3 minutes down on the big 2 but ahead of everyone else.

I don't think anyone was suggesting Hindley would rival Pogacar and Vingegaard. The fact is when he crashed on stage 14 he was 3rd on GC and ahead of riders like the Yates twins and Carlos Rodriguez. The Yates twins and Rodriguez finished 3rd, 4th and 5th in Paris.

This year if his form is good IMO he can be at least as good as Roglic in the mountains. Obviously he will lose a lot of time in the TT, but Hindley's TT showed improvement since he won the Giro. At last year's Dauphine he lost under a minute to Vingegaard over 31km. He actually gained nearly a minute on Rodriguez that day. So the potential for a very good TdF result is there. Much might depend upon the team dynamics with Roglic.
That was literally the entire point of the discussion?

Was it? Can you quote any comment that suggested Hindley can beat Pogacar and Vingegaard on GC? This is the only reason why I replied to your January comment.

This comment echoes my view of Hindley's capability ....
If hindley returns to his best shape he can perfectly be as good as Roglic in the high mountains, i don't think Roglic showed until today a superior level on that scenario in stages with multiple climbs, or climbs with long duration.

In the TTs and final muritos, of course roglic is a lot superior.

The performances that Hindley did on piancavallo, passo fedaia, stelvio stage during the giro, were no joke.
Tomorrow Hindley will struggle to stay with his leader on that final climb. But he should be in the mix in the high mountains. And in 2023 Hindley showed improvement in the TT so I am interested to see how he performs on stage 7.

But I think Hindley's potential all comes back to team dynamics. After what he gave Bora in 2022, to me it seems a slap in the face to bring an ageing Roglic into the team rather than invest in what they already had.

This is probably the last throw of the dice for Roglic re chasing a Tour win. The contract was an odd one, Don't know how much they paid him but I'm assuming it was big money while Hindley has two Giro podiums and a top 10 in the Tour at his first attempt. The Jumbo leadership was crowded at the top so I can understand Roglic moving on. With an aging Roglic and uncertainty about Hindley staying at Bora, they will have to invest in another young talent anyway. This will probably be Roglic's only contract at Bora before more changes.Obviously they thought Roglic had a better shot at a Tour podium than Hindley as of now but they don't throw millions at riders for podiums they want to win one. As long as Roglic stays upright, I think he can do well in this race with question marks about the double and with Vingegaard's preparation.

It's probably more about how much Pogacar has left after the Giro and it seems he had quite a lot. The third week will tell all.

Hindley started training outside as well. He's on track to resume racing at some point during the summer.

Its simple. He's prepared himself to be as a leader, whereas, as in 2024 he prepared himself as a domestique.

He's lurking and looks to be getting stronger when it matters. The final week might not be a two horse race

I think so. Have been wondering what happened to 2022 Hindley.

Good to see him back. Will be confirmed if he continues to ride like today. Yes a great performance from him on Angliru. Perhaps finally rediscovering himself since IMO Roglic arriving at RB put him off his game.
TBF he was easily 3rd best at the 2023 TdF before his crash

Encouraging words by Jai Hindley. Hindley is sitting 32 seconds off Tom Pidcock on GC and a good shot at securing a podium finish in Madrid. He does look in the best shape we have seen him since he won the Giro.

If I'm honest, it's been a long time since I've been at this level. So it's nice to be back there
Absolutely.

By far one of the most underrated and disrespected GC riders of the modern era. Every time he has targeted a GT and been healthy, he is up there.

2020 giro - 2nd overall and stage win
2022 giro - 1st overall and stage win
2023 tour - 7th overall, stage win, yellow jersey, despite a big crash
2025 Vuelta - ???

He had a lot of bad luck and people act like he's a meme rider or Carlos Rodrigues/Ben O'Conner level rider.
