Exactly, Canc took back something like 40 + seconds on the downhill/flat bit.

Again, with both at their peak and fresh, on a flat course Canc wins by 2 + minutes.

Back on topic: I doubt Armstrong believes he has a realistic chance of winning. All of this: "record time? No. Pretty close.I'm ready." nonsense is a PR stunt for the fanboys.
I am not a fan boy of Lance. He is from the country Texas I am from the country California.
I think Lance will win because of treachery, great training, luck, and his xenophobic desire to win 8, to put it out of range of Contador.
Lance has an awesome team and the alliances of many in the peloton. He shall use these advantages to their fullest capacity. If you want to underestimate these factors go ahead. I am old and I mess with the younger riders minds. This is how the psycology of cycling works.

Continuing OT: a single climb and Contador was ahead at checks 1 and 2 before the climb (probably helped by wind on the first half)

On topic: unfortunately even in his semi-fossil state and with the recent developments i won't discount Armstrong as a podium contender. He's got the "preparation" dialed in so well.:eek::rolleyes:

Contador I think does not have as great a backup team this year. He does have a fantastic team though. For this race Lance definitley has the superior team to Contador. I really think the race is between Contador and Lance. Probably Lance might not have finished third last year if he was not allied with Contador. Obviously this is Lances last year. I hope Lance pulls out all the stops and I mean all the stops to get 8 this year. After all this is the tour and we must keep up with tradition ehhhhh....

He has better support than last year IMO.
As for age and treachery overcoming youth and skill, it wasn't true in the 50s and it isn't the case these days. LA can top 5 at best, if that.

Sorry I think the Shack team will smoke Astana team this year. Lance and Bruyneel are way smarter and trecharous then Vino and the Italian DS. Vinokurov has always been a Joker in the deck. Watch out for Jokers like him. Could get you disqualified from the poker game.

I will laugh so hard if Vino challenges Contadors GC leadership.

It would be quite interesting to see what AC would do to Vino tested + and Astana got eliminated.

Contador is a fantastic talent. I was sad to see Vino stifle Contador into Astana. If and when Vino turns pos. I hope Contador is long gone. Contador does not deserve Vinos crap.

Yeah, I saw that but didn't read it to suggest anything about his ability to accelerate (which hasn't been seen in any events this year). So he's now claiming that he's back to his 1999 numbers (were he logged his best time on Madone)? As opposed to last year he was claiming that he was hitting his 2002 numbers? Interesting...

I can't wait to see him win the prologue then.

Using the famous words of Reverend Jesse Jackson, Armstrong is just trying to "keep hope alive" for all his loyal subjects. As Publicus said, Armstrong made a similar statement last year but the truth was in his actual Tour performance not in his "numbers", not to minimize his podium finish but he can thank the TTT for that.

You do realize that even in this scenario you've created that Evans still will not win and just may finish behind Samuel Sanchez, another dreaded Spaniard!;)

Lance had the same team working for him last year. And the same DS. Apparently what Lance didn't do, if you believe Lance, is train. Now that's what he's saying now (see the Outside article floating around today). At the start of the Tour last year, of course, he was saying he was hitting his 2002 numbers, which I believe means that he trained his **** off to be ready for the Tour.

I think Lance's hope is that something happens to AC on stage 3. Not that he loses time (that can be taken back). But that he is somehow injured. He knows that neither he, nor anyone else with Radio Shack, has any secret elixir to beating Contador. He no longer has the physical skills to compete mano-y-mano with AC and psychologically he lost a long time ago. They've tried and continue to try mind games (I wonder if anyone else is noticing the lovefest on twitter and in the press between the Schlecks and Radio Shack's principals--all of sudden (a little too ham fisted to be believed IMO)). Mind games and hope.

Publcus, i am pretty sure lance said he was hitting 2002 numbers last year. Don't pay attention to any of his talk!

I'm positive he said it at this time last year. Just like he said he's close to his best time on the Col de Madone (which was in 1999) this year. I know it's talk. He's not shown any form this year that would support his contentions (even in the much heralded Tour de Suisse) that he is climbing like he did in the past. Even in his hey day, he could climb pretty well at the Dauphine.

Maybe he only soft pedalled up the madone in his prime years ;). I'm somewhat a fan of him unfortunately but even I don't believe it when he says things like that, which says enough :d.

You probably should do some research before you start commenting. Lance would have finished 3rd without the TTT. Check the times yourself.

Lance is close to his 1999 numbers this year. He will be unstoppable.

Sports are not simple maths, it's not about adding or substracting numbers. Without the TTT, the race would have been tactically different, so we simply can't say.

This reply is just an excuse to point out I always read your screenname as "lancewilling", which makes me chuckle.
