Although they shared a lot of peak years, it seemed like one was often hurt or perhaps had a mech/crash or something to kill the H2H several years. For example, where was Cancellara in 2012 when Boonen smashed everyone - can't recall why he wasn't in the picture that year.

He crashed in the feed zone at Flanders...and was out the rest of the spring. (broken collar bone????)

MvdP is not like Sagan, who spent the whole year from January to November drilling at the front of the peloton, for which he was paid handsomely. MvdP concentrates only on the biggest races. It might have been a big risk to offer him a very big contract that he couldn't refuse. Looking back at MvdP's road results in recent years, it would have been worth the risk, but who would have predicted in 2016 that he would become the best classics rider?!

Well I think those 2, back then, got a startiing fee close to 10000€/race. Add a couple of 10k more for superprestige gc + their normal contract wages and, yes, it is thát lucrative for the top dogs.

Figueroa Champion classic is surely too soon after cyclocross worlds to get a proper break and training camp for the classics.

The EF spaceman helmet and general scruffiness don't help, either. Contrast with MvdP who is basically the Platonic pro cyclist in looks and style. But all that really matters is getting the power down.

If he is doing that programme, he is either not doing an Altitude camp to prepare the classics, or he is doing CX benidorm during an Altitude camp at the syncosfhera hotel on Costa del sol.

Might be the (only) downside of having the very best classics riders of this generation be so multitalented (CX, MTB, GTs) that they have to reduce some of their classics schedules to fit everything in. Can’t member classics specialists in prior generations skipping San Remo. I suppose it also reflects the increased emphasis on training camps. Which I think is too bad for fans.
