It is easy to be critical of Armstrong now that the dam has been broken.

I do think that Landis when he first spoke out was very badly treated by CN. It was only when people realised that the Feds etc were taking him seriously that the media started to treat him seriously.

And like I say - where is the tougher, more questioning coverage about the climbing performances in the Vuelta? There are plenty of things going on in cycling at the moment that are ripe for the promised tougher, more critical, questioning coverage, but so far no sign of the promised improved journalism.

while i'm in full agreement with the thurst of your post, fact is that bad weather didn't sell back then and doesn't sell at present either.
perhaps the best we can hope for is for media to STOP coverage (a la German television). I still think that's where you can hit the facilitators the hardest.

That's tricky, because as of right now there's little to substantiate our suspicions, since the watt numbers seem to be below that magical human threeshold where everything is rainbows and sugar and unicorns that are members of Bike Pure. I wouldn't want cycling coverage to focus on relatively groundless insinuations.

However, there *is* important stuff that's substantiated and has hardly been brought up. The Martí/Contador link, for example. The current Riis/Fuentes story, which I don't think is being pressed hard enough by anyone (for once, I think the Clinic is doing a good job there). The long list of positives at Katusha and the conflict of interests with that kind of teams, like Astana or Leopard, which have too much to do with their countries and federations. The allegations that it was Unzue who sent Mancebo to Fuentes. All of that needs to be explored.

Yup, look at what a fool Pistorious has made of himself and the paralympics, by going to CAS for admittance to Olympics then *****ing about competitors unfair prosthetics.

Pistorious just cost himself his future more or less.

Paralympics was never to be about winning. It was supposed to be about competing. It has soured it for me, when i see the print medal tables. Who give a sh!t about the winning it is the overcoming of the big hurdle to compete that makes them all winners. The media are making a balls of reporting it.

I want to see the media go after Riis, then Hans-Michael Holczer about Rodriguez, then Unzue about Valverde performing the way he performed with Fuentes etc

I also want to see questions being asked of sponsors. Ask Trek what they think of their cheating poster boy? Ask specialised what they think of the allegations an evidence of Riis?

I aint holding my breath.

I don't think I can claim credit.

I did think this was an interesting comment.

With the press it was a very strange relationship. Sometimes I felt that some of the guys were part of this T-Mobile luxury travelling, coming to camps, staying in 6 star hotels and being given free telephones. They loved the sport and they were critical sometimes but not super critical. There wasn’t an agreement but there was a strange relationship and no one really asked if something happened.”

“They’d ask me about someone like Roberto Heras and I’d give a response but there was always a way out and you were made of Teflon with some universal answers. With the fans…. I heard the interview with Phil Liggett and I listened to him and it was typical case where someone doesn’t want to admit to believe or that he admired the wrong person. He was too close to Lance.

It is easier to talk about the past critically than it is to be critical about the present. There are lots of current questions out there that need to be asked and kept on asking. The press shouldn't allow themselves to be bullied by Sky etc when it comes to asking tough questions.

But this is a good article - more of the same please.

This article by Benson today definitely has a different slant to it....Mrs Murphy seems to have had an influence...bravo !

Hopefully the tides a turning.

I like his dig at Schleck, wonder does he include Millar.

But I wouldn’t be happy if I’d lied and then confessed something that wasn’t the whole truth and say I’m an anti-doping crusader. That’s even worse than shutting up and saying nothing. For me that’s the worst because you play with the sport

:)

Remember Millar and Wiggins criticising Landis when he came out with his allegations in 2010. I want someone to pull them up on all this and see what they have to say for themselves now. All they did was ridicule Landis at the time.
When asked about his position on Armstrong's ban, this is what Millar said:
And I do have an opinion on Lance that I'll talk/write about it in the near future, like everybody I'm trying to digest it fully.

It's so big that I can't simply respond immediately, especially on Twitter, I need a lot more than 140 characters.
Gee, he's taking long to write that piece. He couldn't work as a journalist.

