If Armstrong drops out of three classic races well in advance and says it's because of a Scout event with his kid (that was over way before the races next Sunday, the Wednesday after that, and the Sunday after that), then he's the one involving the Scouts and his children. The Pinewood Derby is over, the guy has a private jet, why can't he fulfill his race commitments? And if the Pinewood Derby isn't the reason he's missing those races, he or his press people shouldn't have told the world that it was. It's called lying. And it's the kind of thing people do so their motives aren't questioned.

I was at a hotel where Lance was staying some years ago - he was dating Sheryl Crow at the time.
The French bartender came down to us and pointed rather enthusiastically saying "look that is Sheryl Crow", I had to correct him and say "ah, thats Lances mother"....... I can still see his face!

Not exactly the same... because the Hinault/Lemond thing happened before Lemond won a GT. Contador had three going into the tour last year.


I think it could have ended up VERY similar if Lance hadn't retired though... I think 2007 might have been a lot like 1985.

This thing about a 'rivalry' is hilarious. Lance isn't nearly in AC's league any longer, and is certainly not the worry for AC. Andy Schleck and others, but no rivalry with Lance. Lance would like to think there is, because that would mean he is in some way close.

I don't know if 2007 would have happened if Lance was there. Lance's control of the team wouldn't have allowed Contador to be that close.

Disco's 07 Tour team was Levi's team. Levi isn't nearly as controllling as Lance and couldn't hang with Rasmussen on the climbs.

Didn't Armstrong mention last year that if any rider on one of his TdF winning teams rode their own race they would have been sent home?

There is no rivalry. Talk about using a media contrivance to sell books.

I noticed how rabid the fanboys and media got when Armstrong tweeted his famous "He's got a lot to learn" tweet when Contador bonked at Paris-Nice.

Anyone with a rational viewpoint would have seen it for what it was-the beginning of a pathetic media war against his own teammate, which is about as low as you can go in a team sport such as cycling.

But boy did everyone go to town on that one. It was overblown because in the end Armstrong could not compete with Contador. Just like he cannot now.

Not to mention that Contador kind of stumbled into the lead in '07.

Stumbled, eh? Reality is not subjective. The results are what they are regardless of the amount of spin. Contador was the only one challenging Rasmussen, going to-to-toe with him in the mountains. No other rider was doing this. Everyone else was stumbling to keep up. Contador was RACING.

Was it dico's objective for him to win? I doubt it. So, I'll stand by my subjective interpretation of reality and say stumbled. My subjective view of reality also says after all the pretty attacks in the mountains, he was fortunate he had enough time on Evans.
