The man himself is first to blame. He should have been more attentative.
Absolutely, it's incredible the two favorites are at the very front during conditions any junior would know could lead to echelons, and Remco's making blueberry muffins at the back.

And what of the "Wolf Pack"? As a Belgian squad should they not know something about danger of echelons? The amateur nature of it is mind-boggling, especially since they came with Remco for GC and Merlier for this finish. Unbelievable.

Well he did say please. But you can just see the happiness quickly disappear from the boy's face.
I hope he can recover from this. That goes for the fan, too.

Agreed! What is the point of being really attentative in the first part of the stage, and totally turned off in the last decisive part!I cant get my head around this one, he should have been easy with the first group.

Merlier and Van Lerberghe was in a good position only a couple of kilometers before the split. Maybe they got called back to help Remco? If so a missed opportunity for Merlier to win the stage and get yellow. He is clearly a better sprinter then Phillipsen (atleast before the tour) He would have ripped apart that sprint.

Have to wait for interview/statement from Remco and the team before we can finally conclude, but this was shocking and sad for the rest of the tour.

To the bolded, I couldn't find any Saudal riders in good position. At the time, I was like wtf are you guys doing so far back. Vingo, Pogi, MvdP are at the tip of the race, there is wind, and you are in the belly of the group. Wtf.

The same mess as in the Dauphine, but no chance to fix this in the Tour off course. Really pathetic racing, if Pogacar moves to the front where Visma is gathering and Vingegaard is up in front you need to be there. "We were caught sleeping" yeah right... Very frustrating, expect him to drop more time in the coming stages. He just can not position himself. Klaas Lodewijck is a silly spineless fanboy.

QS was known to be an echelon team and a TTT team. With 8 potential sprints stages where echelons are a possibility you make sure that you have that covered.

Pretty disappointing.

At what point is tooling around in 70th a plan for a podium contender on a stage with potential echelons?

Always rooted for Remco as I'm hoping for a Belgian Tour winner someday, but...you'd think the Belgians would be all over a stage like this. The boy just don't ride like I wish he did.

he said he was in 70th. Thought things were calm in the peloton...

I'm starting to think he may not be very intelligent
?!?! That's so insane and frustrating; it's just becoming a constant with him. "Thought things were calm...."? I have been a fan of his for a long time but this kind of thing makes it harder. It's stage 1 of the Tour, even if things are momentarily calm it's not rocket science to understand things can and will go thermonuclear in the blink of an eye. You are Remco Evenepoel, it's THE TOUR DE FRANCE, you're here for GC, you glue yourself to Tadej and Jonas, end of story. Good lord.

Remco, Remco, it wasn't that hard to predict that Visma might try something.
I mean, they usually ride agressive when there are echelons.

Yellow still a possibility, but it will take one hell of a ride on wednesday.

now, if he cannot take 40 seconds out of Pog and Vingo in a 33km flat ITT, he does not deserve to take yellow anyways
