Another 'what could have been'

After Roglic crashing out of the Vuelta to boot...

This really is the most frustrating thing about this sport. Is there any other sport where hyped contests get so often ruined by crashes and illnesses?

Since the biggest races (GTs) take place on multiple days, those things happening just bother more than in the shorter events.

Of course cycling has classics but it would have still been a different of losing top rider in the early part of GT than Boonen vs. Cancellara at Roubaix being destroyed due to crash before any of the cobbles.

Paul Kochli was the DS, from Switzerland

He tried to get Lemond to attack to Luz Ardiden, but Greg wouldn't. Greg wanted to work with Roche when Hinault was only about 1:15 behind on the stage (Greg should have followed Delgado). Finally on the ADH stage the next year, he had to scream at Lemond that if he wants to win the tour, he needs to drop Zimmerman and attack.

Greg was too passive, which is why I think had they been on opposite teams, Hinault wins fairly easily.
Old topic, but nothing exciting happening. Hinault is one of my all time favorites, but if he and LeMond had been on different teams, there was no way he would’ve had a 5 minute lead in the mountains to begin with. Even if LeMond remained passive despite being on separate teams, he wouldn’t be riding for some ADR squad who were incapable of controlling a race in the mountains. He probably would’ve been at Systeme U, and they were plenty strong to chase down anyone and control the race with doms like Boyer and Mottet and Fignon out of the picture. Had he gone to Panasonic, he would’ve had Miller and Anderson. Has he been with Z-Peugeot, he would’ve had Pensec, Sean Yates, and Dag Otto Lauritzen.

The only way Hinault takes a 5 minute lead that day was due to the fact that La Vie Claire was so ridiculously strong and weren’t going to chase him. Plus, if LeMond wasn’t on La Vie Claire, then two of their strongest riders would’ve been on whatever team LeMond was on or riding for 7-Eleven since they were signed on LeMond’s recommendation (Hampsten and Bauer).

However, Lemond also would not have gained 2 minutes on the Massif Central Stage because HInault was holding up the peloton to secure Greg's #2 overall. Hinault also likely does not break his nose
