Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

Funny thing is, people seem to assume that someone would just work with Evenepoel on his wheel if he isn't contributing.
It could happen in a GT on a very specific situation, but generally nobody would work if Evenepoel doesn't contribute as well, so he can't just suck wheel even if he wants.
Huh? People know there are very few riders who will work with Evenepoel even if Evenepoel is doing 75% of the work. Roglic repeatedly refuses to take as much as 1 turn when he is with Evenepoel. How many turns did Skjelmose give him? Or Madouas? Or Lutsenko? At first a bit just to appease him and show good will, not to actually help. The only time he gets some turns is when he is in a group (like during WCC and ECC). And every time the others give him a turn, the tempo drops and they lose more time. so he has no choice but to drop them and he then comes a bit closer, while those he left behind lose extra minutes.

Nobody assumes what you believe because Evenepoel is not Roglic.

fair. I think, however, it is my experience on a discussion board that qualifiers and balanced talk rarely win out. I honestly don't think @Logic-is-your-friend ever said or even intimated that Pog was "terrible" pre-2024. I know many remco "fans" like him (and myself) who will grant you that overall, Pog was still the best cyclist pre-2024. but he was definitely human, lost and could get dropped. and pre-2024, other than a couple of instances, it was really only Remco who had made the long solo victory a thing (something that he did from the beginning in the Juniors and many thought he would never be able to replicate in the pros). So, while not wanting to put words in @Logic-is-your-friend's mouth, I think he is simply pointing that out.

And the reality is, without Pog, remco would have continued his long solo wins at both Worlds and Euros. The gap between him and the rest is really in line with previous remco solos.

the difference is pog as of 2024 suddenly was able to do the same and even more. that's all. leaving remco behind, yes, sometimes way behind. but to also judge their qualities merely on the last two years is also to ignore a very different reality that preceded.
He actually said 2022-2023 Remco would cook Pogacar on the flat and drop him on RaF. Like 2022-2023 Pogacar, the guy who dropped MVP in RVV is similar to Lutsenko or Madouas to be cooked on the flat... but in this thread, "logic is not present"

well we don't know of course.

but he dropped him on a hill at the 2021 euros...(when remco was still not fully back from Lombardia crash), so it's not really that difficult to surmise this could happen again before the 2024 transformation.

the only thing being pointed out was pog pre-2024 was very good, but also human and beatable. I will agree with all you pog fans that since the start of 2024, that is no longer the case.

I really do not understand what drives pog fans crazy about these data-driven observations? It's as if they cannot be satisfied with pog winning everything for two years, they feel obliged to make an alternate history where pog was always this. I hate to break it to you -- that is simply not factual.

1 - Remco being similar to Pogacar in long climbs (unipuerto stages)
2 - Remco could cook Pogacar on the flat (because he somewhat did it against Lutsenko or other lesser riders)

These takes are completely ridiculous. And you are talking about data? You try to act like you have an impartial opinion (you can't) but as we can see, you defend what is not defensible unless (for example) you also think Remco was as good as Pogacar in unipuerto stages with long MTF.
