The way he rode today says otherwhise. Crosswinds and he decides to postion himself towards the back :kissingheart: The Belgians are fuming.
I don't know that after Wellens' ride today that all Belgians upset, Tim wore the national colors with honor. And to top off a great race, Wellens finished next to last in front group, but snuck into the ST and got no time loss..

He only lost time to Pogi and Vingo. So he is still racing for 3rd (edit, Enric Mas made the split).

But GC contenders being awake to possible splits and echelons is nothing new. Its a big mistake due to lack of concentration. That's 39 seconds wiped from any advantage Remco can make it the TT.

"We’d been riding well all day, but we let ourselves get lulled to sleep by the calm in the peloton. It was our mistake, collectively." - Remco

Remco not taking responsibility for his blunder.
Sounds spot on to me, and sounds like he's taking his share. Would like to hear "it can't happen again" at the end of that statement, however.

I would certainly agree that moving forward, he needs to take charge of the race, his team, and his career, and get his and his team's heads out of their collective arse.

Good man Remco. who does that little *** think he is disturbing a 2x Olympic champ like that!
UPDATE:

Remco would like it to be known that he isn't pleased with some of the fake news coming out of the lamestream media, especially those who are 'Typing ***'

I agree, he the grand scheme of things nothig really changed with today. But I really don't like his demeanor, even in his interview

now, if he cannot take 40 seconds out of Pog and Vingo in a 33km flat ITT, he does not deserve to take yellow anyways
He will almost certainly lose more time on stage 2 and stage 4. He just can't keep with the aliens. So there is zero chance of him wearing yellow. He might get a top 10 this year if he doesn't throw in the towel like in the 2023 Vuelta.

It is only one way to respond to this bad start and that is for Remco to attack with menace tomorrow!Like i said in a earlier post, the team looked pretty physically strong today before they totally fell asleep in the end!The question is when to attack!

Personally i would let the other teams (Alpecin,UAE,Visma and Lidl) do all the work at the front of the peloton until the sprint with 54k to go. Put the whole team in front in the town of Etaples with 50k to go, after this there is a lot of hills(6-7) until the finish.

Use the team as a sprint train/launching pad for Remco’s attack and start with the weakest climbers to go steadily all out in this ordrer: Van Lerberghe,Merlier, Eenkhoorn, Schachmann, Cattaneo, Van Wilder .VPP will finish the team work on the steep 3rd category with 30k to go. Over the Top of this climb Remco need to attack and make it like a one day classic (LBL) sort of race. Ofcourse Pog,MVDP and Vinge will follow, but it probably will not be more than a handfull of other riders who can keep up with the pace.

Remco has to use these hilly stages to try and do som damage to the other 3rd place candidates before the big mountains. If it does not work and he looses time, so be it, atleast he tried and would be great for team morale if they suceed.

Apart from Mas and Jorgenson (and thats a stretch anyway), non of the other contenders for a podium gained time on him. So thats for sure an overly negative view. Should still be on of the favourites for the remaining podium spot.

And when he and two teammates tried to bridge a 20 second gap and escape the following group they blew up and sat in the field.
Meanwhile JV, UAE and Alpecin just rode a TTT until the sprint zone. Doubt those guys are as tired as the chasers.

Still pissed about it, hope he loses podium by anywhere between 1 and 38s to anyone in that first group. I found their response severely lacking in passion and competitiveness.

He also needs to leave that team this season, and hope both parties realise this now. It took me long enough.

The problem lies with Remco as much as with the team. The best time trialist in the world, shouldn't need to rely on team mates to make a split of a 40 rider group. No question.

I honestly wonder if Remco would fit better in another team. Sure, there are more resources at Red Bull for example, but personality wise?

Not sure what his timetrialing has to do with positioning. The riders were just lazy and thought they knew better. Staff has said multiple times it was dangerous there.

Personality wise I don’t know why he wouldn’t match with German strive for efficiency

That he should have the legs to be close enough to the front. With two fingers in the nose. Can you blame Van Wilder or VPP to not make the split? Not really. Remco? Yes.
