**** day...right now the last thing I want to do is see the Tour, even though a rest day is coming up. Right now I want to skip cycling until San Sebastian. He can still top-5, but that feels like a loss right now, and apparently he also cried at the finish line, so he probably feels that way too. First the local football club lost 2-3 to the defending league champions after leading 2-0 at half time, and now this.

Thibaut had a chance to win Le Tour, now it's pretty much gone. But it's still a long way to Paris. If this is his "bad day", it could have been worse I suppose. Others will have a bad day. Tibopino can still podium. It starts with a decent ITT, take time back on some of the guys in front of him.

Well, Tibo's Tour hopes took a bit hit today. I'm not going to say all is lost, because there's still a big part of the race to come. But winning will be hard.
He still has an excellent shot at the podium if he is one of the three best uphill, which I suspect. So that's something at least. But of course we all wanted him to win and this is a *** way to lose time

That is what hurts the most. He has ridden perfectly until today, and with his successful raid two days ago resulting in a buffer to Thomas, I seriously believed the last 48 hours that he had a really serious shot at winning le Tour. Not a favorite, of course, but with a half-decent chance of snatching victory from SKY/INEOS. And that is more than we have had to endure most of this decade. Podium is not out of reach, but I believe it is conditional on, as you say, gain time on his competitors. And hope that it stays at this one bad day

It sucks. I had high hopes before the race and after his great showing in the first 9 days I really thought he could win. Hopefully Tibo can recover both physically and mentally and start again on Wednesday with new motivation.

He's now 1m21s behind Thomas in GC. I think, with the ITT coming, he can pretty much forget about winning the TDF.

On the other hand, 1m21s isn't even that bad considering there has already been a TTT and one MTF. Other years, he might have lost more time by the time the real mountain stages start.

Podium is still possible. Hopefully, next time Thomas crashes, the peloton won't hold back either.

Naessen said to Bardet: 'likely cross wind section coming, just stay close to me'.
FdJ don't have a Naessen. They just somehow fail to have someone like that to avoid sh*t like this happening. And if you know you don't have such a guardian, you'd certainly better make sure you stay in the front part of the bunch.

He won't lose more than 1 minute in the TT. Marseille TT 2017 Lands lost 51sec. This TT is much hillier and exact distance. I'm hopeful with the climbing coming up too. If he's the strongest in the mountains he can win.

My fear is he'll now be pushing himself beyond the red line earlier than planned and may end up imploding in week 3 like TJVG in the 2015 TDF. Today was absolutely crushing psychologically. Objectively, the last slot on the podium should still be a possibility, but realistically maybe not so much.

Join the club! I've had a **** day too and seeing Thibaut Pinot losing time like that today has just compounded it.

I was actually really enjoying this race up until now too. But let's not entirely give up hope yet. Still a long way to go.

ITT day, i'm turning 51, so I hope that my present is #51 having a great day :) .

The problem is that Ineos won't let Tibo (or anyone for that matter) pull a Carapaz. And as stunned as I am now, the early Tour Pinot is really strong. Maybe he won't derail the train, but against the others, he can do it. And who knows: Thomas and/or Bernal can have bad luck too.

It sucks but it's not the end of the World either. Tibopino is still in it. Now he can't hold back. But he needs to be smart and not do stupid stuff. A good ITT, taking time on some on the Tourmalet, and he's close with brutal days in the Alps remaining.

Van Aert (Jumbo), Lampaert (DQS), Naesen (AG2R) all said or implied in pre-race interviews to be weary of crosswinds. This was not some incredible well-kept secret. I know Pinot doesn't have "a Naesen", but doesn't he have a DS that is not a complete idiot? Their entire team (i mean the entire 28 men squad) consists of 70% French riders, only one (subpar) Dutch rider, no Belgians or riders that have a history riding for Dutch or Belgian teams. Their entire staff, from DS all the way down, are all French as far as i can tell. There is little to no "foreign" expertise present. Hardly any classics specialists. As if the team is happy with this complacency, not really looking to improve. Not looking further than what 's in front of them.

I can't help it, but this is the feeling i get from this team. Maybe i'm way off, but that's the impression i get. It amazes me that they went to see a foreign specialist to help them with their TTT. Maybe there is hope.

...I see the point, agree to some extend, but the Birdsong thread also mentions that roundabout, and I have to watch tape to see for myself. It looks according to an interview (I believe in l'Equipe) that I read, that Pinot lost like 40-60 spots by taking the left side of the roundabout. And there was a gap. If so, that's not so much bad positioning, you can blame bad recon, team advice not given, or plain bad luck, being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
