So if what Staehelin is true then he would do it again, he has learnt nothing, I am reminded of Nicole Cookes interview after the Lance affair about how a young American friend of hers could not get a contract because he was unwilling to dope, it is the likes of Obree nor Rasmussen which should sympathise with.

Rasmussen has learned. He's learned that had he done a little more not to get caught the likes of you would be defending him as a verifiably clean hero against whom there are only conspiracy theories (well Danish versions of you anyway)

What's so difficult to understand about some athletes preferring to be multi millionaire heroes of the people and clean cycling than small.time.cyclists?

Of course, the difference is that, until it's established that the SOL should be waived in the case of Hesjedal and JV (and to be honest I have no idea why it wasn't in the case of JV, seeing how riders other than Armstrong were stripped of results that were out of the SOL), "hiding behind the SOL" is perfectly fine.

You seem overly defensive of a guy who should have absolutely no place in cycling. I don't mean to be rude but I'm not really sure how the Danish cycling public haven't worked that one out for themselves by now.

I'm saying that if you want balanced and well researched journalism you don't read BT, they specialise in the exaggerated, and the sensational, and happily pay for what they twist into tabloid headlines. Politiken and JP are where you find journalism.

Are you trying to say that Michael isn't smart and knows how to win by playing the system?

It really is cringeworthy to read some fellow danes still defending Riis at all costs claiming the journalists are part of a which hunt and Rasmussen is only looking for revenge. I guess it just shows how much impact confirmation bias has on peoples judgement.

From the first few snippets I've read, he actually portrays Riis more positively than I would've expected. Although it doesn't take much as I have to admit my faith in Riis is fairly limited.

I tried to do the right thing about Ryder some time ago. Just posted this on the JV & Ryder threads:

Now that this little secret is out, let me provide some insight into JV's actions and awareness.

I was well aware of Ryder's doping, and it was an open secret within the ranks in Canada. In fact, I was actually approached to start openly communicating this by the manager of a rival team.

This was well before Ryder rode for Phonak, but his exploits in the Dauphine on Phonak were laughable - when you knew what he was up to. Floyd's Tour nonsense provided the complete confirmation of what was going on within Phonak.

Fast forward to Garmin's interest in Ryder, before Ryder was signed, and the team's strong anti-doping stance.

With the help of a mutual friend, I contacted JV directly and advised him that it was a virtual certainty that Ryder had been a doper.

We had an open and frank discussion about the fact that it was well known within certain circles that Ryder was a doper.

To his credit, JV didn't dodge the issue for a moment.

I left that conversation with the strong belief that JV was true to his word.

He confirmed that he was "well aware of Ryder's past", and that they had discussed it. He also confirmed that Ryder had been provided with chapter and verse on the need to adhere to the team's policy.

My sense was that because they had both had an experience with Lance that JV's philosophy was likely to be successful with Ryder.

My guess is that if I spoke to JV about Ryder, I may not have been alone. Thus, he would also be well aware that if Ryder doped at Garmin and was caught, it would be a major embarrassment for him.

While I did parry a bit with JV when he did post on this thread, I am still convinced that he was telling the truth.

Whether Ryder ever resorted to old habits and was able to fool JV, Garmin's screens, and the UCI's testing (easiest of all), I cannot say.

Your point? What point.

Your initial post was about questioning the motives for Rasmussen (to write the book) and BT for publishing snippets to boost sales (as far as I know the book is published by Peoples Press which has no financial strings to BT). Politiken has also posted several snippets from the book as well.

My point being is that this is so typical for some danish fans instead of analyzing the available information they try to alter the context (in this case questioning the motives) in order to keep their existing beliefs.

However, at that time Rabobank was among the biggest sponsors. That meant that the team had a good relationship with the UCI, and hence the Rabobank doctor got together with the UCI doctor and came up with a solution.

- Doctor Leinders og doctor Mario Zorzoli, chief of the UCI medical department, had a meeting, in which they thoroughly discussed the case. When it was over, I was allowed to continue. No cause for alarm.

- Afterwards doctor Leinders told me what transpired. He used a dutch expression: 'We have butter on our heads'. They just slide off, the cases. Rabobank had a good relationship with the UCI; things had been taken care of in amicable fashion.

- You are the most protected rider in the TdF right now, he told me.

- They just acknowledged that you're allowed to break the rules.
