I agree that he seems the fastest sprinter after phillipsen at the moment. Very impressive. However I also have the feeling he is too bad with the hills to win one of the classics..
Rewatch last year's Wevelgem finale. Or look at the 2022 results.

A compliment Merlier certainly deserves:

Aesthetically, Tim is one of the finest sprinters to watch. You can see his leg speed in perfect balance with raw power, because he rarely swerves or moves his body too much. It's a bit comparable to Italian greats Cipollini and Petacchi, although Merlier's kick displays a bit more force. He's like a slingshot or a catapult. Nokere today was a fine example.

It's kinda impressive how Merlier seems to find another gear when he sees Cameron and his son at the finish :D

Yes , this is why merlier is probably my favourite sprinter at the moment. The sprint he did on nokere korse yesterday, was the kind of sprint that I would see as a kid from pettachi, Sagan, Cavendish and make me think that racing was the coolest thing in the world.

A great win for Merlier and this Giro proved the doubters wrong that said he couldn’t keep it together after the first week. Hopefully he goes to the Vuelta as well, last year was terrible for him missing all the GTs.

The Vuelta parcour is far from good for flat sprinters.

Without Remco’s ambitions he would always be selected for the Tour. Weird that such a sprinter only has 1 win in the Tour, but he doesn’t even get a chance the last years.

What a season he’s having.
And it was the only sprint he contested, the rest of the race was for Philipsen.

His choice of teams leaves alot to be desired. Going to QS meant he was behind Jakobsen and Remco, which makes it hard to go to the TDF. He;s wasted part of his career.

Best sprinter of the season, top 3 over the last 5 years too. An international champion's jersey to celebrate. Congratulations Tim.

Sadly some here think he is a dirty sprinter, while in fact he is a gentleman. It's true, he had two weird sprints this season, of which the Groenewegen crash was really silly. That doesn't take away his fair style over the years and certainly his stellar performances recently.

Even with the lesser focus, the Wolfpack remains an authority in sprints. And they have Merlier (and Van Lerberghe) to thank for.

He is underrated. He has won twice as many sprints as Philipsen in races both started (12 vs 6). With Mvdp in support it could have been more.

And got rid of the talk that he can’t win after the first couple days in a grand tour.
