The 2023 CQ Ranking Manager Thread

Page 15 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
I want to give so many likes and head-ups. Enjoy this thread very much so far, it's very interesting to read all your thoughts and accounts and I'd love to react to so many of them but can't find the time before the discussion has already moved on. :tearsofjoy:
I think we are all going to have some fun following the season with the game in mind, not just for our teams but also to see in general how the different approaches and expectations will play out.
And to think that the first update will come soon! (With no points for me, I think.)
Thank you very much skidmark. It's very hard to thank you enough for how much energy you are putting into running this smoothly.

Okay another little update before the Update: I updated the "Rank Popularity" tab, which tallies popularity scores for each participant in the game. That is, the score is based on the cumulative popularity scores of all the riders on your team.

Here's a paste of the rankings; if you've been following this game for years, the teams at the top should not be much of a surprise... I am definitely guilty of liking the popular kids (ie riders)! At the bottom, Basque Street Boys has a score of 48, which may be the lowest score (ie most unique team) in the history of this game.

The game has barely started, and my team has already made history. It almost makes up for the injustice of Tarik Chaoufi not being selected to ride Tropicale Amissa Bongo for Morocco. Have they completely forgotten that he once "beat" peak Voeckler there in a sprint?

Update #1: chow down on the first points of the season

My gosh! The game has just kicked off, and we already have our first update. And there's basically one race driving the points - the Aussie nationals road race. (sidenote: the 2.2 Giro del Sol San Juan has also taken place, and I believe v1lat was the only team with a scoring rider in it)

This is the first update, I believe, that has not included both the road race and the time trial, but it's an odd calendar setup and CQ decided to just go with the Monday update. So the 40% of the field (41/103 teams) that scored at least five points have something to be excited about in this update.

This Week's Top Scorers

Former game winner bminchow gets off to a hot start - obviously Luke Plapp (13 teams) and his 100 points for the successful defense of his title was necessary to win, but not sufficient. bminchow also picked up 20 points from Lucas Hamilton (also 13 teams) and 6 from Matthew Dinham (5 teams). Jakob747 gets a clean second with Plapp and Dinham, and a handful of Plapp/Ewan teams tie for third.

As this is the first week, there are no high movers, as all teams started equal. But there were points in the...

For those of you who are new or need a refresher: there's a supplementary competition in this game, similar to the Grand Tour tradition of a GC and sub-competitions. This competition awards points based on weekly wins (comparable to stage wins in a GT). It uses the points scale that the TdF used in the mid-2010s, which goes 45-35-30-26-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2 for the top 15 finishers. When teams are tied, I just give the average of the sum of the scores for the tied places, which is why you see decimals in the above list.

Anyway, EITB explained in more detail upthread if you're interested - suffice to say we'll be tracking this all season as well, and for this week of course it mirrors the GC.

Again, this list is the same as the top scorers, as it's only the first week. Due to ties with Plapp-only teams, there are 13 teams in the top 10 this week. I'm not sure if next week will shake things out any more clearly with probably just the ITT giving points, but things will shake out and look more normal quickly. For now, we're off the mark!

spreadsheet at dropbox

note: I've updated the "Rankings" and "Update" tabs, as well as the Green Jersey, Popularity, Rank Popularity tabs, etc. I still have to reformat and update the Week&Month tab, and hide tabs of teams that aren't playing this year, and a bit more work. But we're mostly into 2023 on the spreadsheet.

Thanks for the update, skidmark! Splitting the Aussie champs into two updates is good for the green jersey hopes of us aussiephiles. :sunglasses:

I can see three Vine+Plapp teams (the leader bminchow, Jakob747 and zaka_fan). They're looking good for next update. And the one Vine+O'Brien team looks even better!

Another random thought I had: Could the popularity of Ayuso and Roglic mean we'll have another massive end-of-Vuelta week this year?

Probably not record-breaking, as Object had the perfect storm last year with 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 10th, 15th, 17th and 19th in the Vuelta, Tour of Britain runner-up, a 1.Pro winner and a 3rd in Montreal. With neither the Canadian races nor Tour of Britain overlapping this time, that's gonna be near impossible to beat. But we do have the 2.Pro Tour of Taihu lake (although it's unlikely to feature too many CQ picks), the 1.Pro races GP Wallonie, Coppa Sabatini and Primus Classic, the 2.1 Tour of Slovakia and five Italian, Belgian or French 1.1 races. I was imagining something like a Vuelta podium consisting of Roglic, Ayuso and then maybe Haig, Uijtdebroeks, Almeida, Martinez and perhaps even Bernal somewhere in the top 10.

