Isn't Ghirmay traveling a bit too much this year, specially for a young guy like him? Not even going to talk about the travels between Eritrea and Europe, but racing in 04/09 in Europe, traveling to Canada to race in 09/09 and 11/09 and then straight back to Europe to race in 14/09, and still planned to go to Italy to race in the 17/09 before going again to Australia?

You do realize that Australians are up till 2 AM every year watching the three grand tours and basically the entire European season.............a few races finish a little earlier.
I do realize that, and didn’t mention that in my post. I understand their frustration.

I understood that the only reason he had to get back to Europe was for the sponsors. Otherwise he would've also left for Australia already. But based on his performance in Canada, I don't really expect much from him during the WC. But I've underestimated him a couple of times this season.

Ayuso is out for Spain, presumably due to fatigue, or they're just getting round to updating his schedule? Adria and Carcia-Cortina look like their best contenders now?

Cycling worlds for breakfast, together with croissants, fruit, bacon and eggs, ...

Aight, I'm in.
For western U.S., it’s like switching places with you folks: instead cycling at (or before) breakfast, we can watch the WCs over beers in the evening. Unfortunately I’ll be hard pressed to find a tavern or pub streaming the race.

he'll fly to Australia on Saturday, so not do another race. The Italians will also abandon the Luxembourg Tour (after?) tomorrow.

I only read it in the Conci interview. So I was thinking him, Trentin, and Ballerini?

Correct. Conci, Trentin and Ballerini will fly to Milano and then to Australia with the other Italian riders (Rota, Bagioli, Battistella, Zana).

Bettiol and the TTers are already there AFAIK.

According to Frederik Broché the Technical Director of the Belgian cycling federation, Evenepoel is very tired mentally as well as physically. He's mostly resting and they are basically hoping that he doesn't decompress too much. (dutch article)

Belgian team could really use him in the RR though. Would put Van Aert in a much easier position.

Seems a wise decision. No point pushing him too far after an outstanding Vuelta and Covid to go travel 20 hours on a plane to ride an event he won’t be a top 20 favourite to win.

Spain effectively is sending a Pro-Conti squad - I feel sorry for the National coach.

It's ridiculous considering that the relegation battle is over.

Plus, the teams have no rights to prevent their riders from going to the Worlds.

That needs urgently sorting out in the rules that riders are mandated to be released if selected and they want to ride for their country.

Spain don’t really have a true contender this year even with a free hand in selection but Valverde deserves a send off in national colours and whether they could win or not isnt the point here.

I've always had a gripe about teams withdrawing riders from national championships (Sky/Ineos for ever and also Jumbo this year with Van Aert's dodgy knee).
I'd love to see a system where every rider has to ride their nationals and from there the team selection for the worlds is made. Maybe not the first eight over the line but say top 5 guarantees a place in the world championship team allowing for wild card places due to mechanicals or real injuries.

The Netherlands would end up with sprinters at mountain worlds??

I feel the exact opposite about the worlds. Trade teams should always take priority over national teams. Of course, there is some value if one of your riders wins but there's no reason to provide a national team a domestique.
