He had some symptoms after Sanremo already. I'd rather had him skip E3, possibly made it worse. But that's the aftermath. Just hope he's (close to) 100% again.

Isn't it also a great way to get myocarditis?
Why do you say that—do you think it’s COVID? Training with a common upper respiratory cold (for example) should pose that kind of risk—but might might make it more difficult the get the most out of training. It all depends on the illness.

A virus CAN cause the cardiac muscle to inflame, but its not common. If it was common, most athletes, even including enthusiasts, would frequently have puffy hearts.

EDIT: I've been striking out on re finding research lately, there's just too much 'stuff' on the www. So, I'm going to type a number here that I'm more than happy to delete if someone else finds better data: .0001 of the general population has myocarditis annually. Most never know it, but people who exert themselves either through work or exercise might notice the side effects.

Someone above mentioned that if he didn't have SARS-CoV2 he wouldn't have myocarditis, but viral (and bacterial for that matter) has been a condition for much longer than covid has been around. It just got recognition when some people got it after receiving the covid vaccine. The common cold/flu is the main culprit.

Think Bruyneel nailed it when he said MVDP's pride was hurt at RVV - you could see that in his postrace. He comes across so relaxed, but above all else the guy is an absolute killer and going down on his own turf, sick or not, didn't sit well. Hoping his team takes the race by the balls and sets him up to blow everyone off his wheel on the cobbles late in the race.

Thanks for bringing this up--I was unaware (and thus wrong) of this. This article covers some of the pertinent info: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11369839/

Myocarditis (heart muscle), pericarditis (sac surrounding the heart), and endocarditis (inner wall of heart and valves) can all be caused by bacteria, virus, and fungus infections though they’re all rare. They also cause real bad chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Viruses are more likely to cause myo and peri while bacteria endo. In the other threads it has been said MVP was taking antibiotics so it was a bacterial infection. That usually causes issues for endo if the antibiotics aren’t taken as ordered and for the full treatment because it could not kill all of the bacteria and the surviving cells could and can mutate into a super bacteria that’s stronger and harder to kill. These conditions also get more common if the infection gets into the bloodstream so it’s moving through the whole body and the heart is at the center. But health wise, MVP is in amazing shape, the main issue would just be if he’s overextending himself training and his body is worn down due to rebuilding from training and fighting the infection. I’ve gotten pericarditis like 3-4 weeks after I was sick and it was terrible and had real bad chest pain and it took about 2 weeks to recover.

Though on the heart and any individual it’s hard to say since anything can happen, no matter how healthy you are. Case in point is Colbrelli, he was sick with an infection, came back potentially too soon, and ended up having ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia that required him to have the implant incase it occurs again.

Hopefully MVP has no issues and can perform at his best.

The team has also said he got sick after E3.

How in the hell colbrelli beat him few years ago
MVDP went into that race a bit compromised. Was still in the thick of the back issues that were exacerbated by his big crash just a few months earlier in Tokyo. Without the wet conditions that year he probably isn't even at the front of that race. Was there because he was killing guys in an out of corners.

Pogi is the best road racer in the world, but he is not the best all-around bike racer in the world. That guy won the bike race today. Now on to the MTB!

I'm not sure if getting 2nd in Roubaix disqualifies Pogacar for that title... he could have won. MVDP can never in a million years win the Tour de France. That's the difference. Not to take anything away from MVDP's win, but Pogacar was ridiculously strong today (didn't look very strong initially though).

Another one. Good to be a big fan of Mathieu. A shame he got sick last week but his level is just insane in these races. Would’ve loved to see a duel but that won’t be remembered if you count his classics win.

Reminded me of Glasgow two years ago. Even ignoring potential crashes he saves an insane amount of energy with his bike handling ability. And it's not even about the cobbles. It's about corners.
Compared to a good (for a GC rider) bike handler like Pog he gains 1-2s in every single tight corner. Over 6h and 250+ kms that adds up to an advantage that is almost impossible to match on a course that doesn't offer enough vertical meters to make it about w/kg.
Not to even mention that he also has one of the biggest engines in the field. Probably 2nd or 3rd behind Pog (maybe Remco).
