The doped (and caught) Master's riders I've had the occasion to race with seem to share some insecurities that borders on sociopathy. A few that I competed with that got busted were reported by their region's riders and officials. That could speak to the blatancy that this new guy exercised. It can't be for the money and it's definitely not for the lady admirers...they just look older and scarier than normal skinny riders.
Sad situation for those that cheat if they feel "winning" is that important but in the US; it seems to an extent anything is justified if you win. It's not like our culture invented that attitude but it seems prevalent and indicative of insecure narcissism.
I agree with Cookster's call that it's a tiny fraction, I have ridden and raced in communities in California, Texas, Colorado, NYC and North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and in each place there is a vibrant racing \ club community were being top dog is pretty significant.
Rides in San Diego and Los Angeles have a pro sprinkle from time to time. When Chris Horner is around you would think that the club ride is the World Championships.
To * win* a club race in Boulder or Dallas, Austin is really important to some people.. I can definitely see how guys are tempted to juice. To me it's just an extension of hair loss or guys who carry Viagra with them everywhere they go.. Just in case.
If you are 40, 50 or older and you are getting gassed to the gills to win something that involves either no prize money or not enough to cover your expenses for a few days. Silly.
I don't get angry about it, instead I feel sadness. Federations can't assume anything, how much money should a race promoter or federation earmark for drug testing guys who are 40, 50+? That's just sad that it's even a thing..
It always brings me back to the deep, deep disappointment, sadness when adults had kids cheating in Little League Baseball! Getting fake documents and children rehearsing to lie about their age.. The level of contempt is just ugly. It wouldn't be any better if millions were in the balance but when it's just pride or your lack of self worth, to me it's just worse. We have more and more problems with parents in sports, fighting, yelling insults and threatening umpires and other officials.. Knocks all the goodwill out of masters stuff and grand fondo not so serious attitude.
