Update #2: Jakob747 just Strong enough to hold off Pithie performance on nbfc1962's team

Racing continued in Australia and kicked off fully in Europe this week, with the Cadel race the biggest point-getter on offer, but the Mallorca races offering a number of opportunities. That meant the best teams had to get support from a variety of riders.

Jakob747 takes the week by a single point from game newbie nbfc1962, coming right down to the wire. Jakob747 eked out the victory due to strength in number; their team had no fewer than 7 riders clearing 35 points on the week. Leading the charge was Corbin Strong (118 points, 3 teams), who didn't get a victory but made a chunk of his 586 cost back early in the year. Lennert Van Eetvelt (105, 10) also got almost 25% of his value back with good performances in Mallorca, and the likes of Tobias Johannessen (56, 7), Kevin Vauquelin (40, 5), Luke Lamperti (40, 39), Egan Bernal (38, 43) and Pierre Gautherat (36, 4) pushed Jakob over the line.

nbfc1962 had a more top-heavy team contributing to their impressive week, with first-time winner Laurence Pithie (212, 2), Alexander Vlasov (136, 2) and Van Eetvelt making up the bulk of the 495 points. escartin lands in third a little ways back thanks to the likes of Girmay (89, 48), Magnier (80, 21) and Dainese (76, 3) leading the way.

Note: normally I have the High Movers ranking every week, but something is not working with the spreadsheet formulas. I'll have to tweak it when I have a second and update later, but I just didn't want to delay this update any more.

Last week's winner HoudiniCycling lands in 14th this week, which gives their team 4 points in this competition. Jakob's 45 points for the win are good for 2nd overall, while the two weekly runners-up tie for third.

With a top 15 this week to add to the big win last week, HoudiniCycling remains in first place, with a 141 point lead over armchairclimber in 2nd, and 14 more to Jakob747 in third. Those three are the only teams with over 1000 points so far, which is a reminder that it's very early going!

This week, even more riders get their seasons underway, with three stage races happening in Saudi Arabia (2.1 Saudi Tour), France (2.1 Etoile de Besseges) and Spain (2.Pro Valenciana race).

Same here. Van Uden, Van Eetvelt. Last year's team can't stop winning.

Let's see if my season can get going at Besseges

Vauquelin
Thomas
Gachignard
Segaert
Laurance

Mainly hoping the first two can continue picking up points in the early French calendar, before the WT begins.

@skidmark You probably didn't see the comment I did a few days ago since I missed tagging you in it. Michael Valgren has a new name on CQrankings. Instead of VALGREN HUNDAHL (ANDERSEN) Michael he is now only VALGREN HUNDAHL Michael so his points are not showing in the results table.

It impacts the overall standing in that DJ Sprtsch is actually 4th ahead of repre because of the 5 points that Valgren scored.

And also some green jersey implications as it will shuffle the lower end of the top 10 of the week.

They have similarly removed Lasse Norman Leth's bracketed bachelor name, but that's not relevant to the game. If they reformat all the names on the women's side of the site by removing former surnames I'll have to be alert in that game.

Hmmm, 36th. I expected lower considering the fact that some fairly popular riders like Magnier, Girmay and Lamperti scored big recently and none of my riders scored big points after TdU. I guess I was saved by having 4 Colombians who scored at NCs.

For once, a stage/race cancellation is actually an advantage for me. The only possible outcome for my riders (Rafferty, Segaert and Vergallito) in the first stage of Besseges was to potentially lose time ahead of the time trial. Now there's one less day for the punchy guys to gain bonuses/time.

Big contrast to last year, where the Antalya cancellation probably cost me in the hundreds, as I had at least three riders who could have been near the front of what was a weak field.

The good week for me continued in Valencia with Piganzoli finishing comfortably with the main favourites (didn't expect anything from Christen in this race anyway). And I guess I can live with Van Uden dropping those 6 leader jersey points on countback in Saudi.

Wasn’t expecting a great return this week but that was quite painful to go from 2nd in the weekly ranking to 88th this week. Considering how lean it was still being 14th overall is very good. Lamperti not getting to sprint on Sunday in Majorca cost me my best chance to score significant points.

Not a lot going on this week and my team will be heavily dependent on their captain Wout Van Aert coming out firing in Algarve in 2 weeks time.

@skidmark, more namechanging:

Vingegaard is now VINGEGAARD HANSEN Jonas

Or was that already mentioned? I dunno... my memory is exactly as wonky has it has always been.

Weird that they've already changed that, considering it seemed to be a quite recent change in the UCI database. The Fisher-Blacks have not had their names changed in the CQ database yet, for instance, but I guess a two time Tour de France winner gets a bit more attention.

I get the impression that they are responsive to suggestions/requests, and rarely take initiative on it. If someone has e-mailed them about Vingegaard, and they see that it checks out, they swap it: if no-one has emailed them about the Fisher-Blacks, they either haven't noticed or assume that no-one is bothered.
My only evidence for the supposition is that they changed Emma Norsgaard very rapidly after RhD started nagging them about that.

I have experience with a Danish rider getting in touch directly to request surname changes for a results site.

I think I once heard a story about one of the "minor Danes" - might have been Stokbro - who got a bit annoyed because sometimes he would be listed as "Stokbro", other times as "Nielsen", so basically on the result site in question he was two people, each with half as many results as he actually had.
