I know--this shows his devotion to this competition. Despite 16 top tens, he has only one podium (and that was third place). He doesn't want to win a race by mistake.

His previous race, the Tour de Kumano, would have given him 4 more top tens (out of a possible 5!) but alas will not count as it was a .2 race.

In some way, it's a pitty that Philipsen already won a race early in the season (when Ewan was DQF in TDU), because otherwise he'd be a real contender here. Already 16 top 10 spots not counting points or general classifications (those would add another 7 to his tally)

This race lost it's fear factor when Contador won the Angliru in 2017. No CN fave is ever winning this
