Watching last night my wife, who has zero interest or understanding of cycle racing, saw Tan and said who is this idiot and why are they letting him on the TV.

I actually think they could pick up anyone of the drunken fans on the side of the road and get more insightful commentary with more personality. They could just read his notes on camera as a start, he does.

is possible he is there to make tomo look good

Also have to say after years in UK and Aus listening to Paul and Phil really do feel like they are starting to lose it. so many mistakes, especially by Phil. think it is time he is quietly put out pasture.

Yeah the P&P Muppet show goes without saying.......Liggett has a mind like a wet cardboard box. If you saw an old animal in that kind of slow, prolonged and painful decline you'd put it out of its misery with a .303

Unfortunately Phil should retire. I will miss the "voice of cycling".
Paul holds it together but does go on about some riders, this year it's that Garmin domestique with a long name, you know the national champion of ????

Couldn't agree more re. KEENAN !!!
And sorry Anthony "The Finger" Tan, live you don't have it !!!!!!

ALLEZ THOMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the quotes of the day!!!!

Tan definitely talks s##t out of his a##e. He has no idea.

Phil & Paul's days are numbered. After getting sick of their mistakes and jabber i suggested on twitter to Stu Randall, SBS producer, to replace with keenan and macca this was his reply -

@lazy_dave @tobyshingleton matt and maca or matt and mcgrory have done flanders and giro for us. Its a long term plan for us.

Sounds promising!

"Its a long term plan for us." - How about we make it a short term plan.

The frustrating thing for me is that miss so much and cant pick the riders.

Im watching on a 52 inch plazma in HD and these blind old buuugers are commentating on 10 inch net books.

tomo is reportedly a keen cyclist and has long pushed SBS to improve its broadcasting of cycling. he has pull there. he's not the most incisive commentator, but at least it's on the telly. show some respect
But he never gets anymore knowledgeable. If he is such an enthusiast you would think that he would make an effort to improve his knowledge and yet he remains just as clueless as ever. It's a bloody mystery to me how someone can do something for so long and not get better at it.

I think the issue is that Tomo just isn't real bright. He has a few loose in the top paddock and a 30 second memory. I reckon SBS must send minders with him to make sure he arrives at the finish each day and keep him away from pointy things.

tan really annoys me, he is meant to be an expert but has no idea.

He seriously makes me cringe.

Respect that tomo is the driving force behind the coverage, even if he has no idea about cycling.

Tomo doesn't need to appeal to any of you, you'll watch regardless. If the viewership is to grow the coverage needs to appeal to people with nfi about cycling. You'll find that many of his questions and comments appeal to the beginner market. If it wasn't for tomo, love him or hate him, you'd still be watching 30min highlight packages. David McKenzie is an ex doping elitist tool who only has a passion for milking the sport for all it's worth. That's a guy i'd like to see off air. Almost everybody else you see on air after the stage is doing it for free (obviously not tomo) out of passion for the sport. I agree that it's time to see keenan move ligget aside, he's past his best.

********. If there wasnt a commercial case for SBS to Air TdF live they wouldnt do it. Given Tomos gormless persona I cant imagine him successfully strongarming anyone at SBS. Evidently others behind the scenes saw value in it. He has managed to ride the wave nicely :)

PS. worst case scenario i'd be watching Eurosport on Fox and still bagging Tomo :p

If I hear Tan say "prognosis" one more time, I will be forced to bash my head repeatedly against a brick wall until I knock myself out. Seriously, on last night's coverage, I heard that freaking word escape from his mouth 8 times before I stopped counting in a fit of rage.

I am no longer living in Oz and don't have to suffer through the SBS coverage any longer. I'm not sure if they are doing it this year, but Matt Keenan's half hour or so of solo mid-stage commentary before the switch to the P&P feed was monotonous. The guy really knows his stuff, but someone pointed out in a thread a year or two ago that he needs a sidekick to generate some banter and a bit more liveliness. At the time, I thought that he just didn't have the personality and that wouldn't help. But I've changed my mind now. I've heard him doing some pre/post-stage reports on SEN 1116 and Matt reveals a nice turn of phrase and sense of humour when he has someone with whom to interact. I've also heard him doing calls of sprint finishes on the track, and he's not bad there too, but certainly not in the league of Phil back in the day.

Except that THey dont carry the Tour in Australia thanks to SBS.... you end up getting a great commentary service for all other races during the year and then being depressed during the Tour

I'm loving this thread! Moses type leading the people out of the wilderness! That's gold! Tan looks like the product of the copulation of ET and Rose Porteus Hancock! Bahaha...so true!

I'm interested to know how many people here hop by the cyclingcentral website, now or in the past, plus have you read the blogs Tan and Tomo drop? Do you write in a similar fashion on that site like you do here? Do you find yourself censored frequently?

I've found that SBS websites are a travesty matching their tv coverage in terms of hopelessness. Pathetic comes to mind. Worse, the July warriors seem to love these two clowns. They're not going away anytime soon. If you are in management at SBS and read this, you should be ashamed of yourself. They are hopeless. Incompetence that simple can no longer be ignored...Tomo is getting worse and has only come away unscathed in my eyes this year because of the ineptitude presented by Tan's emergence onto the tv screen. I feel like going out and clubbing a baby seal everytime his mug appears on screen.

