Last night all the Giro riders had supper at a restaurant with Zomegnan. He then got together with Contador, Nibali, Millar and others and showed a video of the safety precautions on the Monte Crostis descent.

Tuttobiciweb just posted exclusive photos of the precautions. It says "video" in the title, but they might still be adding that.

Interesting, some of that stuff is net, some of it is plastic fence material.
Man. Have you guys ever slammed into that stuff at speed? Lots of fun, a little plastic road rash. :)

It's a good safety precaution, but it doesn't always stop you. Double layers would probably be a good idea for really obvious critical spots - the only problem is, sometimes they're only obvious in hindsight.

Let's hope nobody goes all Hermann Maier on the descent

i have ridden passo pura from both sides, and the ampezzo side is harder. sella razzo is in my experience a difficult climb if you start from the piave because it is very difficult to find a good tempo because the slopes are very inconstant.
imho, plan b is harder because there more km of climbing. the crostis is hard, but it is less than 10km.

with plan b , they are going to spend more time on the saddle. that makes a big difference.

anyway, apart from some crazy south american attacker, in both hypothesis they will wait until the zoncolan to do anything. things have always gone like that with the zoncolan: riders are too afraid to blow up in the last terrible climb.
Climbed Monte Crostis from Comeglians a couple of weeks ago: 13.5km gaining 1412 meters at median gradient 10.4%, max 18%.

Agreed, riders will hold back on Crostis anticipating Zoncolan. The ride down from Lienz isn't too bad so they should be in good form on the final 2 climbs. Hoping for an exciting finish!

A new video of the descent, from a bike. Very very clarifying.

It's ok. Not more dangerous than others with the protecciones.

Two things:

- Those wodden fences look very brutal if anyone should hit it....

- If the plastic fences are the same as used in alpine skiing, one oughta think about the fact that alpine events almost always use two or three rows of these fences to stop the skiiers.
Could a potential high-speed crasher bend the fence and get thrown over? I know these fences are higher than the ones used in skiing, but still.

The video is amazing to look at, I'd say my heart is ready to pump faster now....

I agree, i don't think they could hold back a rider if he goes in at high speed

Those heavy wooden fences on the inside of many corners could be a problem. They might cause a rider to take the turn a little wider than normal because they make the inside of the corner look really imposing. Taking a corner wider than you should at high speed could be really bad.

I wonder if someone like Nibali could make a move on this descent. A good descender could really get a gap on this......or he could kill himself.

I had a feeling this would happen with all the rain on today's stage. Pretty bummed as that looked like an amazing climb.

Bad news. But IMHO, this Giro without Crostis is still more brutal than any of the other GTs. No Crostis just means that AC will win by 10 mins margin to the 3rd instead of 15.

I really looked forward to it,but if it is to dangerous I can understand if they cancel it.

Davide Cassani rode it and had no probs with it.

Riding it vs. racing it with 150 other riders is different (though I doubt there would be any groups going up or down together). I just think that some of the DS's had a problem because they could not tow dropped riders to the top.

To bad we wont see the Descent tomorrow, since it seems to be the only place in this Giro where Nibali could have Gained time on AC. :)

Well,I will just have to relax and watch the two mountain goats crush their opponents again then. :D
