Fans care more about championships and victories than whether the athlete is a douche, doper, or felon. If LA were a douche who wasn't a winner, this thread wouldn't exist. Same with L Flandis - no TdF victory, no interest in whatever event he's showing up for in Nevada. Lance attracts more interest than Contador because he's won more prominent victories, first and foremost. Having more charisma and a more inspirational story (cancer) also helps. Finally, Armstrong have demonstated more in the way of business savvy than Contador.

And that trademark pistolero sign sets off my douche detector - bigtime.

Here is an even bigger douche detector-someone who signs on to a cycling site to protect his man-crush. Say, like YOU for instance.

I can hear you now standing outside the 7-11 with BPC and Flicker after finally finding enough loose change in the sofa to buy a "Big Gulp"(one, and three straws)-"Lance Armstrong-he is SOOOOOOOOO everything I've ever wanted to be but can't-I MUST LOVE HIM!!!! I MUST DEFEND HIM!!!! HE IS ME AND I AM HIM!!!!"

As for the pistol salute, get used to it all July long...

Um, who's got the man crush Berzin? I'll let the photo you posted serve as exhibit A. Feeling a bit insecure with Contador/Armstrong's recent run of form?

Not all who dislike (notice I didn’t say hate) LA happen to be AC fans. I dislike both of them, but to different degrees. The reasons for LA speak for themselves. The reasons for AC are admittedly far fewer, but the pistolero salute is one of them. I would like to see someone win who was not so arrogant/cocky about it…… someone like Voeckler, for example.

Interesting to compare these recent runs of form and where time was won or lost:

Prologue: Contador 1st Armstrong 44th
ITT: Contador 5th Armstrong 11th
Queen Stage: Contador 1st Armstrong 7th
GC: Contador 2nd Armstrong 2nd

Contador's GC ranking mirrors his stage results, while Armstrong's clearly doesn't.
Even stranger is the fact that Armstrong was much closer, in terms of time, to winning his GC.

Then Frank Schleck takes it on the time trial.

What an odd event Switzerland turned out to be. I struggle to call it a race, more of a mass training ride. Not that the Dauphine was eyeballs out.

An oddly enough folks were questioning AC's form coming out of the Dauphine, and playing up Armstrong's after Tour de Suisse.

MellowVelo makes an interesting, fact based comparative point about Armstrong/Contador form in Dauphine/TdS. They competed in different races with different stages against different levels of competition. BUT it shows that a competitor (like LA) can podium in a longer stage race without finishing top 3 in either the prologue, ITT or queen stage against top (albeit pre-peak) competitors. I argue the more stages/longer the race, the more the podium becomes a game of wits/team - as secondary factors behind the individual's strength. Hard to argue that anyone can beat Contador man-to-man without allergies, tactical mistakes, or accidents. Easier to argue Armstrong can beat Contador by being a better strategist/opportunist over a 3-week stage race with an ITT at the end. Whether LA can improve his form relative to his competitors is an open question.

I would argue that it meant that the folks ahead of him on podium prior to the start of the ITT sucked against the clock. He finished 11th in the ITT.

But judging the finish line and podium gestures is the right of every true fan. You know that these guys rehearse in front of mirror, don't you? And I thought you knew something about cycling! Boy was I wrong. And don't use that podium gesture...I know what you're doing.

Agreed - the folks ahead of LA on GC going into the ITT were shown to be 2nd class ITTers. 2 points: (1) LA was less than 15 seconds slower than Klodi and Levi on his ITT; (2) On the queen stage, finishing times suggest only Gesink was stronger than LA.

An exploration of how LA placed in the ITT/big mtn stages of last year's TdF might yield incremental insight. Same with his Giro performance last year. I suspect the TdS comparative results versus last year's Giro represent improvement for LA. That might be why some are buzzing over LA's TdF prospects following the 2010 TdS within the context of 2009's TdF results.

I would quibble with your second point, since Lance was gapped at the top of the climb as well. He was just a better bike handler/descender than some of the others. I don't think his form is bad, but I certainly didn't read his results as saying that he's definitely in contention after having a nothing of a spring (in terms of results).

I'm awaiting the prologue to judge his ITT performance, because I don't really believe him when he admits his TT sucks, why in the world would he say that if he believes he can win the tour... I don't buy it... If he sucks in the prologue then you can already put a cross over his chances though, since he obviously isn't one of the best climbers anymore...

Funny enough, he said the same thing last year about the prologue/opening ITT, that it would tell you all you needed to know about who was the best on the team. That changed after he finished 4th on his team.

EDIT: Misread your last point.

Hilarious - link to Contador's online shop for pistolero gear.

https://www.albertocontador.com/tienda.php?idioma=en

I cant decide whether to get the T-shirt or cap. . . Which will help me score more with the ladies?? Please help!

Oh - thank goodness - part of my purchase will go to the Alberto Contador Foundation.

Hmm - is Alberto trying to be like Lance with his Foundation and gear?

Exactly. Fränk won the GC without even making it into the top 10 of the TT, for god's sake.

(Incidentally, that's what makes some people believe it was a more extraordinary/unbelievable ride by Fränk than it actually was)

edit: the whole pistolero thing is douche material, no doubt about that

No, I am sure he doesn't ask for a $2 million speaking fee to talk about how much of a stud he thinks he is for letting doctors beat his cancer.

Agreed! No way could AC command a $2MM score from a speaking engagement. Instead, he is hawking his 10 euro children's book instead. Not as commercially successful, equally money-grubbing, and far more CREEPY!

Yea, no way Contador would prostitute cancer patients the way The Uniballer does. CREEPY! indeed...
