So, for those asking before: the hype in Belgium is starting to expand.
Vive Le Vélo, our traditional cycling talkshow during the Tour de France and in more recent years also the spring classics, will have a special Vuelta edition starting from tomorrow until Sunday. This has of course everything to do with Evenepoel being the potential successor to Johan De Muynck, the winner of the 1978 Giro d'Italia and thus the last Belgian to triumph in a Grand Tour.
You can imagine the desire and the pressure getting bigger by the day. I'm already annoyed by the stupid comments and the unfounded 'disappointment' or even hate Remco would receive by so-called sports lovers, in case he doesn't hold on to the overall victory. I once thought this kind of mentality was typical Flemish, but unfortunately I learned it's a despicable feature for people in general, also on here. No insults intended.
So I'm a bit worried about all the attention, but however I am too having my fingers and toes crossed to see Evenepoel prevail. The idea of a Belgian winning a GT, although being the n°1 traditional cycling country, has always been something of days gone by. I never experienced such a thing. It captures the imagination.
Go Remco! I'm proud of you either way, and your day will come sooner or later.