Right you are, I am pretty sure this wasnt the case last year? I had Foxtel at our old place and watched it in preference to SBS.....unless that was Giro coverage.

I've looked at Cycling Central a few times over the years and it looks like a very half hearted effort at best. I'll be sure to check in from time to time to give them a stir though.

Tan's print stuff has always been tripe, but his evening cameos are worth staying up for. I can't wait to hear his "analysis" tonight.....so bad its almost good.

I am convinced that the punters who dont take issue with the SBS coverage (including the muppets) are either asleep, hard of hearing, or watching for cooking tips. Either that or they think they are watching an art house movie involving cycling.

Tan has been a call in, used because Rupe or Phil are awol somewhere else and Macka is getting interviews. He's not a tv personality so other than Randall or Mike the Cameraman, who else they got over there on short notice? At least Tan tries, he's got some knowledge but yeah, he isn't seeing the same race as me. Then again stick any one here up there and you'd get the same amount of people complaining.

Also, as someone else alluded too, they can watch very little of the race themselves. Its either on a laptop following their own stream or on the screen provided for ALL media. Its a tough job that people need to understand before they criticise.

Tommo has worked hard behind the scenes imo, prove that he hasn't.

Agree about Keenan and McGory. Sooner they bring them in to commentate the better.

I can only assume Tan won a competition, there is no other way he would be on TV. He knows nothing about cycling, just parrots what journalists have said. He stammers and stutters and squeaks when he is excited. He brings nothing to the broadcast at all.

Can't say I look forward to Tan's 'analysis' in whatever shape or form it spews forth from his mouth or tongue.

The punters...I've lost count of the number of people whom I've been told by relatives watch cycling in July only to see the French countryside. So sad. I've talked to some guys my age who watch cycling whilst out drinking...I think they like the sport part, but aren't ardent fans. They possess a decent amount of knowledge to know the names and faces of the big guys, why a peloton reacts in a certain situation, but lack real depth in their knowledge base to appreciate the tom foolery commentators in Australia provide in droves nightly. Basically they are sports fans, like most Aussies. They take football and cricket seriously and that is it. The rest/remaining sports get fleeting glances seasonally when their favourite teams are tanking or not playing.

SBS diehard fans all love Cuddles...more than ACF94. That is telling.

I've been there a few times, every time i post on a blog it is either not posted/censored or I get 100 thumbs down because the people there cannot accept anything other then evans love.

I really dislike the blogs there. Even scott sunderland has written some cringe worthy blogs, I don't understand why people like this guy, I do not.

Tomalaris and tan...don't get me started.

Rumours were going around earlier in the tour that Tomo is getting the sack from host.

Tan should be wearing the electric blue suit. He lost my vote when he put on the houndstooth check shirt. He does have beautiful effeminate lips tho, like a ripe strawberry.

He has panache. His prognostic should not be conflated with a proctologic exam. Similar, but not same.

He has panache. Everything is so grave and poignant. Every observation so significant and every insight so acute.

Tan has panache and and satorial style without peer.

Lots of panache.

Tomalaris on the other hand, he is a muppet who would be better off swapping roles with Gabriel Git.

Good point, i wonder how many panaches there will be in tonights stage. I am thinking this stage will be particularly panache laden, maybe 3 solid panaches.

He certainly sees cycling in four dimensions though, so i expect a lot of insight.

Oh say it ain't so! You jest, no? I'd complain to SBS but they won't listen to me. I've been imitated/mimicked on their site before and they did nothing.

Say what????

I stand corrected. Just took a look at some of the quotes on the site today. Man, there are some major Evans haters. We are talking guys pulling over 50 plus red arrows/thumbs with the joke of an approval system they run. All of it (critique of Cadel) is unwarranted. He's the one GC guy who can hold his head high after last night. By bigger Evans fans I will make a distinction, you can name every damn person on his team and their strengths/weaknesses plus recent results, these people are 'blind' followers barracking for the Aussie through patriotic allegiance. The ones who if you put every rider in the same jersey they couldn' tell you who Evans is, despite that chin of his.

This is what I was looking for. Here I was thinking I was the only one. I've never gotten 100 thumbs down though. Some of my comments years back upset the softies jumping on in July that I had a few imitators...forced me to change my moniker and pretend I'm from a more Siesta oriented location. That's fooled some of the people there as well...they thought I was for real with my location. I stopped going near the site simply because of the blogs...they really are terrible. Heck, the new website is so evil my browser and virus software think it's attacking my computer. If that isn't a sign from above I don't know what is.

Drinking from the poisoned chalice no doubt or eating from the vomit filled cauldron!:p I'll pass on eating anything Tomo can come up with. Period.

Liked the rest of your thoughts on Tan. Do you reckon the lips are a product of botox or just nifty gene sequences? Was I the only one who heard Tomo's rambling about drugs last night and thought it was highly ironic given what had just taken place?
