I think he's so good at what he does. Aiming at GT sucess would most likely mean he would lose some of his current and broad abilities, and he'd no longer be a contender for time trials, Ardennes and even one-week races at the same time, which would be a shame. He's about one of the best all-rounders there is, why ditch a certain and bright future of success for GT focus, that may lead nowhere.
If he doesn't try he will never know like Cance, Martin. Wiggins tried and became a sensation. The problem is he is not interested nor does he have the confidence of trying for GC.

so can he do a nozal or at least a peter velits?

i hope he can hang on

Well he's said that he'll try but he doesn't give a *** about getting 10th place in GC, so as soon as he loses red I imagine he'll take 20 minutes

As long as he hangs on to a top 5 position or is in striking distance to reach it with a tt win, I guess he tries to archive it.

Well it is an uneven year and the Vuelta. Time for another surprise winner ;)

Won't happen!

Nah it won't happen. But leaders jersey for some time is nice. Hope for the ITT win and another stage win. That would be cool. GC is only important if top 5.

He should go for it as long as he is still well placed though, because the worlds ITT course doesn't suit him that much this year. Too much flat, he needs a more hilly ITT. In flat itt's he's still top, but other riders are more danger to him there who normally aren't with a TT with some hills

He could well go for the RR and TT double, if he wants to. I don't think he'll manage to win either of them, but Martin doesn't look to great ATM, and although long way to go, his chances are increasing every day.

Does anybody know if Tom D has lost a bit of weight, maybe keeping close that he wanted to try out himself without too much pressure, or is he just in great shape up against a not so great and tired field at the moment? Im actually hoping the first, I have said for 2 years now that I would like to see him at least try to make the transition (doesnt have to be Wiggo-like, just at least try it out and see if he likes it), because his ITT his dynamite and the guy can climb with and has a slim body type. You never know when the Tour will throw a curveball 2012-route.

He's still the same weight. He has never been really overweight. He's the same weight and height as Chris Froome. He just looks more bulky... but really isn't

Wouldn't that be closer to Froome p/w ratio which means after losing 3 kilos he would be having greater p/w than Froome. A potential Wiggins in Making

I'm sorry, but that's just not true. Whatever source you have this from is wrong.
Froome is at least a few KG's lighter than Dumoulin.

Same as Froome? Definitely not, Froome isn't close to 70 kgs in top shape.

Dumoulin is in no danger of winning a GT, he's going to be a force in the Ardennes and TTs for a long time to come though. As Ryo said, why drop the weight and get worse at your strengths?

Meh, if he could lose fat only, then I imagine it could only help, but thats hard to do.

However, he already is a decent climber without shedding weight. I imagine good enough toe win MTF's from breakaways.

I hope he stays focussed on time trials mainly. A bit of climbing training won't hurt in one-week races, but he is already pretty close to winning TT-favored one week races already

Dumoulin should take back the red jersey today. Flat final 15 kms he should be able to take 10 secs. Doubt Orica will have many guys left to chase him back.

Lol what?

You can't just ride away from the peloton in 15 k of flat just because you are a superior tt'er. Besides, Orica likely won't be the only team chasing.

if a break is ahead why would any other team chase him?

Dumoulin really isn't going to ride off on the flat just like that. Not only Orica would care....
