Fun fact: If I haven't miscounted, Remco had 89 GT stages under his belt coming into this race. Tadej's 89th GT stage was stage 5 of the Tour 2023, where he got smoked by Jonas on the way to Laruns.

I'm still wondering why Schachmann is in this squad. This first week is when he should have been Evenepoel's man in the finals. He has been completely invisible. Today Van Wilder did a great job, let's hope his form is on point because with Cattaneo out, he might be the only one to moderately support Evenepoel.

He explained that, that he put that time training toward his climbing instead of his punch. We'll know in a few days, but if this turns out to be true, then it will likely be a wise decision. Him losing a few seconds here and there and missing out on bonis will very soon pale in comparison to performing a few minutes better in the mountains.
He's not going to perform a few minutes better in the mountains. I don't buy training to that effect, if you can't respond to rivals like today. As soon as Pog attacks on real mountains, he's out the back and will be in the order of last year.

Climbing on a mountain is different. Evenepoel will just set his own pace anyway

A pretty large part of that is gonna be down to how Vingegaard and Pogacar race against each other, as well as just the general difference in parcours.
Vingegaar and Pogacar will ride very aggresively against each other just like they did last year.

It's different. If they are even in the mountains, they will look to each other and Remco can take advantage of that. If they are not, Pogacar will probably put 2 minutes on Remco without much difficulty.

There could be a tactical deadlock if they are even but the pressure is on Vingegaard to attack. It's likely that during at least one Pyrenean stage Vingo will set a strong tempo without looking back (like on PdB) to try to tire Pogacar. Then Remco will be left behind.

It looked stupid but I think he did the right thing, calculated that he could gain a lot of time on his closest rivals and this was more prudent than mucking around and going for a small percentage win chance against Pogacar and others.

He should have just stayed at the front, not flapped his wings.

When he does that, hes hard to beat. Worst case he gets second or third today and the bonus.

He may be the most talented. But i hate to say it, the least intelligent (or his ds is dumber than a box of rocks)

That would be so stupid IMHO. He needs to attack but he cannot pace Pogacar like he did in PdB.

Vingo won't drop Pogi from his wheel with start/stop tempo. Visma knows that he needs to win w/kg battle. They can obviously try with Jorgenson attack or long-ranger combo with Wout but I'm sure at least once they will try PdB 2.0 (with their strong mountain doms). If they get beaten in this they will try other ways.

Remco should have sat on the wheels of Pogacar and Vingegaard and then lauched his sprint and then come what may. End of story.

The TdF is actually terrible for winning the W/kg cause everything is so shallow you need to be better by a comical degree to drop someone.

Can he hope to sustain watts never before? I don't think so. He was cooked today on a 2+ climb, not good.
Okay, now I think you’re just making things up. He didn’t lose an inch to Pog’s initial acceleration and looked comfortable doing so. Then he slowed the pace because he put himself in a tactically bad position in front. Just upthread you responded to comments with “let’s see” and “end of story.” Why keep upping the ante with even flimsier arguments?
