In fact. How does that contradict my thoughts?
Well you made it sound like the GC riders are just taking a stroll through the italian countryside and letting MvdP win. Perhaps a few of them are, but the vast majority has been distanced or doesn't have the legs to attack.

This is an epic ride, it shouldn't be put into perspective.

Because races were that much more fun when Sky or Ineos just pulled on the front every day.
I guess thats a valid point. I don't know, just not very engaged by races where one or both of these guys take part because they are always better. And that's not fun to watch. Road cycling is supposed to be (and usually is) more than a coronation of the most physically and genetically gifted human beings.

The battle for second place is fun though.

I've been trying to find a reason for him not letting Wellens go and the only thing I can come up with is that Wellens at some point denied him a stage win or something in the past, but I don't remember it.

very similar to today :p

Of course not, but having lost 20+minutes places him of no concern to the overall contenders. By contrast, being in the GC race CHANGES EVERYTHING and I assure you MvdP in this stage race would not be getting away with this otherwise. Thus my let's gain some perspective.

Pogacar is a damn good rider. He could get relatively close to vdp. That’s what separates the best GC riders, the ability to recover from a hard effort. And wout is clawing back time too...