My line-up for the TDU and most likely Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. It looks good on paper, but the question is how many of them are there to be competitive or just get some miles. Plapp seems to be in good shape and will hopefully ride for GC. Some others should be more than capable as well to score points, if they are in good form. We will see.

As of now it only looks like it will be Bernal and Hermans for me at Vuelta San Juan, that starts a little bit later, but still time for someone else to be added there.

Here's my team for TDU
HONORE Mikkel Frølich
SCHACHMANN Maximilian
CATTANEO Mattia
HAYTER Leo
THOMPSON Reuben
PITHIE Laurence
BAUDIN Alex
DINHAM Matthew
FISHER-BLACK Finn
SVRCEK Martin

Let's see. But I really don't expect anything.

Dinham looks like a really punchy little climber. He almost matched Plapp's acceleration uphill on the last lap, he just fell something like 5 seconds short and started grabbing his leg like he was crapping up.

He wrote online - Wasn’t on my best day but glad I could be there to support Chris to a great 6th place.

I wonder how Dinham will go in Tour Down Under. I guess it depends on how someone like P. Bevin is doing form-wise.

That’s quite a few people who could potentially do a GC and there are stage points in this team as well. No idea what to expect though, not only is it the first race of the season, but the only rider in this lineup who has ever started this race is Honoré and he didn’t finish. My highest hopes are obviously for Plapp, who has a real shot at taking the overall.

Ok. let me try this again and see if i can defend the team I submitted. First of all, my strategy to have multiple australians + Simon Yates may pay off in the form of some early green points. Nice to get a little lead there.

I had four riders in green on my spreadsheet, meaning they were going to be on any roster I submitted. So probably dont need rationale there as they are on the top 10 popularity list.
ALAPHILIPPE Julian
SCHACHMANN Maximilian
MOSCON Gianni
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley

I tried twice to get a roster with Roglic, but just felt like i was missing out on some good value with other riders. I will likely regret that. So I sent in a roster with Almeida as my lead rider. I thought i was all set. But then I looked at it a little more and i thought, Almeida and Simon Yates probably have similar prospects for the year. So lets go with the cheaper one. This made me have to change a few things on my roster. The riders that ended up getting dropped were:
ANDERSEN Søren Kragh (replaced by Kelderman)
VAN DIJKE Mick (replaced by Honore)
BARONCINI Filippo (That one could hurt)
MIHOLJEVIC Fran
GREGOIRE Romain (That one could REALLY hurt)
Starling James (Kept leaonard over him just to be contrarian)

