If Atkins would have had to fight the 5 Kenda dudes, they would have all gotten their butts kicked. He's a full grown man, those boys are kids straight out of the Montessori School.

If you are going to talk smack, be realistic and aware of who you are talking to. Known Jon a long time and I would never talk to him like that. He is over 6 feet tall and weighs a lot more than me, I would expect to get crushed. Kids these days can be clueless

Bad mouthing the "smack talking Montessori kids" by talking smack. Pretty easy to guess what your agenda is:(

Is this common amongst you and your long time aquaintenances?

Smack-talking 200#, 40-something "crit monsters" on their "Clydesdale" ZIPP 808's out to show them puny pros what reall aggro racin is all about.

Funny how so many of them never seem to show up when the road turns uphill, or has more than one "stage".

I am sorry you have this take on things but I respect that you have your own opinion.

Since I was not there and I did not witness this it is all just speculation based on statements made by the two of them.

Even still you can’t possibly be so naïve and think that you can just go spouting off to anyone do you? Try that in traffic on the freeway and see how far that attitude will get you before someone pulls out some form of retaliation. IT is just not very smart to go around verbally assaulting folks. I am not trying to say it is without some type of consequences but it will happen.

Your post comes off like you are trying to school everyone about justice and right and wrong.

If someone rides me into the shoulder and then starts to call me out with his posse then do not be surprised if I do not end up “WHOOPING THAT FELLERS A$$”

isn't Howe's strong suit.

http://velonews.competitor.com/2012...-speed-week-puts-kendas-isaac-howe-out_216880

Atkins, it seems, was demanding an apology. “And then he started threatening me,” Howe said. “And then I made fun of him after that.”

oooh! Good thinking!

“I think that people in races, they get angry,” Howe said. “And I’m used to that. I would be lying if I said I didn’t participate in that. But the reason why you don’t act on the people who make you angry in the race is the potential for hurting other people,” he said. “I brushed it off. I don’t have time to waste with petty apologies in a bike race… It was out of this world. It was unbelievable.”

He doesn't have time for petty apologies in a bike race, but does have the time to make fun of an extremely agitated, big guy who feels he was wronged and makes a big point of confronting Howe?

ROFL. You are clueless. This is the USA Pro Criterium series, not a hill climb event...so get your facts straight. There are no "climbs" is the USA Pro Crit series...duh.

So the "kids" should probably not be fooling around and instigating things with the "crit monster". But even the poor kid who took the worse of the incident says he is OK with some "contact" and it is part of racing. And, he also encourages and participates in "sh&t talk" during races, as he clearly admits to doing with his opponent that day.

So, when you get rolled up on after all your sh&t talk, don't go crying to the authorities, scream and proclaim you are filling lawsuits and such and how he tried to "kill me".

And by the way, there are plenty of 40 something Pros in the peloton, do we need to go down the list, that are still at the highlest level of the sport. So you sound like a bigger fool with your post.

Enjoy your day kiddie!

No, Howe being stupid doesn't justify Atkins' behavior. If Howe's allegations are true, Atkins should be banned and criminally charged. You can't go crashing people, because they're db's.

I'm not saying that Atkins should not get punished for crashing him, but I am saying that with Howe's attitude, he should be thankful that so many others before Atkins have been as restrained as they were. He's luckier than he realizes. That's all.

Both the idiots should be banned.

Howe should be banned because he baits bears. If he wants to bait bears, he should do it alone in the wilderness where he is not endangering cyclists engaged in sportsmanlike behavior.

Atkins should be banned because he is a bear and bears have no role in bike races. He should hang out in the woods and eat berries.

Fiddling over who is righter or wronger is a waste of time. These two angry jerks, together, screwed up a race and put others at risk.

Mutual combat, I say. And there is no room for violent combat on a bike at high speed.

I think you missed the point. Like macRoadie I find crit riders to be similar to quarter horses, high strung. Whereas riders that climb even halfway decently tend to be less high strung. Totally my opinion though. I could be wrong.

A side note about the series.... What is the value of winning the USA Pro Crit Series overall? Zero. Nothing. Races pay a hefty premium for the privilege of being in the series and none of that money makes it back to the riders.

Finally, my estimation is the real story is somewhere in the middle of the two told. I find both characters in the story disreputable to the point that "Two wrong don't make a right" fits well. Both are lucky worse things did not happen because of their bad behaviour. For once, I agree with MarkvW.

Oh ok! No one is asking you to fiddle btw. You have enough on your plate defending Armstrong.

Don't you think you are mixing up your concepts just a bit? If two blokes mouth off during a race and then afterwards they go toe to toe and one gets the **** kicked out of him, then no ones going to cough up their flat white over that, and hell we might even feel happy that an old dude slapped some young jerk around.

