Teams & Riders Tom Dumoulin discussion thread

I know that 35 is the new 25, but in all seriousness, if Dumoulin wants to win Le Tour, he can't wait forever and the perfect course for him. I would argue that he was stronger than Froome in '17. Why hide? He should go for it...and he sure can slay the praying mantis.

The only thing which has managed to beat Froome in the TDF in the last couple of years is Nibali's malocchio, but Dumoulin survived poopgate so he beat Nibali's malocchio. Therefore it is a logical necessity that Froome < malocchio < Dumoulin and Tom will win the TDF if he participates.

Dumoulin's malocchio is garbage though. Singles out 2 riders out of 160ish he hopes to not make the podium, and they both make the podium.

I think he will go. Sunweb have proven now they are also a strong TTT squad (with the youngest team ever to win worlds TTT), there is an ITT, and a cobbled stage as well. It's good for an allround rider. Maybe not as many ITT as he wants, but sufficient and with the right timing, AFTER the mt stages not before. So instead of having to defend a lead all the time he can now take it on the final day if he's close enough to Froome.

The ITT is when everyone is tired, and it might be by the time he's fading.

now wait a minute guys. is TdF already confirmed "go" for him?

According to the article that prompted this discussion, he is basing his participation on the official announcement of the route and whether or not it favors him.
that was my impression too.
the guys in TdF route thread already seeing him shredding the rivals to bits though :D
thought i've missed something.

I hope not, the Giro looks wideopen currently based on assumed participants, if he goes he becomes the prohibitive favourite.

Only if amount of TT-ing is similar to this year. If not, he's not the outright favorite then.

What if he never has to stop for a poop during a stage? Is he back to being a favourite then?

The question was about ITT. When we assume the poop incident never happened and there is no ITT, he doesn't win. If there is one stage 21 ITT, a win is dubious. He basically needs a rolling stage 10.

(And frankly, riders that have incidents like that tend to have them .. *again and again*. Aru will always fade, Valverde will never deal with the altitude.)

Yeah, people forget quickly. Poop incident +2min, and he gave a free minute to Pinot and Zakarin as well. Not that that mattered, but well.. Without incident he'd have 2/2.30 minutes going into the final TT...
...which is why his performance was far more impressive than Froome's TdF.

So why not go for Le Tour and win it. And cement his legacy. Beat the champ to be the champ, for Bjarne's sake. To me it's a no-brainer. The "course doesn't suit me" is BS if you're for real. Go Tom, and kick some...

Counterpoint: Tom is young and Froome is aging. There's no great threat to Froome aside from Tom. If the route isn't ideal wait until 2019. Froome would be older and more valvuable.

He also won't have the pressure to beat Froome immediately. It would be already a victory for everyone watching at home to see him fighting Froome to the very last metres of the race. Some different cup of tea compared to the fake pressure of Uran et al.

i'm a fan of nobody i 'm a fan of climbs , but come on Duomolin now is the best in gt fly down , he won a giro against a non in form quintana and nibali who was better at la vuelta , dumulin is aware that winning a gt is stressfull and that will be difficult winning again , so fans fly down othewise you will fall very very bad

And why do you think Quintana wasn't in form? Cause he couldn't beat Dumoulin? He beat everyone else.
Was Nibali better at the Vuelta? I'm not sure.

I think that they were great, but Dumoulin was stellar. His climbs to Blockhaus and Oropa was very good. Only Pantani climbed the Oropa faster than Tom. His climbing level at the Stelvio stage was very good as well. So he was a beast in the TTs but also very good in the mountains. I'm not so sure that Froome will be better in the mountains at TDF 2018.

Tom was absolutely stellar in the first part of Giro, but when rough multi climbing started he was in deep trouble multiple times.
If he can improve on the endurance will be very hard to defeat in the future.
Certainly, on general ground, TdF would suit him a lot better than Giro (climbing wise), if it has enough TT that is.

No, he isn't. Without significant amount of TT, he won't win a GT again.
