Update #8: Ayuso makes you so good this week

(ugh that's a real strained pun this week. sorrynotsorry, really trying to compete for a distinct flair with this new website tracking the game now, I guess)

The season is fully underway with the overlapping marquee races (cycling is so wonderful and dumb) of Paris-Nice and Tirenno-Adriatico. And while things went mostly as expected with Jonas Vingegaard dominating in Italy and, uhhh, Matteo Jorgenson beating Evenepoel, Roglic and the rest in France, lots of high placings for well-picked riders in this game meant a dozen teams broke the thousand point mark this week. But one rider in particular split things in to haves and have nots this week.

This Week's Top Scorers

RankTeamPoints this week
1MADRAZO1164
2repre1148
3skidmark1125
4Anderis1082
5Total Package1053

It was quite close at the top this week, but MADRAZO came out on top with an impressive crew of point scorers. Chief among them, of course, was Juan Ayuso, who somehow got 385 points out of Tirenno-Adriatico despite not winning. But 2nd in the overall, as well as 2nd in two stages, both classfications, plus a stage win and 3 days in the leader's jersey, all goes a long way. It's no surprise that all the teams that scored over 1000 this week were among the 39 that had him. Beyond that, MADRAZO had very impressive weeks from Luke Plapp (167, 40), Isaac Del Toro (166, 47), Thymen Arensman (116, 64), Egan Bernal (106, 43), Cian Uijtdebroeks (103, 40) and - importantly for the win this week - Enric Mas (54, 14).

repre ended up 2nd in the ranking, scoring 1148 from the exact same group of 6 100+ scorers, the difference being in the minor points - their team's next highest scorer was Sheffield (34, 22) rather than Mas. Team skidmark was in a similar boat and ended up in 3rd, with the big 6 but just a bit less in the minor points.

This Week's High Movers

RankTeamUp/down
1Crevaison(+24)
2Anderis(+20)
3triley36(+18)
4Object(+17)
5Rufs(+15)

It's a very different list at the top here, with Crevaison taking the top spot for a 24 spot jump in the overall standings. Their team had 4 of the 'big 6' owned by the top 3 scorers in the week, missing Bernal and Plapp, but was one of the 9 to have Jonathan Milan, who brought in an impressive-for-non-GC 197 points. Anderis is the only team in the top 5 of both rankings this week with the big 6, and triley36 converts 1016 points on the week to an 18 spot jump.

Green Jersey Competition

RankTeamTotal
1shalgo152
2Jakob747120
3repre104
4skidmark80
4Shakes80

Some moves in this ranking - the top 2 are the same, but shalgo increases the lead by 14 points over Jakob747. repre and skidmark's teams transfer their 35 and 30 points this week into top 5 overall positions in this competition.

Top 10 Overall

RankUp/downTeamPoints
1(-)shalgo4561
2(+4)repre3957
3(+2)skidmark3956
4(-2)Squire3756
5(+3)Salvarani3627
5(+11)MADRAZO3627
7(+2)Lortnoc3582
8(-4)Jakob7473537
9(+9)JPettersen3498
10(+2)oliveira3473

Some shakeup here, of course, as this was the biggest week of the season - 8 of the top 10 teams were in the top 15 on the week as well. (shoutout to Squire and Jakob747, holding in there in the top 10 without Ayuso)

shalgo continues to consolidate the lead, which grows to over 600 points, while repre and skidmark are separated by a much smaller margin - a single point- in 2nd and 3rd. MADRAZO, JPettersen and oliveira move into the top 10 at the expense of DJ Sprtsch, Gotland and JumboVismaFan, who fall out.

Following up this stage race heavy week is a one-day race heavy week. The 1.Pro races are lined up for the week, including Nokere Koerse, Milano-Torino, Denain and Koksijde, leading up to the main course of the first monument of the season in Milan San Remo.

Do we get a DQ if we choose a team that has too many points by the end of the year? Or will this be based on points the riders have at the end of March?
Yeah good question - the suggestion was mostly a joke but it actually would be pretty fun when I think about it! Couldn't do it with a points budget like this game, it'd have to be something else, like raw points gained over the total at the end of this year or something - you could have negative scores!

Thanks for the update! The worse pun the better! :D For me, getting my weekly CQ game fix through these updates are still my preferred way of keeping myself updated on the game, so no need to feel threatened by the website (which is a great addition for those who want to follow things in real-time I guess).

