After an even poorer than expected Paris-Nice and Tirreno, the Belgian races should be better...

Nokere: Stewart, Thijssen, Vanmarcke, Bjerg, Arensman

Bredene: Stewart, Thijssen, Politt, Bjerg, Pidcock

Stewart and Thijssen are two of my rarest picks and should be doing well in weeks like this, although it's pretty clear which of them I expect the most of at this point in the season. The rest shouldn't make a big difference.

San Remo: Covi, Formolo, Naesen, Van Avermaet, Simmons, Sagan, Colbrelli, Sivakov, Bissegger, Bardet

Quantity over quality, I'm afraid.

I need a big turn around, but it isn't looking good.
Nokere: Arensman, Dainese (ack), Garrison, Meeus, Vervloesem, Vermaerke
Nice 4th place from Jordi at least. and 5 DNF's.

Bredene: Dainese (ack), Garrison, Vervloesem

Even worse than Nokere

San Remo: Alaphilippe, Bardet, Pidcock, Sagan
Quality over quantity. Sagans probably not ready but all could top ten.

riders for upcoming races:

Herrada (Jesus)

Lopez (Juan Pedro) (Trek)

Well I have people in races, and just maybe a few who can actually score points.

rare pick Pedersen nicely racking up a few more points today in Belgium.

for MSR, I have a large number of proven classics riders but none of them are WVA, VDP or Alaphilippe but surely (hopefully) at least one or two will get into the top 10...

GVA
Naesen
Colbrelli
Sagan
Bettiol
Higuita
Pidcock
Terpstra
Kristoff
Formolo

I think a lot of us will be very, very relieved to see Sagan finishing fourth at MSR. He can still be a good pick! Bit of shame now though that he's riding Cataluna, instead of going straight into the classics with that form?
I was thinking exactly the same! Maybe not too late to change plans? Anyway, decent score with 287 points today with Sagan scoring 125 of those. Onwards and upwards after a slow start.

Josedin had only Turgis and Pidcock of the top 20, and nearly everyone has made up ground on him. He still has a considerable lead, but it looks a little less intimidating than it was.
Chris is the big mover, Blues and Madrazo may be the more significant ones.

Battle of the forums
CN 763
VR 880

Back up to Belgium for the next 4 events, the pre-Ronde races, starting with De Panne on Wednesday. Until then, browse the numbers at your leisure.

My first attempt to update on CN ground to a halt, the forum software didn't seem to like the embedded tables.
Is this in the right place?

What a week ahead with two stage races and three big classics.

First up, Catalunya

S.Yates - With only one more race scheduled before the Giro, needs to show some consistency, and ideally score a lot of points in what isn't a stellar field

Ciccone - As above

Sagan - After MSR, I almost wish he was skipping this race now from a CQ perspective. Catalunya isn't famed for it's flat stages

Froome and Jungels - No idea where either of them are in terms of form, or what to expect from them here?

Well that was an up-and-down week, will be hard to say how it was because there are so many riders on so many teams in this game that it's difficult to know before the actual update is in the spreadsheet.

T-A was kinda meh, Bernal 4th at least took some points away from other teams and Bardet 8th, but Sivakov and Higuita in particular seem like they're good enough to be a lot higher so that was a disappointing flavour. On the other hand, aside from Bernal not too many teams have the top 6 so I dunno if I lost much relative to other teams.

My highest scorer in Nokere Koerse was Sarreau with 7 points, so... yeah. And Koksijde I had... Leknessund with 7 points. At least he did well in a race he shouldn't have, but moral victories don't get you points.

Then MSR I had a bunch of minor place points, with Colbrelli, Trentin, GvA, Pidcock, Naesen, Laporte and Bardet between 8-27, but those aren't as much as they could have been. But then, my rarest pick Moschetti scores 80 in a new Italian race with a weak field. I think it was a good week?

Starting tomorrow is Catalunya, a race I'm very excited to see back, but where my team is the uninspiring combo of Kruijswijk, Jungels and Froome. At least the classics are here!

I agree that it's great to see it back, plus they are honoring several riders who have had success in their race. (Valverde as the only active rider they are honoring). However, from what I've seen of form this year it appears my best hope is on the shoulders of Jesus Herrada. Those 3 are your entire team? That is more uninspiring than my group of Herrada (Jesus), Cavagna, Froome, Mas (Enric), Valverde, Lopez (Juan Pedro) (Trek), and I wasn't finding this group very inspiring at the moment. On the other hand, if anyone picked Soler he may have some success as he's got decent form and this is his home race.

Thought I had nearly no one for Catalunya, but turns out I actually have 9:oops:
Mainly guys who has not been shining brightly so far this season, so relly not expecting much.
But at least hope to see signs of form for many of them:
SAGAN Peter
THOMAS Geraint
JUNGELS Bob
HIRT Jan
KRUIJSWIJK Steven
PRONSKIY Vadim
GALLOPIN Tony
FROOME Chris
ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo

Thanks to Stuyven I think my last week was somewhat ok. Stewart-Jorgenson duo has already brought more points than expected. Happy about that.

