Evenepoel was definitely a case of "I'll bite me if he's actually good this year and I didn't pick him" for me. 0 pointers don't hurt and I had more faith in him than some other guys available. I'm happy if he scores 100+ points and only disappointed if he scores less than ?20... idk...

Anyway... my team for the TdU looks kinda ok-ish, I guess.

Pöstlberger
O'Connor
Philipsen
Bauhaus
Bettiol
Kanter
Hofstede

Rather late to the show, but here's an analysis of my team.

MOSCON Gianni
It's a gamble and i quite like it. He had a bad spring last year and obviously with him slated to ride the Giro as a super dom there will be concerns whether he can be in good form for the spring classics.
But last year showed what an amazing talent he is and he could be points scoring machine with his all terrain abaility.
It came down to him vs Quintana for the expensive rider's pick and went for the high risk high reward pick rather than chosing one of my favourite riders. Last year I went for Fanboy pick Gaviria over Alaphillippe and it cost me dearly. This time i've reversed it. Hoping for 2000 points or somewhere close to it.

NIBALI Vincenzo
Had to pick him since i am a big fan. Bit of a risky pick and if i wasn't such a fan might not have even picked him.
Will he be back to his best in the GT's? I have serious doubts. There's a packed field in the Giro, he'll have to really master his voodoo talents to even get on the podium. He's highly unlikely to repeat his MSR win.
There are more questions than answers but he's lo squalo the champion, never to be underestimated.
Hoping for 1000+

BOASSON HAGEN Edvald
Surprised that only 8 others have picked him. Would've thought he would be a safe bet to score over 1000 points.
He suffered an injury early last season, but probably did not put him off much during the classics season.
Riding for DD isn't problem, he's scored more than 1000 points for three consecutive seasons prior to last season.
World's course should suit him well. No reason not to expect another 1000 point season.

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
Third staright year of picking him and if you picked him at 1250, why not at 600?
Obviously there are concerns in going to a team like UAE, but with Neil Stepehens and Alan Peiper on board it looks like they are moderninsing. There have been a host of changes in the support staff and they''ve even added Frrome's pyscho doc. Hoping he can stay on his bike and if so, should deliver at least 1200 points.

GALLOPIN Tony
Another pick I'm pleased with, only 7 others have picked him, so he'll play an important role on where i'll finish in the game.
Last year he had a horrendous classics campaign and pulled out of the Tour early, even though he made amends in the Vuelta.
Will he be wasted being a domestique for Bardet or will he get his chances in the classics and the short stage races? That's the dilemma with him, but I'm thinking he should have enough freedom for him to perform in races and score around 1000 points. World's RR could also suit him.

ZAKARIN Ilnur
A return to the Giro & Vuelta should see him at least doubling his points. A bit wary of Russians burning out too quickly though, hopefully Zakarin's time is not yet up.

BOUHANNI Nacer
Had his worse season since 2011, but even though we've seen the rise of Laporte, Coffidis do need him.
Believe he'll sort out his differences with the team and be back scoring over 1000 points.

ARU Fabio
A bit wary of picking him, but if he returns to form should easily score around 1200 points. Figured out he'll be very popular so less of an impact on the game. Playing it safe.

GAUDU David
Probably the pick i'm most worried about.
Hoped that he'll get to lead the Vuelta and some smaller French races. Seems to be a decent hilly one day racer too. Expected at least 800 poitns when i picked him, but a bit worried that in a recent interview he siad that he'll most ride the same races as Pinot, which isn't too good for CQ scoring. If he scores about 500 pts might be a waste of a pick :(

KITTEL Marcel
Being the most popluar pick, his impact would be minimized, and the merger of DUbai & Abu Dhabi Tour takes away some of his most likely high scoring opportunities.
Still a return to winning LS's most favourite race and a couple of stage wins at the Tour along with some high placings in the sprinter's one day races should see him score atleast 600 points. 1000+ would be bonus.

FELLINE Fabio
Late season results last year seems to indicate that he has gotten over his illness. Has the all terrain ability and if he truly hits form can score over 1000 points.

VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume
My unique pick, and will be cheering him madly. Had a look at Team CCC's line up and there's not much quality other than GVA there. Figured out he'll be the last man standing for GVA and should get a decent chance of scoring points for himself. A interview with him later, has confirmed the fact. My team was also a little light on cobbled classics riders, so went for him.

THEUNS Edward
Back to Trek, where he has done well in the past. Obviously Stuyven, Mads P & Degenkold should all be higher in the pecking order than him but he has a fast finish and 600 points is not out of the question.

PADUN Mark

Excting yougster who i'm hoping will improve a lot. Should get his fair share of chances at Bahrain.
Looking for around 500 points.