But if a bloke does his nanna and brings someone down on purpose thats just an old git going mental. If he was in his car it would be road rage and he would be charged. Stuff the he said/she said guff - this comes down to how far Aitkins went over the line, not whether he went over the line. There is a big difference between defending your position in the bunch and your brain exploding.

I agree with this completely. Obviously the "he had it coming" crowd fees differently and continues to drone on.

I dont know how it goes down in the states, but by the sounds of it there is a bit of a rollerball mentality in your crits. In Australia, the European pro's seem to be able to race crits all summer with the locals with few issues.

An intentional takeout is incredibly rare. I've never actually seen this happen, ever. That's why this is such a big deal. I've seen fights in the parking lot after a race. I see a lot of smack-talking in crits, which is par for the course. I see wheels chopped intentionally in almost every crit, but it's done in a manner than guys just give up the spot. The physics is pretty simple on this one. If someone hits your front wheel, you're gonna crash. That's why I find all of the nonsense about the size of the one dude to be funny. My 11 year old niece could take down a 200 pound rider. Any rider can intentionally crash out any other rider if they want to, so I'm not sure why the keyboard vigilantes keep focusing one this part of it.

Yeah, he should have just said "sorry, dude", even if he wasn't at fault. That's what I'd have done. But I'm not a crit specialist and Howe is, so who knows what goes on in their heads? As far as Howe having fault just for talking smack, though? That's just stupid. It's not a lawn bowling social, and sometimes tempers flair. It take a whole different type of d-bag to assault someone and endanger others because of it. It's not Howes' fault if some dude can't control his emotions.

As far as the poster who described it as "he said/he said" situation, I'm under the impression that there were more than 2 people at the race.

I think that's correct.

I think it is because of the nature of the racing. Long climbs in road races ... I find these more 'calm' (albeit painful). Crits are crazy sh*t man ... seriously for adrenaline junkies.

If you've ever raced in a pro crit you know what I mean. It is just f*cking crazy sometimes!

Nah, I'm done. To sum up, there's a difference between jawing stupidity at someone and intentionally causing a bike crash.

Now you're free to continue your regular schedule of defending the indefensible.

Every new Cat4 thinks he's on a "team" and working for his bro to help him get upgrade points. Yet they never think much of their own chances. Sad, eh?

Cat 3/4's definition of being a great teammate: Blocking.

Things heard at the racetrack. "Yeah... I blocked so he was able to get/stay away. Our whole team blocked. I'm a good blocker. I'll block as necessary for my boys, ya know. If you get away, I'll block.

Then...We Won! Our Team Won!! I was blocking All Day, so we could get the Win.

Let's split prize money and do this again next weekend!!!!

Not funny. Just normal. These are the non-dopers, busy with life, making more money than you, but still kicking your tail in flat crits.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Those Fa(s)t Masters still beat me at crits, but they don't bless us with their entry fees for the uphill events or stage races. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Note these are The Real Bike Racers, not you. They're not doping, hence still racing into their 50s. Sorry they're so experienced, efficient, smart and still fast.

Sounds like you should stick to the hills, Mr. Youthful Slow Guy. Meantime, get comfortable with the best elders always beating you and your spoiled ilk. While they're racing off the couch with a hangover.

Bud Light presents: Real Men of Genius

Today we salute you, Mr. Old Chubby Flatland Crit Racer.

Your efforts to avoid an inch of ascent are an inspiration to bums everywhere that they too can drink the champagne of victory by avoiding work.

Instinctively, you shy away from any event for which you are ill suited [or would require an end to morning stops for sausage and egg McMuffins.]

With age comes wisdom. Life is not about aiming high. It's about achieving low so you can look down on those who aimed higher but did not make it. And with climbs the chance of not making it is too damn high.

Should you avoid the Bratwurst? Should you train more? Of course not. Why? Because you are Mr. Old Chubby Flatland Crit Racer. Your experience tells you how little you can do and still hang with the pack on Saturday [providing there are no hills.]

So crack open an ice cold Bud Light, mister, and know that the spoiled youngsters are thankful for the wide load crit masters funding the sport. [No, we couldn't race without you.]

Bro...I take offence to a couple points. First, I prefer to to only ride hard on Sundays. Secondly, I drink Twisted Pine Hoppy Boy- not Bud Light. Other than that...........best post I've read in a long time. I would rather get my but kicked racing uphill and laugh at myself when reviewing the lack of power numbers, than pretend I am something that I was. I am a firm believer that what people choose to do with their free time defines them the most closely......what they see when they look in the mirror.....that is a different story.
