Geez, what an epiphany by Zakharov. It surely has nothing to do with Bol and Cavendish signings.

Kazakhstan track specialist Artyom Zakharov is planning to focus more on the track program and the qualifying cycle of the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris.
As the basis of his road training, the athlete wants to choose a more flexible and less saturated calendar of Astana Qazaqstan Development Team.
“This year is very important for me, as I have to participate in the qualifying competitions to gain the necessary points to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris. As a preparation for track competitions, a road base is also needed, and our development team offers a simpler, but at the same time high-quality and convenient calendar, which suits me more than the WorldTour calendar, with which track competitions and, in particular, World Cups will overlap too often. Therefore, in agreement with the management of Astana Qazaqstan Team, I decided to spend 2023 together with our development team and, accordingly, Kazakhstan National Track Team”, – said Artyom Zakharov.

Very good choice of Zakharov. In the Astana Development Team he won't be obliged to have those mammoth road seasons like he had in 2022 and 2021, with a crazy 21 and 23 race days, and will have the chance to focus in a smaller program which will allow him to focus more on the track.

Thankfully he has Vino as an understanding team leader, who understands that sometimes the good of the country comes first than the good of the team.

It's the Roman Kireyev treatment.

But in fairness to Astana, Kireyev at least actually did retire. This should be called the Guy Sagiv treatment, since ISN were just as hilariously blatant. Sagiv 'left to pursue other interests' moving down to the academy team to make roster room for Dylan Teuns, only to change his mind and come back to the sport to be signed by the same team he left mid-season last year. A lot of people poured scorn on the move being 'doing a Kireyev' but his return to the team has gone a bit under the radar in terms of being called out as the cycling equivalent of cap circumvention which is what it is.