DURBRIDGE Luke
Looked like a beast in the cobbled classics in 2017, had an early season injury last year resulting in an underwhelming classics campaign. I' like to pick a couple of Aussies in my team to have the nice early feeling of getting some points on the board and he has not dissapointed so far this year.
With the start he's got, if he doesn't score 500 + i'll be dissapointed.

MEINTJES Louis
Boring rider and boring pick. But should at least Zubeldia his way to a top in a weak field at the Tour.
Looking for around 500 points.

PÖSTLBERGER Lukas
Another rider picked on promise though he's now 27.
Might get wasted on domestique duties but has that rouleur skills to score some decent points.
Will be satisfied with 300 points.

SEPULVEDA Eduardo
A returnee from last year. Dissapointing first season with Movistar but wanted couple of riders who could score in the small spanish stage races and went with him over other Movistar guys such as Carretero, Valls and Castrillo. Some points from San Juan would be nice too.

DE LA PARTE GONZALEZ Victor

Picked after looking at Team CCC line up. Should get his chance at some one week stage races with only Antunes and Pauwels being the other likely leaders.

SWIFT Ben
Back to Sky and with MSR and a home World's with a course that should suit him , at 72 points why not?

Luke Rowe
Recovered from injuries. Decent classics campaign should see him score at least 200.

RODRIGUEZ MARTIN Cristian
Selected for the small Spanish stage races.

ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin
At Coffidis he should have opportunity to go in breakaways and will get to ride the Tour and Vuelta.
If he gets lucky with a couple of stage wins could score at least 400.

BETTIOL Alberto
Back with JV. No reason why shouldn't score at least 300 points.

PARET-PEINTRE Aurélien
My french Neo Pro pick this year. Hope he'll follow in the footsteps of Cosnefroy and Madouas.

ALBANESE Vincenzo
Picked him again. Surely now's the time to live up to the hype.

BOOM Lars
Hope he'll perform in some of the smaller cobbled races.

KÄMNA Lennard
Big Talent and hope he'll bounce back, but did not know about his motivational issues when i picked the team.
Probably would have left him if I did.

VANHOUCKE Harm
Had injury problems last year. Lambrecht scored 300 points in his debut season, so expecting him to do well too.

VAN STAEYEN Michael

At Roompot and sprinting for himself. Looking for at least 200 points here.

RIVERA SERRANO Kevin
Another returnee. Believed in the hype last year and picked him at 155. So why not at 20?
Could be the next Bernal/Sosa or dissapear back to Costa Rica.

SCOTSON Callum

Another Aussie pick. Looked for Points at the Nationals and the Hammer Series. So far so Good with 14.

Evenepoel
Already Discussed.

I like your team, the asian. It looks really strong. As you mention, Gaudu could disappointed, as it seems like his progression stalled last year. The potential is definitely there, though. I'm also not 100% sold on Gallopin, but he could prove me wrong for sure.

Similar for Vakoc, the other popular zero-pointer at QST. That was a really bad accident. At this point I just hope he still has a career racing and a good start would be to get at least half a season of just finishing races - maybe I'll pick him next season

Yeah Vakoc is in some ways harder to predict than Evenepoel - he could get back to a good chunk of his previous level and score a few hundred points, or he could prove that he'll never get back to race shape a la Malori. Recovery from such a serious injury over such a long period of time creates a big range of possibilities, and the actual range between winning races and being spit out the back is quite small physiologically, in the bigger picture. I hope for his sake he recovers, and I put him on my team because I think it's possible and if it is he'll score a few hundred points.

Can't believe the season starts today/tomorrow. It's nearly as exciting as putting the CQ team together :D

My TDU riders with a few thoughts

Porte - Had him last year and was going to swerve him until I saw his Aussie schedule, which seems to show a commitment to actually riding a few races. IF he can stay on his bike until the Tour then he's certain to be a good pick and anything after that is a bonus. It's going to be a nervous few months though

Hindley - Assuming he rides the other Aussie races, could be in profit by the end of the month. Showed well towards the end of last year, and will hopefully get a few more chances in his second season with Sunweb

Bauhaus - Will get a lot of races as the main sprinter for Bahrain and good support. Hoping for a couple of respectable placings here to get things going
Bettiol -
Honore - Mainly picked because I was so annoyed at missing Quickstep's neo-pros last year:)

O'Connor - Looked great at Trentino and The Giro before crashing, and presumably now the main GC rider for Dimension Data? Might be supporting Slagter here though, as this seems to be the race he peaks for every year

A few points thanks to Marezcko and Philipsen but I am already kicking myself. All last season I after the TdeY I had Walscheid in my picks list for this year. I thought he looked like a beast in the making. Left him out quite late on. Oh well.

Today there was a 176-kilometer long ¨chequeo¨ in Boyaca, which forms part of the departmental selections for the Nationals later this month/early February!

The course was very undulating - including for example Alto del Moral and finishing on the first 4 kilometers of Alto Palermo cat-1. --- The first 4 km are also the hardest btw, averaging at over 9%.