Catalunya :

SAGAN Peter
MEEUS Jordi
JUNGELS Bob
ARENSMAN Thymen
KRUIJSWIJK Steven
HIRSCHI Marc
THOMAS Geraint
HAMILTON Lucas
FROOME Chris
YATES Simon

It's always a good week when your team is mentioned in the update. Now it's on Gaudu/McNulty/Kruijswijk/Latour to maintain the momentum in Paris-Nice. Higuita/Pinot/Bernal/Bardet/Sivakov on deck for the Tirreno GC. It's going to feel so weird going back to anxiously waiting for the result of middling sprinting prospects in some random french cup race next year.
Well that went about as poorly as it could have.

Didn't get anything from MSR either.

But I'm not here to take about my team's failures. My only unique pick Andreas Lorentz Kron has won the first stage of Catalunya. Today I'm going to pretend like I was super confident in that pick and saw a really promising future in him. Next time he disappoints me it's back to the truth and by that I mean he's the last rider to make the cut and even then it's only because I decided to pick a bunch of young riders (I figured that you could get pretty much two years worth of development instead of one since the young riders’ breakouts had been put on hold last year) and there weren't that many 22 year olds that had proven they could score at the pro level during the covid shortened season.

In this week of nearly a new race every day, next up is Coppi e Bartali tomorrow

Mostly, I'm glad to see Moscon back, even if his classics season has probably gone. And Rivera finally starts his campaign proper.

Vansevant v Vandenabeele v Van Wilder. Could have picked any one of the three for my CQ team, but there's no way I was going to bother writing the middle one more than once, and the third is that Ryan Reynold's film. So I'll be rooting for Mauri to continue his dominance of the Belgian Van Neo-pro Cup

Update #8: Another week, another 1000 points

pardon the update being a bit later this week, it's been a busy one! Just like it was a busy week on the scoresheets of many of the teams of this CQ game. It's my believe that the pandemic-shortened season in 2020 has made it so that game participants could talk themselves into almost any rider this side of Primoz Roglic as a good deal. I think it's perhaps easier to convince yourself to take a rider you really like but is a bit more expensive if that rider still only costs 500 points. If you're comparing a 500 pointer you like to a 300 pointer you like a bit less, it's easier to justify that than, say, if that rider was 1000 points and you were comparing him to a 600 pointer. With the CQ game total remaining at 7500, this has led to some diverse teams, and it also means that there are enough good riders that aren't completely off-limits for teams that no matter which rider wins the big race of the week, it's likely some people are going to have him.

It's sheerly a coincidence that I used 500 points for illustrative purposes, but it fits well enough the profile of Jasper Stuyven. Costing 502 points and with scores from 850-1250 for the last three full seasons, he's not an eye-catchingly good deal, but you could talk yourself into it. And if you did, you snagged a cool 280 points this week for his monument win! Those riders with Van Aert (5 teams) won't be too disappointed with the 'loss', as he snagged even more (430 points). And hey, why don't you pick van der Poel (9 teams) or Pogacar (2 teams) while you're at it? Cycling's biggest names coming off big seasons are still being picked, and the points they bring are truly a haul.

Teams have flirted with the 1000 point barrier in recent weeks, and the combo of T-A, MSR and a flurry of smaller races broke that barrier this week. Boris98 returns to the top of the charts after a torrid first few weeks and then a slowdown; aside from Stuyven's 280 points, Boris had four other riders cracking triple digits. The mildly popular Tim Wellens (105, 18 teams), the wildly popular Egan Bernal (136, everyone pretty much), and then exactly 100 from Bardet and Michael Matthews (didn't have a particularly bad year last year, but at 639 cost that was good enough for 23 teams). Sorry Sonny Colbrelli, your 80 points are only good enough for a mention this low down the list, and heaven forbid you scored less than that, you're not even worth a mention on this update. tom jelte gets second, and with a lineup of Van Aert, van der Poel and Sagan (as well as Bernal as a top scorer this week), their team might feature in a number of weekly updates in weeks those 3 are racing. LosBrolin doesn't quite crack a grand but gets third on the week with Stuyven, Bernal and Sagan leading the way and some strong supporting points across the board.

Boris98 finishes just out of the top 5 here, so the next two from the other rankings take over the top two spots here, both with jumps of over 20 spots. 18-Valve.(pithy) manages third here, as one of the 2 owners of Pogacar, as well as having Sagan and Bernal scoring big this week.

Boris98's team nabbed 4th on the first week of the CQ game, finished in a 3-way tie for 1st the next week, and then underwent a drought until this week, with 45 points for the win returning them to the top of this ranking. No other teams in the top 5 score this week.

And Boris' big week comes with a big result in the overall! Even though they almost made the top 5 high movers of the week, they were already placed quite high, moving up from 18th to 3rd overall! Otoxiep87 loses 96 points to Northerner on the week but still has a pretty healthy lead (although is 370 points really that healthy in a game where top teams are scoring 1000ish every week?), and those two keep the top two spots. Apart from Boris, Bicycle Boy does a big leap into the top 10 (and top 4), Squire and Total Package move into the top 10, while SafeBet, MADRAZO, Fivezzz and Jon Ezeitza fall out.

This week the fun continues, with Catalunya and Coppi e Bartali already underway with none of the biggest phenoms of cycling present, making them seem fairly wide open to my eyes (although Mauri Vansevenant is probably going to get a bunch more points from Italy). And then, we've got De Panne Wednesday, E3 Friday (welcome back!) and Gent Wevelgem Sunday. Classics season is truly underway!
