Around half a decade now, we have all sorts of jokers in this thread, beginning of the season, then it settles down.

Rogla is rather consistent in results through the whole season and on the raise on where youngsters might turn out to be one hit wonders, season vice. So i would advice caution in terms of making premature conclusions.

TTs are not big races, a small niche of fans care about that.

someone clearly still hasn't gotten over it.

Of course a Remco fan would disagree with me. It's the only type of race where he still is relevant.
Is Michael Rodgers a big name of cycling? Or Tony Martin? No

race of truth in cycling, forever and ever, no matter what Gouvenou does.

and not a silly remco fan, since I just put him 4th in the Big Five hierarchy. Imagine a poster here who actually sees reality.

and LOL at Martin and Rodgers, did they win a GT, LBL and the Olympics double?

Remco 36th all time at age 26 despite all the set backs. Hardly a one-trick pony.

Exactly my point. Remco is much more than a TT rider and for that reason he will end his career as a generational rider.
TTs never were important races and for that reason Tony and Michael are hardly remembered.

Tony Martin is definitely a big name. He's up there with the specialists of his era, like Kittel etc.

Mick Rogers doesn't really come close to Martin. The best time triallists of his generation didn't care about the World TT, it wasn't a proper contest. By Martin's time it was (hence him winning several Tour stages too).

Pre-2005ish, the big TTers were also GC guys – Indurain, Anquetil, Ullrich, Rominger, Moser, Armstrong, etc. But we remember them for their TT ability as well as their overall strength.

It is what I said, TTs never were important races per se.

No I disagree. They were important races, you just didn't have 'specialists' (maybe also because TTs were hillier, so the rider they suited was heavier GC). That changed around 2005 with the rise of Cancellara and then Martin.

A specialist TTer like Martin nowadays is akin to an elite specialist sprinter. A big name IMO

It's not a question if you agree or not. TTs are not important per si, their value depends mostly on the gc battle (stage races). Every epic TT happened due to a GC battle. Lemond vs Fignon, Contador vs Schleck, Pogacar vs Roglic.
For example last year in Kigali, the race was pretty underwhelming for entertainment. Remco finished the race in the first checkpoint. The only WTF moment was when he caught Pogacar but the race was meh in general.

Mountain stages are not important per se, their value depends on the gc battle (stage races).

Mountain stages are not important races and so people like Van Impe, Virenque are not relevant or big names.

Good answer but mountain stages generates more money and bring more audience than TTs (by far).