The race was won by -
1) Rodrigo Contreras (3h:55':17)
2) Diego Ochoa
3) German Chaves

I write this because I think Rodrigo Contreras will be one of the revelations of 2019. Not so much as a winner - but more in terms of being a super, super domestic for Superman Lopez!

His knee-troubles seems behind him now and if you look at his recent photos you see a very fit athlete indeed. Much, much better ¨weight-wise¨ than he has been in the past!

One of the lower-price riders I am the most excited about. The potential has always been there, but even the best athletes can throw away their giving-attributes if undisciplined. And more importantly, this time it seems like Contreras's mindset is on point!

Update #1: Plenty of glory to go around

The first update in the CQ game is always a bit of a jumble, as it is comprised of the Aussie and New Zealand nationals, and pretty much nothing else (a couple of stages of 2.2 Tachira). Aussie riders are pretty popular in this game, so there is often some differentiation at the top. Not so this time. With the unheralded/unpicked trio of Frieberg, Harper and Meyer on the podium of the Aussie RR, there weren't even any rare picks in the big points. That resulted in a bit of a cluster at the top.

This Week's Top Scorers

Rank Team Points
1 flashke 107
1 Googolplex 107
1 just_some_guy 107
1 rote_laterne 107
1 Total Package 107
1 Wallenquist 107

Of the 21 teams who picked Luke Durbridge (who, unsurprisingly, are #1 through 21 on the rankings), six players also got 17 points from being among the 37 teams who picked Ben O'Connor. So, flashke (listed first by virtue of the alphabet), Googolplex, just some guy, rote laterne, Total Package and Wallenquist share first place in this inaugural week.

The Green Jersey competition is back this year - for those new to the game, it's just a weekly points system to reward teams that score high in the weekly rankings - the points are given to the top 15 finishers every week, and mirror the TdF Green Jersey points. The top 6 teams get an average of the top 6 points (45 for first, 35 for 2nd, then 30, 26, 22, 20), which works out to 29.666, which I rounded up to 30. So those are the standings for that competition as of now.

For the top 10 overall, it's those 6 with the asian in 7th (got 14 Callum Scotson points on top of Durbridge), then Carlo Algatrensig, Los Brolin and Tigerion tied for 8th (12 points from Jai Hindley).

This week is bound to be more spread out as the World Tour racing has started down under. We are off in the CQ game! Good luck everyone.

With the first update, I updated the proper tabs on the spreadsheet to also be current (although I just realized I forgot to get rid of the superfluous tabs for teams that no longer participate in the game, lol, so I'll get those for next week). Here are the team popularity rankings:

Thanks for the updates Skidmark. Good to see that there are a dozen teams that are even more eccentric than mine. I'm quite happy at the moment though. I don't think I have ever scored points so early. I will be paying close attention to how much the popularity rankings correlate with the finishing positions this year.

Now that the season is underway with a WT race I need to get back in the habit of looking at/posting my lineup!

Ben O'Connor
Phil Bauhaus
Dan McLay
Alberto Bettiol
Benoit Cosnefroy
Kristoffer Halvorsen

O'Connor was really my only GC hope going in, and that's still the case. Even with Valgren and Slagter on the team, he should finish his usual consistent top 15-20 if all goes to plan. I didn't expect more than 5 points from Bettiol and didn't really think Cosnefroy would do anything (banking more on the Cadel race from him; I haven't kept up with reading about the crash the other day but he was last across the line so I hope that doesn't mean he's really hurt).

The sprinters... Bauhaus looked real good on the first stage, he got cut into the barricades by Walscheid and slowed, then had to brake when Viviani came through, but still held onto third. He was out of position on the second stage but might have had the most speed of anyone at the end. If he keeps it up the results will come. I had hoped for more this year from Halvorsen but he's lost in the mix just like last year so far, and McLay... I dunno. Anyway, fun to start following races again!

No points! Uaarghhhh....
Besides I am starting to be really sorry about composition and late adjustments to my team, f.i. if Pantano will have the same race calendar as Porte, I do worry if he will bring back the investment.
Ahh.. it's just a game ;)

I have Ryan Gibbons on my team. If he manages to surprise again on Willunga Hill he could already exceed his price in just this race. A better sprint today would have made that easier, though. He was in the elite group but somehow only finished 12th...

Very encouraging signs, though, and very, very impressive and surprising that he has turned out to be Dimension Data's best GC rider in this race (they also have Slagter, Valgren, O'Connor and Davies).

That's absurd. Considering Tdu as a stage race at the same level of Paris-Nice,Tirreno-Adriatico,Tour du Romandie,Dauphiné and Tour de Suisse is simply ridiculous.

And what's more ridiculous is that they moved Vuelta al Pais Vasco down to 2nd level. IMO Pais Vasco and Catalunya definitely deserve to be 1st tier more than TDU.
