Will Hindley win the Giro d'Italia

Is this serious? Hell no, and its not even close.

I thought he was a total fluke two years ago. I kept believing that until this Giro, but I must admit I didnt expect him to win, Gongratulations, but its kinda weird that he didn't really try that much on the other stages - surely, you couldn't really know you were so much stronger than Carapaz here?
The only other good opportunity was Santa Cristina on the way to Aprica. Maybe he wasn't as strong then?

Mind changed.

Why people assume he was so much stronger than Carapaz on other stages. Carapaz might have had a bad day today. He was worse than Landa and Carthy today, while in the rest of the Giro he was clearly stronger than them.

If Hindley wins the Giro he will go down as the rider with the shortest time gap between having his own thread on the CN forum and winning a GT.
Quite an achievement considering even my grandma probably has a dedicated topic on here.

PS: I voted all the options in the poll just for the lulz.

Well he took a bit longer, most likely winner that is. Will he still contend for the record?

Carapaz exploded. Of course he would have dropped him. Just think that it was a fitting way to decide this years Giro. Hindley won without attempting a single serious attack on a climb.
What about the attack before he reached Kamna? The one when everbody exploded but Carapaz and which lead to Carapaz exploding hard later on. That attack was what won him the race. That's a serious attack in my book.

That doesn't change the fact that this Giro was boring.

You can't fluke a Giro podium, it always comes down to having the strongest most-consitent legs over 3 weeks and Tao & Hindley were the best on their day. How conistently you can reach the same or very similar level year after year is really the question and Hindley has reached that repeatable level, he's now in the Bernal, Carapaz, Pogacar, Roglic, Froome club who can come back and do it again and again.

De Gendt disagrees.

Well losing Yates and Bardet and Almeida really brought down the value of this Giro.
But you can't fluke two GTs.
Yeah there will always be the random Hesjedal.
But this guy is for real.
It just looks to me he doesn't have that fury, that fire inside to be a big winner.
I don't have big hopes for a grand palmares, but he's a nice and down to earth guy so I'm on his train!

Not today. Now he just needs to go to the Tour as GC team leader and see where he arrives.

Funny palmares on this dude, a couple of the most minor wins that still count as professional and then two big Giro performances and nothing else.
Quite a few of the top echelon of GT riders don't win that often. Especially back in the days the total specialists wouldn't win much outside of the GTs. Sastre had a total of 9 wins in his career. Andy Schleck had 11.

I hoped for Carapaz, but Hindley rode well. why don't you like it?

Very passive. In hindsight he played it perfectly because one move (and the pacing from Kämna) was enough. But outside of that he just followed wheels. Not a single noteworthy move. Even last Saturday when Bora wrecked the field he was super passive.
Basically a repeat of his 2020 performance with a better ending. Just following the Ineos leader. Can certainly also blame it on the route and it´s not like any other GC guy offered fireworks but I would prefer a more active style.

On a positive note. He produced some impressive numbers. And with his success he also delivered an interesting blue print on how to deal with Ineos/Sky or similar trains.

He didn’t just follow Carapaz on those occasions. He surged on numerous occasions but it wasn’t enough. Today the elastic snapped. Hindley had gone to the front on numerous occasions in this Giro but they were obviously close on strength and Hindley couldn’t crack him. He did today.

Looking at his numbers I doubt Yates or Bardet could have rivalled this. A fit Almeida would have finished behind Carapaz meaning way too much to overcome in the TT.

On fire in the belly I think that his just his personality. He has obviously got a fire in his legs.

Yes, that’s true in at least a few cases, but if you look back through previous GT winners, very few were traveling as light in their palmares when they took their first GT. Tao, of course. Froome, but only if with the benefit of hindsight you count from his retrospectively awarded Vuelta rather than his first Tour. After that you maybe have to go back to Gotti?
