Regarding Evenepoel's comments...
What he said could certainly have been taken as insulting...which is in the ear of the beholder. Maybe Vingo was insulted, maybe not. Whatever the case, in the US we'd call those comments "bulletin board material", as in "I'm going to post this on the team bulletin board, so that you can all read them every time you walk in here for the next several days". If I'm Vingo, I'm thinking, "We'll see who has balls when I'm dropping your ass on Plateau de Beille". Whether he does or not, you get the point.
Comments like this have the tendency to fire up the opposition, which makes them...dumb.
What we also saw wasn't "nuance" as many have posited here, what we saw was a guy who realized what he said was dumb (progress!) and immediately "walked back the comments" in real time. So he's learning...a bit. But his instinct is self-centered, he sees the race through his lens. He then realized that Vingo had perfectly good reasons for not racing with them, he doesn't care whatsoever about the podium, he's not worried about Roglič, etc. He's maturing in that he sees when he's being stupid and tries to correct it. But he's not there yet.
I like Remco. I don't particularly like Vingo, he's boring. But he's also the 2-time defending Tour champion and Remco hasn't done jack squat in the Tour so far, and he should show more respect. Which he immediately realized.
I don't mind controversy, but I do mind dumb. And if you're rooting for Remco, the comment was dumb.
