Just rewatched 2000 TDF when Lance shot like a rocket up Ventoux to get the Pirate then only to be a nice guy and give him the stage win. The most breathtaking and violent acceleration in cycling history. Jan Ullrich wanted to cry and give up cycling after seeing Lance zoom on by.

I'll never believe that Armstrong gifted the stage, he might have said it. But really, give away Ventoux? Pantani was the better one
(perhaps this post was biased due to a massive amount of love for Pantani, almost as big as Joe Papps love for VIno)

He didn't gift it. That's one of the stages that has ever eluded him. Up the Mt. Ventoux.

Yeah, no, he gifted it in the most awkward manner. He had little experience in being a nice guy, and it showed.

Allright, watched it again, for the first time in almost ten years I guess, and that was no gift

No. If you watch that stage Armstrong was clearly stronger. Pantani was doing all he could to catch him and their body language on the bike illustrates this.

Armstrong was rock solid and Pantani was visibly struggling. I'm sure Marco was asking himself what the hell was this guy on to ride like this on such a mountain.

It was clear that Armstrong let up so Pantani could come through first on the stage.

And this is from a guy who would never give Armstrong props for ANYTHING he's done on a bike.

John Burke must be very upset.

Having lunch w/ Mike Sinyard (who founded Specialized), his son, and friends. Talking about our shared passion for the bike. Great man.

is Lance the greatest gt rider ever?

I think he is. I think it was unic in history, during his reign, Lance was the best climber of the world and the best time trialist. He was the absolute Gt rider. He has won 7 Tours during a period where savoldelli won the giro and aitor gonzales won the vuelta. The field in the tour was the most competitive ever.

Mercxx has been unable to win 6 Tours and was not very dominant in the mountains.

Idem for Hinault and he was litteraly humiliated by Fignon in 84.

IMO, only Coppi and maybe contador (if he improve his TT, but with Riis he has a chance) in the future can contest him this title.

Eddy Merckx has won 11 - 5 tours, 5 giros, 1 vuelta
Bernard Hinault 10 - 5 tours, 3 giros, 2 vueltas
Jacques Anquetil 8 - 5 tours, 2 giros, 1 vuelta

So, do the math.

This clearly shows your ignorance of cycling. BTW, in your original post-you called Lance a unic. Hopefully you know what that means. Other mistakes in your post include-your Merckx comment, he was absolutely dominant, the idea that the TDF fields during Lance's reign were the strongest of all time, the fact that you didn't even mention Anquetil, and the Vuelta winners weren't always as weak as Aitor Gonzalez. (Roberto Heras at his best could have hurt Lance in the mountains)

I admit, i misspoke, the giro is almost as important as the tour (mostly in the '50s 70s).But i mean it s not only a question of palmares. The performance of Basso in the '06 Giro was the one of great great gt rider. The key idea of my post is that Lance was both the very best climber and the very best time trialist, that his the perfect and absolute combinaison for a Gt rider.

He mastered all the aspect of a gt and it s very rare in cycling history.

^ Contador mastered every aspect of a Grand Tour. And he won 5 GT at the age of 27. Armstrong only won one Grand Tour at that time. In a very weak field.

Owh, and Armstrong got his **** kicked by a certain mister Contador. Twice.

And Armstrong's field during his reign wasn't really all that strong.

Armstrong didn't have to compete against the likes of Andy Schleck during his reign. His toughest foe was what? Ullrich? He's not what I would call a great climber.
