I am pretty convinced now, that Bernal is the best bet for the "Who will be the first LE TOUR winner from Colombia" .... I don't believe Nairo will ever make it, and Rigo "Jagger" Uran certainly not .....

So, Bernal now into the 3rd week of the Tour. Apart from folks personal views on why he should have/have not done the tour and maybe gone to the Vuelta, how has he done for his debut? I think he has conducted himself quite well and SKY could well let him have a go at joint leadership in a GT next year if G leaves. His pull on Alpe was really impressive and hopefully he can go well with Poels during the mountains this week. Shame he couldn't have had a go at white but he does have time on his hands.

Skills & talent wise he's the rightful Colombian to ever win Le Tour - However- the question is: on which team? because as long as Froome- and now G- remain the Sky leaders, I doubt Egan will ever be given a chance to lead.
now bear in mind that SKY & Froome are nowadays going for "doubles", so I guess Egan is likely to be settling for week long races while domestiquing for them ..........

Bernal is just 21 years old, Froome is 33 and Geraint is 32. Bernal, if his form continues to improve, is on the fast track to being a Tour winner within the next few years and then has the whole of his cycling prime to pursue multiples whether at Sky or somewhere else, he seems to be made for 3 week Grand Tours and has looked very good on the big climbs this tour when doing the donkey work, as well as in his wonderful win at the Tour of California.

If you followed Egan closely in the first week, especially in the first and Roubaix stage, you could already draw the conclusion that Sky wanted him high up in the GC. No helper puts in that much of an effort to return to the peloton at about 10ks from the finish. No helper gets two man assigned to him to bring him back to the peloton after he had a minor crash. This is strengthened by the fact that Egan did a big reconnaissance of the Roubaix stage and the ITT of later this week. Those aren't traits of someone who is just here to enjoy the view, set himself in the choo choo train and do some work in the mountains for his leader(s).

Yes, it was obvious that Bernal was the 3rd option. Unfortunately he not only crashed once on the cobbled stage, but really had a *** day in the saddle. Otherwise, he would easily have been top-10 and white jersey and this point. And most liekly held on to it.
Sky arent working him into the ground at all, despite what they say it was pretty obvious he should try to stay up in the GC contrary to Poels, for example. That was really obvious in the first week, but also in the Alps and Mende where he rode to the line. I think they would want him to try to ride a GC already know to know what they have and see how his body responds to it. In a way similar to Rohan Dennis. Next year, he can already win GTs.

Perhaps I need to be more specific: Egan Bernal will not be the initial designated Leader for a TOUR DE FRANCE, as long as SKY- an UK team ALWAYS prioritizing UK riders above and beyond everything and anything- has Froome, G or perhaps Rowe in the team.
Now - Froome too old? I don't want to cross Clinic territory, but Froome is getting STRONGER, since he's attempting successfully doubles (last year Tour+ Vuelta and now Giro+Tour) So I'd give him 3 more years "G"? but where is he going to go? Astana? Trek? Mitchelton? really?
There is no doubt that Egan will win a GT in a few year's time with SKY IF, ONLY IF neither Froome or G are racing in it- otherwise he's likely to be relegated to help them out as long as he's part of the team....

I have to agree with this as well as with del1962. Neither Froome nor G are likely to want to race the Giro next year and no one else deserves leadership.
