting. Don't forget he used to be a big sprinting prospect and better than Groenewegen.

MAS NICOLAU Enric 285
Showed some good racing last year and the GC department at Quick Step is not that big.

Could do well in the hilly races.

COSNEFROY Benoit 191
Same as Venturini. Hopefully the goals won't clash because they are on the same team.

BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto 159
Was back on track until his Vuelta crash

HALVORSEN Kristoffer 151
Quality sprinter.

SIVAKOV Pavel 142
Nice climbing prospect. Hopefully he won't be Bernal's adjudant.

KENNAUGH Peter 137
Showed glimpses of his talent in the past. Now he ride for his own goals.

JAKOBSEN Fabio 118
Nice sprinter. Should have his chances in the smaller races like Handzame etc.

OWEN Logan 91
Do not what to expect.

WALLAYS Jelle 80
Hopefully the harder 1.1's in Belgium will be his hunting ground.

NIZZOLO Giacomo 66

DE BIE Sean 57
Dropped back to pro-conti. Has the potential to score much more than last year.

OLIVIER Daan 53
Used to be a great climber. Hopefully this will be his year.

Hopefully Bardiani will race Lankawi.

CAPIOT Amaury 32

Really disappointed to miss Intxausti. I had Phinney, Silin and Craddock as my shortlist for the last cheap place, but Intxausti would have been way better.

I considered Quintana, but preferred the upside of Thomas and Izagirre.

Amador would have been more popular I thought.
