Well, well, well that might explain the good tt yesterdagy.
MVDP has been training on the tt bike!!! :openmouth: What is happening?! :)

From Het Nieuwsblad:

With a sixth place, VDP exceeded expectations, but he did not want to call it a real surprise. “I had hoped to ride in the top ten, so I am happy with the result. For the first time in my life, I started working a bit on the time trial bike. It is nice that it pays off immediately. We have worked on the position on the bike after the spring and I have also ridden more hours on the time trial bike. In the past, I have already been in the situation a few times to really compete for the classification, so I finally wanted to invest time in the time trial.”

He also has some humor:

“When I was in Spain, I sent Remco a picture of my time trial bike as a joke. I asked him if I could finish within a minute behind him during the time trial in the Dauphiné.” That didn’t quite work out: Van der Poel ended up… 1:01 behind an unleashed Evenepoel. “It didn’t quite work out, huh? I think I lost that second yesterday in the breakaway. We bet for nothing, but maybe we can make a new bet before the Tour. Then the time trial will be twice as long, so I’ll have to finish within two minutes behind him?”

I say he makes under two minutes! :D

After Mathieu’s finish Remco immediately said “1:01, I would’ve caught you right at the finish line”.

He’s definitely going to try and get in the breakaway. I’m not sure why Visma would care he does. Just let the breakaway take the win before the next stages.

Do I not remember it being said that he had, unusually, done quite a bit if TT work before the 2021 TdF, in the hope that he might be in yellow and that this would give him a chance to retain it for longer, which is indeed how it turned out.

We know that cycling as a sport is not particularly environmentally friendly, but at least where I am, there is a considerable overlap between following cycling as a sport, cycling as a sport/hobby, and alertness to environmental issues.

I think MvdP has badly misread the room, initially with the high visibility Lamborghini arrival at CX races, now with this.

I think part of that is because he himself isn't really into cycling or its culture, except as a participant.

Anyway, I'm a bit amused at the comments who said they used to like him, but not any more. Like, shouldn't you have made that decision once vdP transitioned to full-time road cyclist if you care about the climate? He could have made a decent living off being a world-class cyclocrosser and MTBer. Other than hunger (or greed) for prestige, adrenaline, and money, there was no reason to turn to road cycling, with all its aeroplanes for TV coverage, helicopters, countless motorbikes, team vehicles, and publicity caravans. Nobody who cares about the climate should support pro cycling and pro cyclists in any form. There is no benefit to it, except the (relatively small number of) people in front of the TV and at the side of the road get a dopamine hit they could easily get doing something else, more constructive.

I kept the obvious periphery out of my post because I felt like that could go bad quickly. I would just like him to be more honest if he feels the need to defend his decisions.

"I can avoid the germs of commercial flights, avoid the craziness at the airport, get home more quickly/recover more quickly, and make some extra money."

Only thing worse if he was shilling for a petro-state or petrochemical firm or something.

The funniest type of "green" cyclist is MTBer that takes their F-150 two hours to the bike park and gets shuttled for all of the uphill travel.

And despite PJ/Lambo travel, the cyclist who races and trains almost entirely within a small section of western Europe probably has a smaller carbon footprint than, say, some runner on the Diamond League circuit.

Once in a lifetime chance for Van der Poel to be one of the main protagonists of the Tour.

Up to 8 stages that suit him and a possible chance of taking the green jersey, I hope that he brings his A-game this time.
He better, or the first long "week" will be fairly insufferable.

Looked quite good today. Rode strongly to make the split hold.
Maybe he went off a bit early in the leadout. Hope it's not a bad sign.

Tomorrow I want to see fireworks. It has been a couple of lackluster years in the tour for Mathieu.

Time for yellow again!
