figured i'd start this thread regarding the rankings, surely there has been a smiliar thread, but alas I'm too lazy to look.

UCI World Rabkings---

Rider rankings

1 CANCELLARA Fabian SUI19810318 LEOPARD TREK (LEO) 236
2 GOSS Matthew Harley AUS19861105 HTC-HIGHROAD (THR) 203
3 KLÖDEN Andreas GER19750622 TEAM RADIOSHACK (RSH) 202
4 SCARPONI Michele ITA19790925 LAMPRE - ISD (LAM) 202
5 GILBERT Philippe BEL19820705 OMEGA PHARMA-LOTTO (OLO) 176

9 EVANS Cadel AUS19770214 BMC RACING TEAM (BMC) 128
10 MARTIN Tony GER19850423 HTC-HIGHROAD (THR) 114

will probably change a little in the next week. Maybe gilbert can seize the lead.

Team Rankings:

1 1 TEAM RADIOSHACK (RSH) USA 465
2 2 HTC-HIGHROAD (THR) USA 453
3 3 RABOBANK CYCLING TEAM (RAB) NED 398
4 4 TEAM GARMIN-CERVELO (GRM) USA 358
5 5 LEOPARD TREK (LEO) LUX 345
6 6 BMC RACING TEAM (BMC) USA 278
7 10 SKY PROCYCLING (SKY) GBR 275
8 12 OMEGA PHARMA-LOTTO (OLO) BEL 258
9 7 LAMPRE - ISD (LAM) ITA 253
10 8 MOVISTAR TEAM (MOV) ESP 248
11 9 QUICKSTEP CYCLING TEAM (QST) BEL 234
12 11 SAXO BANK SUNGARD (SBS) DEN 219
13 13 LIQUIGAS-CANNONDALE (LIQ) ITA 168
14 16 KATUSHA TEAM (KAT) RUS 153
15 14 EUSKALTEL-EUSKADI (EUS) ESP 111
16 15 AG2R LA MONDIALE (ALM) FRA 103
17 17 VACANSOLEIL-DCM PRO CYCLING TEAM (VCD) NED 64
18 18 PRO TEAM ASTANA (AST) KAZ 45

obviously important in terms of who gets a PT license, providing the uci don't change again. Can only assume points will be an imporatnt factor. Not looking to good for vasc. I would assume astana will pick up some points from here on.

Nations Ranking:

1 3 BELGIUM BEL 560
2 2 AUSTRALIA AUS 558
3 1 ITALY ITA 525
4 4 SPAIN ESP 432
5 5 GERMANY GER 399
6 6 NETHERLANDS NED 342
7 7 SWITZERLAND SUI 296
8 8 UNITED STATES USA 266
9 9 FRANCE FRA 178
10 10 GREAT BRITAIN GBR 161

11 13 DENMARK DEN 92
12 11 IRELAND IRL 72
13 12 COLOMBIA COL 57
14 14 AUSTRIA AUT 44
15 15 PORTUGAL POR 43

Another important one. Top 10 determines which nations will have 9 riders in the road race at the world champs.
In particular I suspect GB will want to be in the top ten. Can having 8 guys in support rather then 2 or 5 will be massive boost for his hopes.

On a personal note. It is good to see the ducth at a much better place at this point of the season. They have made hard work of it in the last few years.
in 09 they didn't even manage to make the top 10.
However this year the riders have been up there in basically every pt race.
Not taht is matters this year, we have no hope :p

personally, i think these rankings are a joke. i know they're geared to count the larger races more, but vacansoleil at 17?!? in the cqranking for 2011 vacansoleil is number 8! that's ridiculous to have that big of a disparity between the two rankings, especially when i think most of us would agree that the cqranking is much much more reliable than these rankings

5th actually.
but agree the rankings are poorly constructed.

It all stems up to a crappy wt system tho.

edit sorry; I posted rankings of the last 12 months. not season

Vacansoleil were pretty different in CQ and UCI rankings last year iirc.

Also, regarding the team ranking and what could happen next year - Garmin, Katusha, Quick Step, Lotto and Saxo Bank's licenses all expire at the end of this year. Obviously Katusha and Lampre have other issues as well.

It is an odd system, especially since we, or at least I, don't know what it's used for right now other than their end of year stats. At the meeting the teams walked out of, there was a presentation of the "ProTeam registration and ranking process for 2012". Hopefully some of that info will leak out. But last year the UCI wanted teams to compete at Quebec and Montreal, so winners there got the same UCI points as La Fleche Wallonne and Amstel Gold. Finishing tenth at Romandie gets you points. Winning Giro del Trentino gets you nothing. Contador got all of his points at Catalunya. Someone who raced Pais Vasco and Paris-Nice would have had a chance to earn more. It's nice that they announce the leaders, but it really doesn't mean much.

Races that count, with 4 different levels of points
Tour de France

Giro d'Italia
Vuelta a Espana

Tour Down Under
Paris-Nice
Tirreno-Adriatico
Milano-Sanremo
Tour des Flandres
Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
Paris-Roubaix
Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Tour de Romandie
Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré
Tour de Suisse
Tour de Pologne
Eneco Tour
Giro di Lombardia

Gent - Wevelgem
Amstel Gold Race
La Flèche Wallonne
Clasica Ciclista San
Sebastian -San Sebastian
Vattenfall Cyclassics

I find it odd that Italy are going well. Other than Scarponi, Guardini and Cunego they are not going so great. Spose it all adds up.

In the world tour rankings they should show the Pro continental teams as well don't you think. We should start a thread saying who might end up winning and being a pro tour team.

Italy's five riders (only the top 5 count towards the nation ranking) are actually Scaponi (202), Ballan (100), Basso (92), Nibali (71) and Bennati (62)

The UCI rankings/World Tour (different sides of same coin) are clearly a tool for establishing a top tier/premiership division. The nearer the existing body comes to providing such a thing, the lesser the likelihood of the top teams splitting off on their own to do the same thing. To that extent, it is comparable to the expansion of qualification criteria for the Champions League by UEFA rather than having the G14 (or whatever number they claim now) making a European Superleague as they have often threatened.

While CQ tells a story that should be told (UCI of course don't ignore the non-WT races, they count towards the very under-promoted continental rankings), I find the tracking of performance in a series of top races interesting, and worthwhile: results in the best races over results in bulk of races. Obviously there will be disagreements as to where the cut-off for events included is to be: not many of us would count Tour of Beijing or the Canadian races as among the top 27 events of the year.

I find a yearly rolling ranking far better than the ones here, all of which judge riders based on whether their races come early in the calendar:rolleyes:

So without further adu

Absolutely. If you're talking about an overall ranking. This thread seems to be about rankings for the year which is how Worlds qualification is decided. I wish they would use a rolling year ranking for a leaders jersey - that would be extremely cool, imo.

Absolutely. That would be brilliant. A rolling rankings leaders jersey, it would become prestigious quite quickly simply for the fact that all the riders who wear it would have to be absolutely top.

The issue, however, is that there is no beginning or end of the cycle. So nobody would ever be able to 'win' it.

Fail - it still allows the same end of season cut off to occur - your complaint could just as easily, and incorrectly, be made against the current system.

This just makes the mid-season jersey feel a bit more meaningful.

Personally, no jersey at all would be super.