So the other team members are:
YATES Simon (Because he didnt finish either GT in 2022, he is the main leader on the team, and did get 2000 points 5 years ago)
PIDCOCK Thomas (he was actually on every roster I tried to build also. Just a lot being said about TdF and focusing more on the road cycling)
JOHANNESSEN Tobias Halland (yes he is expensive, but I think he has the talent to keep improving for the one week races and maybe even in the TdF, since Uno-X is in)
PLAPP Lucas (Just so talented, and should get off to a good start, which he did)
VINE Jay (Admittedly a risk pick with his new team and potential to be Sepp Kuss 2 in the TdF. Not a lot of experience in the peleton, but an excellent climber still. And apparently not too bad in the TTs either)
WRIGHT Fred (Another risky pick. But i could not watch his racing last year and feel that he should be given more lead opportunities. Maybe he'll be on the same points but maybe he can double them with that talent)
TURNER Benjamin (Not sure why. Last year I felt like i picked the wrong Ben from Ineos. Kept hearing about how great he was. So this year I just put him in automatically thinking hewas an obvious pick, without actually researching him at all. Maybe his low popularity ends up in my favor)
HAIG Jack (Still in his prime. Still a GT leader. Bad luck last year so why not at that value. I need somebody in the TdF.
KELDERMAN Wilco (Yes he is a domestique for Primoz, but still has the talent to top 10 himself in a GT, plus maybe a few other races. And I've always been a big fan).
HONORE Mikkel Frølich (Probably not as good without QS, but should be the lead protected rider. And I also had him orange on my spreadsheet (meaning some injury or covid issue last year. Although I couldnt tell you what or for how long he was out). Plus i am an EFE fan and cant pick Uran.
ASGREEN Kasper (Didnt research him at all. Just figured he's still talented and could sneak in a big win during the year to cover last years points and then some)
UIJTDEBROEKS Cian (I think the talk of him in GTs is too early. But Lantern Rouge loves him and i had fear of missing out. Maybe too expensive for 2023.
SIMMONS Quinn (i dont know. American, but I dont really like him. But showed a lot last year without many points. So he could certainly double his points)
Van Wilder Ilan (Slowly improving year to year. I think he takes another step up)
MIHKELS Madis (Never heard of him but people are saying he is a good young sprinter. Maybe he gets some DeLie like points this year)
VAN UDEN Casper (Liked the results that I saw last year and he should get some good opportunities at DSM)
HAMILTON Lucas (Cant be any worse. And sounds like he hasnt given up yet)
CARR Simon (EFE and one good stage win could get him to exceed last years points. He can climb with the breakaway. i think. Cant he?)
BRENNER Marco (Had him every year and he is still young. Nothing so far to say his talent was overestimated)
VANDENABEELE Henri (okay, I like predicting which DSM guys will be their next star)
GLOAG Thomas (I heard he was good. Opportunities at Jumbo? We'll see)
DINHAM Matthew (Didnt really research it. Just thought an Ausie for early season points)
BOL Cees (Only 57points. Was hoping for a ProConti race schedule instead of Cavendish leadout)
SCHELLING Ide (I know he had bad luck and issues last year. So he has to be better. 300 points maybe?)
RICCITELLO Matthew (probably a year or two early but I thought maybe some Avenir points)
STEINHAUSER Georg (Another EFEwho is greatly talented. Sometimes it just takes a couple years to get comfortable in the pros and to reach that next level. i think he is a steal at this point)
PEDERSEN Casper Phillip (Yea, he's going to get so many opportunities. And he is orange on my spreadsheet)
DEKKER David (Did not deliver at all for Jumbo. But he is doing the spanish island races and Tour of Oman. Lots of chances to score some points already for Arkea)
LEONARD Michael (just needed a zero pointer. Took him over Tarling, Christen and Romeo)

So there you have it from a former game winner (yes it was all luck in 2020 with Covid reaking havoc on the teams. but i'll take that honor to my grave). My normal strategy of too many Giro riders and not much else has changed. Chasing some classic and one day race victories this year.

Oh I forgot to list my TdU riders:
YATES Simon (7)
PLAPP Lucas (13)
VINE Jay (7)
HONORE Mikkel Frølich (39)
SCHACHMANN Maximilian (84)
HAMILTON Lucas (13)
DINHAM Matthew (5)
MOSCON Gianni (68)

I have no confidence at all in Total Energies ability to control every stage so I'm not sure Tesson is a real threat for the GC. Vercher is my rarest rider and he'll also be there so I'll be very invested in that race. None of my top riders are riding anywhere in January apparently so it would be nice to not to drop too far back in the rankings in the meantime.

It will also be interesting to see how much room for progression Jason Tesson has.

He comes from a cycling family. His grandfather Rene was president of GPC Angevin for many years and Jason has been cycling all his life. Even in his best years as an amateur he´s never was a winning machine (2020 = 3 Wins - 2019 = 2 wins - 2018 = 1 win). However, he did win the French Championships (Amateur) and the Vélo d'Or in 2020,

He´s a light dude around 59 kgs so besides his speed, he should in therory also go uphill well for a sprinter. I found this quate from 2021 by his then Team Manager S: Javalet - « Toutes proportions gardées, c’est un petit Caleb Ewan. très explosif »., le cajole Stéphane Javalet, manager de St-Michel Auber 93, qui ne s’y était pas trompé en le pistant pendant 2 ans.

TotalEnergies has great material thanks to the arrival of Sagan last year - and as Squire also mentioned Tesson will have a lead-out around him this year with Lorenzo Manzin being key, so that will be interesting to see how plays out.

He should be a good professional. CQ points-wise I hope something along the line of H. Hofstetter. Potential-wise, in my opinion, someone like Axel Laurance outsines him pretty clearly though.
