By far one of the most underrated and disrespected GC riders of the modern era. Every time he has targeted a GT and been healthy, he is up there.

2020 giro - 2nd overall and stage win
2022 giro - 1st overall and stage win
2023 tour - 7th overall, stage win, yellow jersey, despite a big crash
2025 Vuelta - ???

He had a lot of bad luck and people act like he's a meme rider or Carlos Rodrigues/Ben O'Conner level rider.

He also had a lot of very lacklustre performances. Of course you ignore them because he is a rider you apparently like.

So, if a race is in the bag it's good, but if a rider is in the bag it's bad? English is such a difficult language!
The race is in the bag by the rider who is in the bag.
The rider in the bag has the race in the bag.

It's not a confidence thing, it's that Pidcock showed 0 signs of weakness. That Almeida and Vingegaard are somehow worse is pretty irrelevant even if it's pretty shocking.
If he wants to drop Pidcock he needs to set a consistently high pace. There‘s hardly any draft on double-digit gradients in a tailwind. If you don‘t try there, are you even serious about attacking? Maybe he doesn‘t need to try that hard because of the time trial, but Almeida isn‘t 10 minutes ahead of him either.

He tried, he didn't go very far. He probably wasn't feeling the best and if you don't feel the best it's hard to guess where you're at when everyone's feeling kinda crap.

A pity to miss out on the podium, but he showed that he is still a very serious GC rider when he manages to hit his peak shape. Then he can be a podium contender for any Grand Tour. This Vuelta didn’t even have a route that was particularly good for him.
