Tom 'Pidders' Pidcock

Pidcock is a strange little fella.
From the outside it seemed like Pidcocks off road focus was a big issue for the Ineos management, and when Pidcock left for Q36.5 I thought it made sense as he could do all his off road stuff and then ride the "fun" classics with Q36.5, but today he announced that he wont do any cyclocross this season...

I think Ineos' problem was the MTB season.

I've never been a big Pidcock fan but appreciated his considerable talents. Maybe I just hated anything to do with Ineos/Sky. Not racing CX and getting to know his teammates is a good decision he made. He maybe is not as selfish as previously thought. I hope he has a great season on the road.

My guess is that Pidcock's motivation to show INEOS that INEOS underappreciated him will lead Pidcock to have his best road season. I expect he will be bag a Monument, take an additional podium or two, and win a couple of stages in lower-tier GC races. I'm picturing a year similar in shape to his fine 2023 but with a few more wins.

Monumnet?
Which one would that be? A classics, yes.

Bring it on. We'll see if his new team could really give him a better support than what Ineos has given him.

they might not be able to, and he could still ride better for them, because he's happier there. alot of the talk of his performance in the tour/post Olympics etc etc was all about how his mind was being frazzled by Ineos, part of that caused by the uncertainty of his future there, but clearly also energy being wasted focussed on the whys/wherefores of what Ineos wanted from him on the road.

I thought I read today two of the people who worked with him have also now left Ineos.

Im not surprised he's not doing cross this year as his prep wouldnt have been any good and its a hiding to nothing if he wrecks hitting the ground running with Q36.5

One thing I'm finding really confusing about this whole thing is... wasn't part of the conflict with Ineos that he wanted to also have room in his schedule for CX and MTB?
So, now he's switching teams and is... only doing road racing.

My assumption is he will ride some mountainbike races, otherwise July will be a big empty gap in his calendar
With MVDP indicating the the mountainbike worlds look likely I'm sure Pidcock will find the opportunity to clash swords irresistible.

I see the same, and new team will find itself either outside or begging for invites.. Probably already a deal in place for Tudor..doubt that top tier riders would have switched otherwise.. And with Olympics way,way out Pidcock peaks would be pretty specific for MTB worlds..
I sure hope Tom talked with Peter Sagan about what happens when you take talent depth in mountain bike bunch for granted!! Lots of talented people!! Pidcock is setting himself up with this team to be Jack of all trades, master of none. And if Tom doesn't make early selections in big races Team Q doesn't have lots of horsepower on paper to chase down anything or race from the front..

theres a wide range to road racing though, I think he prefers (and is much better at) the 1 day classics, PnR,LBL,Amstel,Strade etc etc, which Ineos have never really taken that seriously, I mean in so far as they turn up, take part, but theyve never felt like its a thing they target as their main road goals, theyre stepping stones to the TdF.

I mean the whole kerfulle around Lombardia shows that is their intent, pick a rider who you maybe have fallen out with, but who has the best chance of winning, or bench him for "reasons" and just be participants and ride around like its a post season training jolly instead. Most teams are interested in the winning part ? non ? well not Ineos because its not a GT it seems.

and I think Ineos instead wanted him just as a GT rider, and not necessarily even a GC contender, just someone to ride in GTs for them, maybe have scope to go for the occasional stage win, though ever since he won that Alpe stage it feels like theyve literally not allowed him to go for stages anymore, his job became one to drag a Bernal or a Rodriguez around France for 3 weeks, which I dont think he enjoys, and the conditioning required to be better at that role ultimately wrecks his MTB/Cross aspirations , as we've always higlighted with Wout or Matthieu.

But aspirations which Ineos sponsors were more than happy with btw as can be seen with his continued off road relationship with Pinarello, it was just the Ineos think tank running the cycling team who apparently didnt think having their rider win a gold medal at the olympics was a priority to the Tour.

so I think he wants to do road, but not the road programme Ineos wanted from him, but which I think Q36.5 will give him, or at least must have promised, target the 1day races, and they ride as a team to support him, if they get a GT invite great, but it will be about the odd stage wins, not overall GC.

in some ways its alot like Cavs relationship with Sky, he went there as world champion expecting to be setup for more sprint wins but ended up being deprioritised for their GC chances, fair enough they were contending for winning which was their purpose, but they had the worlds best sprinter and just used him as a bottle carrier. and I think we forget that whole Champs win in 2012 with Brad leading him out wasnt the Sky plan for that last stage, that was Brad realising he needed and wanted to do something for his mate because he could see even if Brailsford couldnt, that was the right thing to do..

and again ultimately Cavs ambitions didnt match Skys and they negotiated an exit,, and the rest is history as they say.

So without cyclocross, what is he doing nowadays?
If he is like the rest of us trying to figure out who is buying enough Q36.5 clothing and other stuff to pay the bills!! Rapha struggling to turn a profit and now Pidcock signs with a team that can't last more than a couple of seasons with title sponsor!! Hope they have a plan for exposure of a very popular racer!! Sort of crazy that cycling clothing sponsor has recent videos of Tom Terrific wearing Ineos old rags while showcasing awesome light aero new Scott steed!! Assos will give Pidcock loaner kits if he needs stuff!!!

He is riding the Alula Tour and has to be one of the favorites for the win.
Pidcock has some pretty punchy capabilities, always solid, I don't see team Q having the depth to support him much. Because of length and lack of extensive climbing Pidcock has chance to ride from the front, but as far as Q36 having people to chase stronger teams, no in my opinion.. Tom Terrific is a wheel to suck unto and let him drag you until he can't. I personally find his team choice a complete puzzle.. TDF looks really remote and Giro or Vuelta has Tom chasing stages for the entire next year.. Pidcock podium in anything big is always possible I guess..