I'd like to hear what Camendzind has to say. The guy informed the surprise controllers he'd test positive before they took the sample - then he retired.
Indeed. He refused to name his supplier for fear of retribution.
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/camenzind-fined-for-not-naming-supplier
Camenzind refused to testify, saying he did not wish to endanger himself and claimed that he could be arrested in another country if he told what he knew.

Great thread and some awesome posts.

Jorg J demonstrates the irony of fully complying with UCI "expectations" of frank confession.

Great points on Federations/States involvement in Pro cycling and the enormous conflict of interest. As I, and others, have indicated, Federations from UCI down have no place in testing/regulation enforcement at all.

As for hard questions: What about Pat's flip flops and abrupt reversals. That man would have no credibility if his apparent two facedness was generally known!

Millar upholding omerta. Not gonna go against current UCI while they are still in place. They might have a few of his samples up their sleeves ;)

I like what Jorge says about the likes of Millar.

I thought about your thread when I read the article today. The quote that stood out the most was this……

“It was easy to lie to an extent. Not to my family but to the press and the fans.

Who or at what level is this type of treatment given out? Is this given to the “High School Student” Daniel Benson? I doubt it. People like Phil, Paul, Bob????

How about the discrepancy with someone like Frankie A.? I doubt he was asked to come hang out at the hotels and was given free phones? While Frankie was or still is employed by OLN / Versus or whom ever it was did they have “rules” or “guides” for him and his questions? I imagine that USPS/DISCO/ASTANA/ (aka team PorkSkinz) gave out an indication as to what questions they would not even acknowledge etc.

Good article today regarding the amerta in the peleton. I think some journalists are asking the hard questions.

I think a very obvious reason for CN's poor form reporting on earlier years can be found in two places: Anthony Tan's linkedin profile, and Anthony Tan's twitter feed. The guy is an absolute joke of a "journalist", and spent a lot of time here. Yesterday he was peddling the line that Hamilton's going to profit greatly for 'writing a book about Armstrong'.

Anthony Tan lambasted a local conti team here in Aus, pooh-poohing them for being vocal about not being selected for the local PT race, saying they were essntially crap.

Fast forward 2 years and that conti team was smacking the Asian PT races for 6. Man mixed metaphors for breakfast but anyway.

Then you see him and Mike Tomolaris talking to each other about cycling on the TV. Seriously. It makes me cringe.

No respect for Tan at all. I reckon half his posts are diatribe deliberately intended to create polemic or his page hits would take a dive.

Yuck.

Keenan does a great job.

I tried to make a search in CN forum. There was a random question
"Has Lance Armstrong ever won the Tour de France?". I answered "no", but search engine replayed that answer is not correct. Maybe it is time to change it.

If Kimmage is unemployed

Here is an interesting test of how 'tough' CN wants to be.

Kimmage as per this quote is currently unemployed

Unfortunately, the only action they take is against people like me. I’m currently unemployed…anti-doping is not profitable and it’s not popular, and it’s pretty appalling that I’m deemed to be the problem.

http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/1...rue-winners-of-those-Tours.aspx#ixzz25bbqlVex

Now, if Benson is as good as his word in promising new tougher journalism then shouldn't he be on the phone to Kimmage?

I'd love to know Kimmage's thoughts on the Vuelta.

Benson talks about how omerta breakers weren't supported. Well here is a chance for CN to support an omerta breaker by getting them to write for CN.

Anthony Tan, at best, is a tool. However, it's really much worse than that.

Good news is he's largely irrelevant.

I share your low opinion of Anthony Tan.

I hope Frankie Andreu could be one of the voices to replace Ligget/Sherwen because he calls it so well.

Ligget/Sherwen.

ITV4 - if you're reading this, get rid of them. I don't care if you take the feed from a studio in London (a la Eurosport back in the day) just give those two the heave-ho.