Expected to lose way more positions than I did this week, so I gotta be happy with holding on to a 4th place. I want a big week from my guys now that Ayuso is chilling for a bit.

Doesn't matter. Nobody's catching shalgo this year. Their team was at 3500 points at the start of the week and it will add like another 1k between Ayuso, Del Toro, Plapp, Bernal and Arensman.

The most points anybody has ever had in the post-MSR update is 3939. Shalgo will smash that with a week to spare. GG, see you next year.
It's a long year still! Just had a sec to look at the teams and at least for me, I have 13 of shalgo's top 15 riders, the exceptions being Fisher-Black and Cosnefroy. I don't want to simplify too much, but if the two riders I have with the most potential that shalgo lacks - that is, Uijtdebroeks and Rodriguez - live up to their potential, I can see them getting 600 more points than those two by the end of the year. Of course, then I'd have to have guys like Foss and Rafferty do better than an underperforming-so-far Higuita for shalgo... anyway, not impossible!

Website is not a competition! It's only doing the quantitative work, making your life (and others easier). If desired I can also automatically have a file created with the main tables on a weekly basis so there is a static base for such reports to be based on. Can also have a date selector or something. This Qualitative part of yours adds more to the game then just tables, but those tables should save you time (I hope) and should be working - as they are now - automatically going forward.

I like website, but I like the normal spreadsheet that skidmarks posts that has the riders in order from how much they cost when you selected them. The 2024 results vs the 2023 results. They remain static and I like that, especially when comparing and looking at other teams as well.

On the website the riders are a bit all over the place (in my opinion), since it takes the current score and sort them in that order.

Also, I like the updates.

Both worlds can hopefully work together.

But squire won't and we'll all get so much schadenfreude from reading the messages about how their team can't compete with the Pogacar squads (while he proceeds to finish top 5 as usual).
That was my exact thinking when I read the Pogacar banter! :tearsofjoy: Except that I won't expect to finish top 5 against a revived Pogacar in such a scenario. I don't have great history fighting against rampant Slovenians.

Oh yes, tongue was firmly in cheek with that comment! I very much appreciate and welcome the website, it's great. Honestly it is really helpful, as it's a bit of pressure to have people depend on the updates not only for descriptive verbal color but also the main results. With the website, I know people who are jonesing for some quantitative info can get it, and I won't feel so bad if I can't write up a descriptive update until Tuesday or Wednesday or something. Very much complementary, thanks!

Wauw. Bettiol doing his best Pogacar impersonation, Christen 2nd, Wandahl even showing himself with a top 10 in Italy, and then Fabio finally getting decent points in Belgium where Baroncini and even Hayter showed signs of life. What a day.

Interesting week with a lot of points to get even for outsider picks..

Now is the time, when my sprinters (Bennett (Denain, Loire Atlantique, Cholet Agglo), Ackermann (yesterday 4th and is scheduled for Koksijde) and even Andresen (Koksijde first race, where he doesn´t have to lead-out Jakobsen) could score.

And Lamperti added to Milan-Sanremo instead of semiclassics gonna cost me points

I could really do with Sammy B snagging some podiums in these races.

So, yeah... I'd hoped Lund would be allowed to sprint today.
Unfortunately, he had to do leadout for Liepins.

However, Søjberg did get me two points in the Youngster Coast Challenge, so, yay!

And I think Wallin also got me some points in Koksijde...

Yes, really don't know what he did wrong last year and what happened during the winter, that he even in the one race where Jakobsen doesn't ride, he also isn't allowed to go for his own chance.. what a waste..

Lets not forget its the team that made Dainese leadout Mayrhofer all the time..

They are quite simple either complete tactical idiots or its just some personal thing again.

When I picked Lund too I was a bit afraid he would leadout Jakobsen also, but thought for sure they would also let a big talent like him get his own chance a lot, just like Jakobsen would likely be dropped in a lot of races, but I had never ever imagined they would have him leadout a slowmotionsprinter like Liepins. That is just absurd. But I guess it was a big mistake not to factor in the DSM factor.

He wasn't even lead-out, but 4th last man, pulling over with 1.4 km to go. I think he was done, as it was a quite weak turn on the front.
