The ridicolous Contador vs Wiggins/Froome comparisons

Next year we can earn some money from the Tour. The bookies will have Wiggins as the favourite, and Contador will be at a handy price.
Contador is much underrated Time Trialist. Even in last years' final stage he rode a fantastic TT, when many thought he would lose time due to tiredness.
He has consistently delivered when it matters most.
He would be heads and shoulders above Wiggins in the mountains.

Wiggins as the favourite, where? In what evil place?

Maybe out of shape was too much, but people were misguided in their belief that Cancellara was 100% entering this race.

I agree, the prologue suited him too. He's in good enough shape to finish higher than half a dozen GC riders up the mountain on saturday though!

Of course the argument about who is the better time trialist can only be settled on the road, but the discussion has proved fruitful, for me at least. I learned that Albertico participated in thirty-three TTs (whose results have stood) between 2006 and 2010. In those thirty-three races, AC has had thirty top ten finishes, twenty-three top five, fifteen podiums, and has had eight wins, a pretty impressive record for a GC/non-specialist rider, no?

However, Wiggins, Evans, Froome and company are no slouches either> I look forward to the 2013 version of le Tour, and the 2012 version of la Vuelta a Espana might noy be too shabby either. I'm sure Froome will be ready to go, and I hope Pistol Packin' Pepe will be rady also.

Who is the better TTist, Wiggo without a doubt but that's not the point. The point is as you note Alberto is a pretty good TTist as well.

Don't forget that Contador made a fool out of a fully prepared Nibali in the Giro. That he eased away from Evans so many times uphill. Gaining +1 min with a serious attack. Even 1'30+ in not-topform TDF 2010 on guys like Vandenbroeck.
Now compare that to the Sky duo. Strong as they might seem, they can't shed Evans on a climb. Nibali lost what, 8 seconds on 200m sprint? And JvdBroeck attack on saturday put Froome and Wiggins on the limit...
Contador rode away from that same guy with ease when he wasn't in ultimate shape in TDF 2010. Who are we kidding?

Contador uphill is in another league than Wiggins or Froome. And I doubt he would lose more than 40 seconds on Wiggins in a topform in an ITT.

With some help maybe. Jose “Pepe” Martí recieved a life time ban in the US Postal case. When Contador was with Discovery and later Astana Marti was also there. Little bit more about Marti:

The third Spanish name is the more elusive Martí, a Spanish trainer who has also worked closely with several riders within Bruyneel’s teams, including Alberto Contador.

Little is known about Martí, who is not a licensed medical doctor. He rarely speaks to the media and refused a routine interview request from VeloNews three years ago during a race in Spain. According to the USADA documents, Martí started working at U.S. Postal Service in 1999, then the rebranded Discovery Channel team through 2007 and switched to Astana in 2008.

Floyd Landis, speaking in an interview with the German TV station ARD in 2011, accused Martí of supplying riders with drugs.

“Pepe was a supplier of drugs to U.S. Postal when I was on the team,” Landis was quoted on ARD. “I often used (Martí) to buy growth hormones, EPO and other doping products. He was not a coach. He was nothing more than a known drug dealer.”

There was never any public reaction from Martí, but Alberto Contador’s representatives acknowledged that he worked with Martí during his time at both Discovery Channel and Astana. Contador has not reportedly worked with Martí since 2010
