The peleton made a major mistake when they got to within 1m and 10s - The domestics needed to ride instead of marking moves.

Such a weird thing to say, but today's favourites haven't given Evenepoel enough credit.
As if he isn't former junior champion, double San Sebastian winner, LBL title holder, tt medalist...

But next time they won't let him ride away as easily, not when he's up against the best riders in the world in an important race ;-)

A bunch of good but not great WT riders only kind of working together isn't going to do it

The most unexplainable thing for me is, that they supposedly closed the gap to only a minute and then completly let it go and basically gave up. I even understand France tactics more than I understand this.

This is why I think maybe a few brown envelopes changed hands at that point. (this is a joke by the way)

'Letting' him ride away solo isn't the same as giving a group where he's by far the biggest name two minutes, though. One can be down to pure strength, the other requires tactical error.

Too many of the stronger nations had a "strongish" rider up the road I think, whereas in reality they needed their favourites to be wherever Evenepoel was to be in with any sort of chance. Regardless of the fact they might be pulling WVA over with them.

Indeed. Made it even more baffling why no country bothered to chase behind that group and was happy to give him 2 min headstart

Maybe be they didn't even know he was there until it was too late, and strong breakaway was already well formed.
